On a train from Edinburgh to London. 3 incidences of this in our carriage
why would this not occur to you?!
tell Your kids to turn it the fuxk down/ off or buy some headphones

if it were a man, I'd run up to him push his head back and give him loads of snogging with tongues

Um… why? To embarrass him in front of whoever he was FaceTiming?

BetFreda · 23/08/2025 18:30

@IcyRedCati was referring to people using devices with no headphones. I don’t have an issue with people talking, annoying as they are sometimes. I will speak to cabin crew if someone’s kid is playing Peppa Pig to the entire plane.

Yes we must hate all other mothers. They are the enemy and must be approached with caution. Or vitriol.

Woah, mean!
Is it cos I is a mother?

If it bothers you that much get some earplugs 😅 some kinds just won’t wear headphones

JacquesHarlow · 23/08/2025 18:33

Can people STOP focusing on the “mothers” in the OP and stop using it for a king sized example of whatabouttery?

Can we instead talk about the headphones issue?

We all really know what is going on. Britain (and other parts of the world, but the OP refers to Britain so I’ll keep it here) is becoming more atomised.

Many folk are driving around in huge unnecessary cars they don’t need. They’re obsessed with “privacy” and want to exist in their own bubbles. Many don’t care about others but just react with total aggression when confronted by someone who expects better societal standards.

Thatcher said “there’s no such thing and society” and goodness haven’t we arrived there. We are now in a place where some folk would rather get what they want than worry about another person, because they know that if challenged, they can just shout them down.

What about fathers who do this, is that acceptable?

Yeah, that's fine🙄

Some of us who are adults struggle with ear plugs. And why should we? It's not unreasonable to expect a child to either wear headphones or have it on a low volume

Then those kids shouldn’t have iPad or video content then, @P0rnstarmartini .

if they’re ND they can and will wear headphones. Ask me how I know.

The OP has very clearly pointed out that on this occasion it was mothers. I knew as soon as I saw the title that the thread would rapidly become full of people harping on about how it isn’t just mothers. Everyone knows that it isn’t just mothers in general…but on this occasion, it seems it was.

Wait, what? You don't know how the land lies on mn 😂

I understand your point, but what is the difference? If a child listens to Peppa Pig without headphones, how is that worse than a group of young adults laughing and chatting loudly?

Crunchingleaf · 23/08/2025 18:41

The sound that comes out of the average phone/ipad just makes it unpleasant to listen to at high volumes.

Recently on a facebook group I am another a mother was asking if it’s okay if her child uses a phone to watch tv on a plane without headphones. Nearly everyone said yes. How do people not get that public spaces become unbearable when everyone is acting like a selfish a hole. Just be considerate of others when in public. It makes public places nicer to be in.

BlusteryLake · 23/08/2025 18:45

Anyone using any device without headphones in a public place is supremely anti social. I really hope it's made illegal soon.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 23/08/2025 18:45

EmpressaurusKitty · 23/08/2025 18:14

What I’d really like would be if portable electrical devices only played sound if people were wearing headphones. I know that’s extreme but it would be a lot less annoying on public transport.

Oh, I thought you were going to say portable electric.........cattle prod, cos I think that'd work 😂

amylou8 · 23/08/2025 18:47

I REALLY hate this.
I suspect DP may be an offender as he's slipped up a couple of times, and quickly silenced it, when we're out together.
I may have to LTB.

BetFreda · 23/08/2025 18:47

As @Crunchingleafsays, the noise from a device is unbearable in a way actual voices aren’t. It’s tinny and poor quality.
I have no research or knowledge about this but I suspect the brain knows which sounds are “natural” and which ones aren’t which explains why a lot of people cannot stand third party Peppa Pig.

NB I am a huge Peppa Pig fan. Been there since the beginning 🐷

There’s always one on these threads. 🙄

You are familiar with the concept of parenting, presumably? As in, the adult telling the child what they can and can’t do?

TheaBrandt1 · 23/08/2025 18:52

We watched White Lotus and one character referred to being trapped with “a family of twats”. Anyone that lets their kid use a device in an enclosed space without headphones immediately relegates themselves to being a family of twats.

Catsandcannedbeans · 23/08/2025 18:53

If it’s the LNER then next time book the quiet carriage and you can sternly draw their attention to the sign that says to use headphones and leave the carriage to take calls

TY78910 · 23/08/2025 18:55

How old were the kids. I couldn’t force a 3-4 yo to wear headphones for example. So it’s either a bit of Peppa, or you’ve got a kid opening and closing the seat table behind you Or standing on the seat trying to look through the gap in between the two 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

EmpressaurusKitty · 23/08/2025 18:55

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 23/08/2025 18:45

Oh, I thought you were going to say portable electric.........cattle prod, cos I think that'd work 😂

I’d settle for a rule that says all noisy devices will be thrown out of the nearest openable window or door.

Theunamedcat · 23/08/2025 18:56

ImGoingUpstairsToTakeOffMyHat · 23/08/2025 18:25

Meh. I enjoy throwing a sarky comment in now and again.

OP could have just said “people”. It I do actually suspect that with people who refer to women rather than people, there’s some Freudian thing going on where they just get far more annoyed at women doing something than when men do it.

Could have said parents but nope blame mothers yet again

But men matter too right?

TheMagnificentBean · 23/08/2025 18:57

The only thing that is possibly worse is the people who obviously judge you for “parenting with screens” on long and boring journeys.

So I make sure DC and I manage at least 20 minutes or so of excruciating eye spy or answering endless BUT WHYYYYY questions (often related to the journey and their morbid interest in potential exciting accidents eg but how SAFE are trains? What would ACTUALLY HAPPEN if it smashed all up? What if we all got stuck in a tunnel?) or helping them read some mind-numbing book painfully slowly so the other passengers (like me) wish for the sweet release of tablet+headphones.

But it isn’t just mothers, or just children who listen to devices without headphones. It seems increasingly widespread.
