How long is acceptable to wait in the salon for your appointment?

Just that really. Currently at the salon and my stylist is running at least half an hour behind, I’ve been waiting for 25 minutes as it stands. She knows I’m here and told me to take a seat, but I’m just wondering how long you’d wait before saying something?!

I never tip. I go to stylists who are self- employed or own the salon. They don't have juniors washing or sweeping up hair. They tell me what they want and I pay it.

Dental hygienists earn significantly more than hairdressers!

I should hope my hairdresser earns good money when they’re charging £140 for a cut and colour!

Mine isn't quite that much but heading that way. No way am I'm tipping when they've just hiked the prices because she's a senior stylist!

Imagine being able to afford a £350 hairdo and MJ on a minimum wage job

I’m quite open about the fact I’m living at home, and paying minimal rent. Yes I do spend money on nice things for myself and things for my health, but I’m happy and that’s what matters in life isn’t it really?

Mine messages me if she’s running late or early - no drama if I can’t get there earlier but if she’s running late she lets me know so I can come a bit later - rarely happens though.

💯

I don’t know why you think this is a gotcha? I live at home, pay minimal rent and save for things like my hair and Mounjaro because it makes me feel better about myself. Seeing as 18 months ago I was near on suicidal because of my weight and how much I hated my appearance, I’m not going to apologise for that.

My daughter has a 3 month waiting list and is very popular with young glam women who all are happy to pay up to £250 a visit, she does loads of posts on instagram , and one client brought her in a matcha tea , she posted an instagram story very tongue in cheek , joking about being brought it, with a pic, and that that was the way to beat her list, and loads of her clients brought her one to their next appointment ! It was crazy , really funny ,but she really was joking .
my favourite clients actually never tip , and i still love them , i do everything i can to accommodate them , indeed today i took some m and s giant cookies in to give to my favourite client to have with her drink . We aren't all grabby …

It's not expected though.

a tip is very much up to the person paying for the service and should never be expected. Especially when often times it's an expensive service.

It is expected.

They can expect as much as they like, it doesn't mean they are going to get it. I sometimes tipped in the past but now the prices have gone up by around £20 I'll pay the price and that's it.

If you can't afford it, go somewhere cheaper

Even if I could find somewhere cheaper why should I? I'm paying for the services just not leaving a tip on top. As tipping isn't compulsory I'm doing nothing wrong.

Agree..Christ the a
prentices rely on tips half the time as their wage is so poor..remember back 8n the ‘80’s, we were always tipped.

But is that really the case nowadays with the minimum wage in place?

myblueskirt · 21/08/2025 01:05

I make the first appointment of the day so never wait at the start. I found a good salon (finally!). I like them because they quote the service at the start and don’t product push. They do a great job👏

Not in England… I’m Irish and we tip everyone. Well my family do at least!

I would feel so awkward not leaving a little something extra.

My grandparents even tip the staff on airlines as they’re getting off the plane.

Isn't accepting a tip a sackable offence for cabin crew?

TwinklyNight · 21/08/2025 01:10

I'd probably wait 10-15 minutes, never had to wait longer.
Why don't you tip?

SallyDraperGetInHere · 21/08/2025 01:13

What’s bizarre to me is the number of posters who believe a hair stylist might reasonably ignore a booked appointment to punish a paying customer for not tipping in the past. That’s not reasonable! Tipping is in the gift of the service user.

Itstwelveoclocksomewhere · 21/08/2025 01:20

legoplaybook · 16/08/2025 12:09

If they want a fiver why don't they increase their charges by a fiver?

If they are anything like mine, they will frequently increase their prices by a percentage. My hair now costs 200 pounds and the thought of tipping on top of that is ludicrous.

Before I had kids, I always tipped everyone - nail technicians, delivery drivers, taxis. In hindsight it was ridiculous as they earned more than me and were probably very aware of it. If they had any morals, they'd have refused my tips.

Nowadays I rarely get takeaways and I pay for everything else by card.

Oh I will, don't worry. It's not as though I'm haggling the price FFS! If I'm paying £100-£200 for a service then that's the price, not price plus another 10%!

I don't think that would happen but I do believe that tipping customers might get eg a free wash and blow dry on their wedding day and various sample kits. That customer is me. I also know they look leniently on me on the rare occasion I've had to cancel an appointment and do their best to squeeze me in .

Idontdobumsex · 21/08/2025 15:03

I’ve never met a hairdresser that isn’t living in the lap of luxury! They don’t need tips!
