I’d settle for a rule that says all noisy devices will be thrown out of the nearest openable window or door.

Either or, would satiate me 😀

How old were the kids. I couldn’t force a 3-4 yo to wear headphones for example. So it’s either a bit of Peppa, or you’ve got a kid opening and closing the seat table behind you Or standing on the seat trying to look through the gap in between the two 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

You can get headphones for toddlers.
Not old enough for headphones = not old enough for device

As @Crunchingleafsays, the noise from a device is unbearable in a way actual voices aren’t. It’s tinny and poor quality.
I have no research or knowledge about this but I suspect the brain knows which sounds are “natural” and which ones aren’t which explains why a lot of people cannot stand third party Peppa Pig.

NB I am a huge Peppa Pig fan. Been there since the beginning 🐷

Interesting, I find a group of teens making loud jokes more annoying than the sounds from Peppa Pig. However, I obviously tolerate both while travelling.

Oh I am aware that they exist. I’ve had several pairs. Keeping them on is another thing. I am totally happy to not give my kid an iPad on the train. But then the passengers should be totally happy with the noise coming out of the kids mouth as opposed to the device.

Pickledchilli · 23/08/2025 19:01

Because if they were young kids they often put the volume on max on their headphones which can burst their eardrums.

Wherehas2023gone · 23/08/2025 19:01

We flew with Flysafair last week (a low cost South Africa airline). I was incredibly impressed with their announcement that you were not to play sound on electronic devices unless you had headphones to listen through. (Also seat selection was about £3 and an extra 20kg bag £9….)

Could have said parents but nope blame mothers yet again

But men matter too right?

Why of course they do, else there would be no mothers 😂

If all of us who hate people doing this (and I do believe we’re in the majority) asked people to stop, we could change the way people behave. But it takes people giving a shit and not putting up with crappy behaviour in public. I always call people out on it. Perhaps as MN users collectively we could agree to do that?

My 3yo knows that she doesn’t get to use an iPad on a train if she doesn’t wear headphones.

Those aren't the only two options though, are they? The child could something on the tablet that doesn't require sound, or the parent could read a book with them.

Oh come on! Let’s say you’re on a 2h journey. Their attention span is like 10 mins max. My 5yo is very well behaved and self sufficient but even she would have her limits.

So they wear headphones for the parts where they watch a programme. Or else they don't get to watch it and have to do something else.

Crappy behaviour? Hate? Yes, annoying behaviour can be frustrating, but there are far worse issues in the world; this isn't one of the most significant problems to worry about.

I really would love to live in a world where my outlook on life is so black and white.

On a serious note it is annoying but I don’t expect quiet behaviour on trains anymore, unless it’s in the quiet carriage.

Invest in headphones for yourself and find a good podcast, says I!

Edited

I can’t use headphones. So I don’t listen to audio on my phone till I get home.

What do you think parents did before there were iPads?

You parent them. Books, colouring in, talking to them even! and yes of course you make them wear headphones if they’re listening to audio.

How do you think people parents managed in the past?

Kids in the past went wild, running up and down carriages. There is only so much sitting a young child can handle.

Again, only if they’re not parented. You plan and prep for a long journey and you make expectations of behaviour clear.

Thank you! Sick of that comment 🤣 The world is not silent, if you have an issue with sound then get yourself some earplugs. This isn’t North Korea.

And then you have adults that were ‘parented’ not being able to hold down a job because of the trauma their parents instilled in them.

Or you don’t take them on a plane…😀

A 3 year old plus can wear headphones, especially if they want to hear the sound and that’s the only way!

Don’t be silly. A child learning how to behave in public transport isn’t traumatised.

I wasn’t allowed to behave like that and I’m not traumatised and have been working solidly for over 30 years.

Just own that you can’t be bothered to actively parent and would rather turn your kids into screen addicts before they’re 5.
