How long is acceptable to wait in the salon for your appointment?

ThatCyanSheep · 16/08/2025 10:51

Just that really. Currently at the salon and my stylist is running at least half an hour behind, I’ve been waiting for 25 minutes as it stands. She knows I’m here and told me to take a seat, but I’m just wondering how long you’d wait before saying something?!

You dont need to tip op and you're not required to. I never do.
My sisters a waitress and she earns more than me (marketing manager) because she gets hundreds a week in tips, lives off that and her monthly wage goes into savings. They are not hard done by.

Henry8thHoover · 17/08/2025 07:14

Mine always runs late. I try to book the first appointment of the day and often she’s late for that too. She’s a great stylist so I put up with it.

I love my dental hygienist, wouldn’t dream if tipping her

Exactly this!

They don't have to ask, it is expected

It's not expected though.

a tip is very much up to the person paying for the service and should never be expected. Especially when often times it's an expensive service.

JayJayj · 17/08/2025 12:06

I have only ever tipped if it was a couple of pound to get as change. Otherwise I wouldn’t. It costs a lot as it is.

I grew up in the 60s and 70s. Hairdressing was known as the worst paying profession, so DM always tipped (10%), as do I. Mind you, my hairdresser is also a friend and only charges 'mates rates', so I am more than happy to tip.

I do think times have changed somewhat though. Back when I first started going to a salon (I was 11!) yes they did have apprentices but they were very much consigned to learning. These days the same stylist who does your hair washes your hair, takes your foils out, styles it etc.

I’ve never had the stylist wash my hair; the apprentices do that. I’ve never slipped them a fiver though! 🙈

I have a technician who colours my hair, a junior who takes foils out and washes my hair, and a stylist who cuts and blow dries my hair.
I can’t believe you have paid over £300 for a salon experience with one person!

She’s one of the more senior stylists. The way this salon works is the same person does everything - so they do the consultations, any services, washing, styling etc.

My salon has expert technicians and expert stylists.
A technician would cut hair, but reluctantly as it’s not her area of expertise.
A stylist would colour hair, but reluctantly as she doesn’t have the full training for ALL types of colour (foils, meche, balayage etc).

You get the right person for each job.

i can promise you that this salon, which has won awards, knows what they’re doing. She did my colour because she needed to match it to my extensions. She then washed it because she wanted to do a certain wash with treatments because I have some slight thinning on one side of my head due to be being on Mounjaro. She then dried my hair to fit my extensions. I don’t know why you think your salon is the way they all have to work?!

I bow to your broader experience. I’ve never had extensions and understand they are a bit of a nightmare to maintain and VERY expensive! xx

Have to say, I haven't been to a salon since 2009! The prices seem astromical! I only went then because I wanted the 'salon experience' for a change.

My mum would do it with a pair of kitchen scissors 🤣 I was a nightmare in primary school. Hated having my hair brushed or touched and I would only let her do it once a week. But when I got to secondary school I wanted to be cool and go to the salon 😂

Do they?? My hairdresser owns the salon and seems to be doing ok.

You’re right, in hairdressing you don’t tip the boss

Edenmum2 · 17/08/2025 14:52

ThatCyanSheep · 16/08/2025 11:35

I’ve never seen a single person tip. The salon is card only, no option to tip on the card machine, and no tip jar on the desk!

I just ask them to put an extra 10% on the card machine

notatinydancer · 17/08/2025 16:35

ThatCyanSheep · 16/08/2025 11:33

Nobody tips. We’re in England, not American!

People do tip. How do you know nobody tips ?
I always round it up at least to the nearest £10.

notatinydancer · 17/08/2025 16:44

ThatCyanSheep · 16/08/2025 12:02

Now THAT has to be a wind up! They tip people who are pretty well paid?!

Airline staff are not well paid at all.

Edenmum2 · 17/08/2025 14:52

See that would bring the cost of my cut to £82.50, which I think would be too much.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 17/08/2025 16:52

Mrsttcno1 · 16/08/2025 11:42

To add, the very few people who haven’t bothered to tip then wonder why they struggle getting an appointment at a busy time, slow message back etc… not surprising.

Actually I would just expect good, professional service, with or without tip. I don’t want to go somewhere I get treated sub par because I didn’t slip them a tenner after my already expensive cut and colour.

Yes, I really hope that if you don't tip, you don't get poor service.

For just a cut? Yes that’s very expensive and understandable. I have a cut and full head of highlights for £100 and it takes them 2.5 hours so 10% seems fair. I think I’ve just always tipped because my mum taught me to when I first started going and I’ve just never stopped.

Yes, mine only takes 30 mins. I think 2.5 hours is a lot more work.

HappyMamma2023 · 17/08/2025 17:15

My hairdresser was 25mins late for my 2yo's appt by which time he was very bored and had been barked at several times by the yappy dogs. No apology, no I'll be x minutes can you go for a walk and come back? I've been going for years and won't be going back again. It only takes one bad experience to lose a loyal customer
