On a recent trip to Tokyo, I noted phones on silent was a policy on trains.

There's an article in The Guardian today about new signs on the Elizabeth Line targeting headphone dodgers. I can't post a link as it signs me back in in the link if I sign out before posting

I was on the Elizabeth line today and it did occur to me that it’s one of the few lines that has 5 or 4G the whole way underground, which is great in some ways but means more opportunities for annoyance from headphone dodgers! (Great phrase, btw!)

I would love it to be more like Japan! Just shut up! No one else needs to know your life or your work (including the HR woman a friend once sat opposite on the train discussing what sounded like pretty confidential stuff in a nice, clear voice) or your music or your social media feed or anyfuckingthing else!!!

On a serious note it is annoying but I don’t expect quiet behaviour on trains anymore, unless it’s in the quiet carriage.

Invest in headphones for yourself and find a good podcast, says I!

This is exactly the attitude that is the problem

My answer to people like the HR woman is to lean over & say ‘I think the Jane you’re talking about is my cousin, can you tell me your name so I can let her know?’

The problem is that people don’t expect trains to be quiet and advise using headphones?! Confused

No, the problem is that those creating the noise and disturbing other passengers aren’t the ones expected to change their behaviour.

Bit like women expected to change their behaviour in the face of bad behaviour from men.

If you’re the one disturbing others, you change.

FunnyOrca · 27/08/2025 17:33

OP, was it the LNER?

We had a nightmare journey sitting behind a table of 4 children with 3 pairs of headphones… we couldn’t tell who on the train was their parents and one of the children could have been old enough to be supervising the others, so we just weren’t sure.

We spoke to the ticket inspector but he said he would only speak to an adult about it, which I guess is fair as we felt the same.

The child without headphones watched a children’s cartoon with an annoying theme song every 20 minutes, squeaky American voices and regular musical numbers for the whole 4.5 hours. All of which, I think is quite different to actual children talking or playing.

About 30 minutes before we arrived, a parent stopped by to check on the group on their way to the toilet. It turned out the two adults were sitting further down the carriage. My husband politely asked if the parents might have another set of headphones for the fourth child.

The parent went off on one like a rabid dog. They were clearly prepared for the argument and hurled abuse at my husband, who obviously regretted saying anything.

I wish LNER would make announcements to let people know it’s unacceptable. They could also sell headphones in the cafe bar and cash in on making the journey more pleasant.

FunnyOrca · 27/08/2025 17:34

Also, I would never do it, but I actually prefer people using loudspeaker for calls in public. If I have to listen to one half of the conversation, I might as well be able to properly eavesdrop!

OonaStubbs · 27/08/2025 17:55

The train companies need to hire more guards that can enforce the rules regarding phone usage and noise.

I don’t think popping headphones on asking anyone to change behaviour. It’s just making life easier. I think that unless you’re in the quiet carriage it’s reasonable to expect noise and if you are sensitive to noise, using headphones is a good idea.

Very very weird you’re comparing this to men’s presumably violent behaviour.

Are you feeling well?

TBH I’d rather train tickets remained cheap and guards dealt with serious behaviour

Are there actually rules around phone use?? I always assumed using phones on trains was allowed

OonaStubbs · 27/08/2025 18:34

Train tickets aren't cheap. People should not have to put up with unnecessary noise on trains.

DdraigGoch · 27/08/2025 18:39

P0rnstarmartini · 23/08/2025 18:32

If it bothers you that much get some earplugs 😅 some kinds just won’t wear headphones

Tough. If they won't wear headphones then the device should be muted. You don't inflict Paw Patrol from tinny speakers on everyone else. It's not on other people to block out your sound, it's your responsibility to be considerate.

DdraigGoch · 27/08/2025 18:52

OonaStubbs · 23/08/2025 19:36

This should be banned. Have warnings but anyone who persists is banned from all public transportation for life.

Under the railway byelaws it is banned.

7. Music, sound, advertising and carrying on a trade
except with written permission from an operator no person on the railway shall, to the annoyance of any person, sing or use any instrument, article or equipment for the production or reproduction of sound

They’re cheaper than if more guards were on trains policing phone usage

dynamiccactus · 27/08/2025 19:14

Not RTFT but agree it's more usually adults not using them.

But if you say anything on here about children not wearing headphones you just get told they must have SN. Personally I think it's much more likely to be a lack of consideration for others than it is SN.

On a plane I think the cabin crew can say something. The pilot's word is law so if they tell you to shut it and you don't, and (s)he then tells you to shut it and you don't, you can get arrested on landing. So they absolutely should tell people to wear headphones and not be inconsiderate wotsits.

If I were planning a rail service now I'd have a loud carriage instead of a quiet carriage. Everyone who wanted to be noisy could go to the loud carriage and the rest of us could have peace and quiet.

In my dreams...

Why can’t the people using their phones with the volume on pop headphones on, then? If it’s so easy? I mean, I agree, so why don’t they do it? Because they’re terminally selfish and inconsiderate with a hefty dollop of stupid thrown in, I can only assume.

Yes they should. I never said they shouldn’t?

I was talking about noise in general. Hence my original post saying I don’t expect anything but noise on trains now. Trains are generally noisy in some way, people can’t expect total silence in normal carriages.

You seem to have really wound yourself up over this.

I wonder how many people pay nothing. I spent nine hours on six trains yesterday, return journey with two changes each way. My ticket was checked once, often isn't checked at all. I'm not sure of penalty if you haven't got a ticket but I wonder if people make a calculation and think if I get away without saying £90 it is worth taking the chance. Sometimes the guard just sells them a ticket.

That's without the number of times when I've seen someone unable to show their Railcard with their reduced price ticket and the guard just reminding them to bring it next time.

Makes it more expensive for those of us who pay.
