On a train from Edinburgh to London. 3 incidences of this in our carriage
why would this not occur to you?!
tell Your kids to turn it the fuxk down/ off or buy some headphones

Where I am it's mostly adults not using them

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 23/08/2025 18:11

I absolutely hate this. We were on the Eurostar a while back with a family who decided to play a noisy board game (shouting, yelling, rattling the fucking dice, fighting) and then the parents cheerfully set the kids up playing a game on a shared iPad with no headphones and the volume cranked way up. DH, who is nicer and more tolerant than me, handed me his noise cancelling headphones for the duration. We were all far too polite to say anything, unlike Family Twat who had no manners whatsoever.

BeMellowAquaSquid · 23/08/2025 18:13

This all the time. Plus adults speaking on loudspeaker. No need.

Ddakji · 23/08/2025 18:13

I hate it but…

it’s not just mothers who allow their kids to do it.

It’s an anti-social behaviour that crosses all demographics - young, old, black, white, rich, poor, male, female.

It is the perfect demonstration of how stupid people are - that just because they can do something they should.

It’s how we end up with a nanny state.

EmpressaurusKitty · 23/08/2025 18:14

What I’d really like would be if portable electrical devices only played sound if people were wearing headphones. I know that’s extreme but it would be a lot less annoying on public transport.

We were on holiday recently, having an evening meal in restaurant, and an adult couple had a whole conversation with a family member. On loud speaker. They just put phone down on table and carried on eating and chatting. Everyone else was just looking at everyone else. Even the waiters didn't seem to know what to do.
On plane on way home, woman next to me facetimed her boyfriend, did have headphones on but still loud and weird seeing him eating lunch in car. Hard not to see. Family behind video called family members whilst waiting for take off (was a delay) on loud speaker so they could both talk.

What about fathers who do this, is that acceptable?

IThinkPink · 23/08/2025 18:15

Pesky ‘mothers’

TheGreatWesternShrew · 23/08/2025 18:17

This is my number 1 peeve. On flights too - nobody wants to listen to children’s shows or pinging games for hours!

It was mothers on my train as I described in the post.

On ba they make an announcement not to do it.

They really shouldn't need to.

Encrochat · 23/08/2025 18:19

Oh agree re facetimers
on our holiday it was grandparents on speaker with some bored toddler being made to talk to grandma/dad

Can’t STAND it when mothers do this!

It’s ok when fathers do it mind. I sit there thinking “He’s had a day out with his kids - he’s a great dad”

BetFreda · 23/08/2025 18:20

Use your voice, people!
Just ask them to turn it down/off. If on a plane, get the cabin crew to do it.

IcyRedCat · 23/08/2025 18:22

I agree, but groups of adults, teens, young adults, and kids often chat, laugh, and speak loudly. What’s the difference? No one would tell a group of adults to be quiet, right?

ImGoingUpstairsToTakeOffMyHat · 23/08/2025 18:23

On a serious note it is annoying but I don’t expect quiet behaviour on trains anymore, unless it’s in the quiet carriage.

Invest in headphones for yourself and find a good podcast, says I!

I expect they would if they were mothers

The OP has very clearly pointed out that on this occasion it was mothers. I knew as soon as I saw the title that the thread would rapidly become full of people harping on about how it isn’t just mothers. Everyone knows that it isn’t just mothers in general…but on this occasion, it seems it was.

Yes we must hate all other mothers. They are the enemy and must be approached with caution. Or vitriol.

Encrochat · 23/08/2025 18:24

Plot twist. One of the mothers was also an aunt so they're shit too. Shock😆

Meh. I enjoy throwing a sarky comment in now and again.

OP could have just said “people”. It I do actually suspect that with people who refer to women rather than people, there’s some Freudian thing going on where they just get far more annoyed at women doing something than when men do it.

Same in this case. Recently, on a plane, a group of teens was sitting behind, chatting, laughing, etc. There was nothing wrong with it, but yes, it was annoying if what you wanted was peace. However, you can’t tell them to be silent. People are allowed to live their lives around you. I don’t think the cabin crew could do much about it, can they?

Encrochat · 23/08/2025 18:26

if it were a man, I'd run up to him push his head back and give him loads of snogging with tongues

OP posts:
savethatkitty · 23/08/2025 18:28

Maybe have parents who do the same thing.
