If people genuinely don’t think earphones are needed, I shall play my latest audiobook out loud to compete with Peppa Pig, the Arsenal v Leeds commentary on some chaps phone and some random hip hop from the teenagers further up the carriage. Sounds like the perfect travelling conditions for everyone.

And then you have adults that were ‘parented’ not being able to hold down a job because of the trauma their parents instilled in them.

Oh get a grip.

Needlenardlenoo · 23/08/2025 19:21

Headphones designed for kids have volume limiters - I'm sure we had some.

Nope, still way too loud. Ongoing use of headphones in kids can cause long term hearing losses. So your so called judgement on parents (like the OP) is not so well
informed.

I was on a flight last week … parents put the iPad on full volume for toddler. 5 renditions of “baby shark” later intervened and asked them to please turn the volume down. Horrified looks (flight from Mumbai to London, Indians tend to be very - life revolves around children) but they did turn it down. And yes I’ve flown many many times with 2 young kids (alone) so I do get it.

Ponderingwindow · 23/08/2025 19:27

This has become enough of a problem across ages that I think it requires legislative intervention.

I know there will inevitably posts about how headphones are uncomfortable and not tolerated.

my ASD child resisted headphones, but we persisted through many pairs until we found some she found comfortable. It was an expensive and time consuming process, but it was absolutely necessary. Tablets and phones can be hugely useful, especially for young children with SN, but we still exist as part of society.

The point is to use the tools to teach our children to be out in the world and get them to the point they hopefully don’t need the safety net anymore. it worked in our case. I have an older teen doing well in school with a part-time job who picked me
up a coffee on her drive home yesterday.

Not every child is the same, but as an ASD individual myself, I do still think there are a set of headphones out there for everyone. It’s just trial and error to find the right match, or even building them ourselves, like with so many other things we need.

HelloHellNo · 23/08/2025 19:27

My kids behave better than most adults on public transport. Where i live adults don't use headphones on public transport. They talk with the phone on loudspeaker so you can hear both sides of the conversation. The conversations are usually totally inappropriate. They put their feet on the chairs. I've even had to ask people not to vape on the train.

TY78910 · 23/08/2025 19:30

Ddakji · 23/08/2025 19:20

Don’t be silly. A child learning how to behave in public transport isn’t traumatised.

I wasn’t allowed to behave like that and I’m not traumatised and have been working solidly for over 30 years.

Just own that you can’t be bothered to actively parent and would rather turn your kids into screen addicts before they’re 5.

My comment is as extreme as you implying a bit of iPad means you’re not parenting your child.

@Ddakji So are you mother of the year then? You don’t watch TV do you?! You seem to like Squid games it seems!!

OonaStubbs · 23/08/2025 19:36

This should be banned. Have warnings but anyone who persists is banned from all public transportation for life.

JaneEyre40 · 23/08/2025 19:36

Plot twist. One of the mothers was also an aunt so they're shit too. Shock😆

Brilliant.

How old were the kids. I couldn’t force a 3-4 yo to wear headphones for example. So it’s either a bit of Peppa, or you’ve got a kid opening and closing the seat table behind you Or standing on the seat trying to look through the gap in between the two 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Why not? And why are they the only options? I have young DC, they either wear headphones in public or they don’t watch. I take colouring, books, travel activities and games as alternatives and have always managed fine.

Encrochat · 23/08/2025 19:42

You go @Overthebow
iPads aren't obligatory

Why are you making stuff up?

Like @TY78910 you now seem to be reduced to making stuff up.
Why?

but you are implying that parents who use a bit of iPads are bad parents. You said this:
“Just own that you can’t be bothered to actively parent and would rather turn your kids into screen addicts before they’re 5.”

what makes you parent of the year?!!!

Encrochat · 23/08/2025 19:48

I'm parent of the year
None of mine used iPads, largely because they weren't invented

I said that in response to a poster who wants to impose her volume onto the rest of the carriage because apparently a) she can’t put headphones on her children and b) there’s no other way to keep a child occupied for a 2 hour train journey.

Why are you making stuff up?

Dancinginthemoonlightbulb · 23/08/2025 19:51

Personally find loud phone conversations worse 🤷‍♀️ generally adults doing that. Once when I was sat opposite a couple on one of those 4 seater tables they cracked out a flaky pastry pie and it went everywhere. That was also annoying. However, it’s public transport so best thing to do is put your own earphones in and try and be zen.
