How long is acceptable to wait in the salon for your appointment?

ThatCyanSheep · 16/08/2025 10:51

Just that really. Currently at the salon and my stylist is running at least half an hour behind, I’ve been waiting for 25 minutes as it stands. She knows I’m here and told me to take a seat, but I’m just wondering how long you’d wait before saying something?!

I will never understand the tipping culture. What makes you decide which people you tip and which you don’t. Why do you find it acceptable to tip your hairdresser but not the person serving you on the tills in Tesco?

If a service is advertised at a certain price that’s what you should pay. Being pressured or shamed into paying even more on top is not ok.

Well, quite.

At Christmas I give my nail lady and hairdresser a card and some homemade baked goods, which I always thought was nice enough. Where does it end with tipping? We have the same Sainsbury’s delivery driver each week, am I meant to tip him? Do I tip the bin men? When we go out for a meal we round it up and leave that as a tip but that’s about it!

I ALWAYS tip. Always have. In UK.

Same ! Always tip in restaurants too, unless service is appalling.
£2-3 for take away delivery drivers too.
This debate has been done to death here on Mumsnet lol , do you/don’t you tip 🤦🏻‍♀️

And yet still probably thinks you’re tight for not tipping so maybe she’s just not busy or popular enough to be bothered.

You’re lucky, a salon here would always be “very busy” when you tried to book back in if you hadn’t tipped, and you’d be the gossip of the salon the second the door closed behind you.

Gosh, I have never appreciated more that my hairdresser isn't a total bitch! I have a great relationship with her but think tipping a manager charging £100 for a cut would be absolutely taking the piss. The idea that I'd be the gossip of the salon for not tipping someone on more money than me is wild.

Nearly an hour behind and I’m in the chair! I’ve never once been asked to tip

Op no one asks for a tip. Come on you know this!

LittleCarrot12 · 16/08/2025 11:53

Last time I was at the hairdresser my app was 1230. She texted and said could I come earlier as previous client finished quiet. I got there at 1145. Her next appointment arrived on time at 3pm. She had just washed my hair, and didn’t finish me till 330.
she was lucky I went early or next client would have been left over an hour!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/08/2025 11:53

My hairdresser is the salon owner - he’d get someone to ring me, or he’d message me on WA if he was running significantly late. I think 10/15 minutes is okay if a little annoying.

I also don’t tip. I now actually don’t pay at all because I look after the salon’s social media for them, but previously I gifted him eg champagne when lockdown ended, vodka (his drink of choice) at Christmas, bought a present when his wife had a baby and so on. I’ve been going there a long time and we’re friends now so tipping would be weird, especially as he’s the most senior person there.

Delivery drivers?! Surely not! Am I just an arsehole??? I’d only ever tip a waiter/waitress

I’ve never seen a single person tip. The salon is card only, no option to tip on the card machine, and no tip jar on the desk!

I have never tipped a hairdresser, I pay £120 for cut and highlights. Not tipping on top of these prices and to be honest it would not occur to me even if the prices were lower.

Yeah im going to be paying well over £200 this time. My hairdresser is about to go on her fourth holiday in as many months so she can’t be doing too badly!

ChangingWeight · 16/08/2025 11:57

I’m in my 20s and have lived in cities/near London my entire life, and have never tipped in a hair salon. It’s not the done thing where I am. I pay my hair dresser via card, they don’t take cash nor do they have a till at the salon. They input the exact amount to be paid in the card machine. I genuinely don’t think I am committing some type of faux pas in my salon considering my hair dresser is one of my friends.

I’m waiting for the “they’re minimum wage workers”, so am I! I don’t see anyone tipping me after I send them an email or phone them!

I mean there’s no prompt on the card machine, nothing on the desk to suggest they expect tips.

10 mins. I was expected to sit and wait once unto 30 mins whilst I saw the hairdresser chat endlessly to the client before me. She had the cheek to say she lost track of time after I saw the junior remind her twice i was there.

Since then it has been a zero tolerance to any of this. I now have a very good salon which can manage time and are very punctual.

Dental hygienists earn significantly more than hairdressers!

Hair dressing is not the underpaid profession people think it is. I make approx £1000 a week after all of my expenses including chair fee as a blonde colour specialist in the NW. More over the festive period October-December.

No. I’m not. I’ve genuinely never seen people tip outside of a hospitality setting.

I’m not on the wind up. I genuinely don’t know why I’d be expected to tip a delivery driver? We don’t have things like uber eats or deliveroo where I live so delivery drivers are employed by the restaurant they’re working at - so they’re paid a wage

Not surprised they’re happy to let you wait if you never tip!

I agree with this. I’ve only. Went to a hairdresser half a dozen times in my adult life and even I know it’s accepted to tip your stylist and the person who washes your hair.

If you’re not on the wind up I’d be embarrassed if I was you.
