How long is acceptable to wait in the salon for your appointment?

Just that really. Currently at the salon and my stylist is running at least half an hour behind, I’ve been waiting for 25 minutes as it stands. She knows I’m here and told me to take a seat, but I’m just wondering how long you’d wait before saying something?!

People do tip for some things in the UK. Maybe not everyone, but many people. Hairdressing and/or beauty would be one of those, depending on specifics.

bugalugs45 · 16/08/2025 11:36

Hairdresser won’t ask you to tip 🤦🏻‍♀️ but they will remember whether or not you do , rightly or wrongly , my hairdresser will often fit me in at short notice etc & it could be as I generously tip , plus I love the way she does my hair so follow her from salon to salon and have done for years!!

Nearly an hour behind and I’m in the chair! I’ve never once been asked to tip

🤷🏼‍♀️ of course they won’t ASK you to tip.
They’ll know though, which of their clients tip, and which don’t.

Typo

I’ve never seen a single person tip. The salon is card only, no option to tip on the card machine, and no tip jar on the desk!

I pay by card but give her cash directly in her hand

ThatCyanSheep · 16/08/2025 11:38

She’s explained now it was because of another stylist being off sick and a client needing an appointment before her holiday - otherwise I was blocked in for the whole day. Guess it’s not because I’m a mean bastard after all!

Exactly what I do.

TripTrapSnipSnap · 16/08/2025 11:39

She still should've let you know when you got in, or certainly after the first half hour.

Nobody tips. We’re in England, not American!

They definitely do, also in England, everybody tips at my salon.

Leapintothelightning · 16/08/2025 11:41

This thread is mad I didn’t realise so many people tipped their hairdressers!
Hairdressers earn more than me, I don’t get tipped for looking after other people’s children, so why should I tip my hairdresser?

She’d have prioritised you over her colleague’s client normally.

You don’t tip a stylist you love?

That may be why they don’t mind making you wait.

Why should you tip a stylist? Surely they’re being paid a proper wage? My stylist owns the salon and drives a brand new Audi TT. Why on Earth would I tip her? I don’t type my nail lady either? I’m sure she’s charging what she needs to make a living and if she’s relying on tips then she’s a poor business woman.

notacooldad · 16/08/2025 11:42

If you go to the salon I go to your in for the long haul!!!
Its like a little community as the hairdresser is related to everyone and family members pop in for a chat.
I found it weird at first and was going to go somewhere else but hairdresser did my hair great, she is lovely and I've grown fond of the chaos!!! I do plan my visits on days when I have a lot of free time though!
Not helpful to the op though

Mrsttcno1 · 16/08/2025 11:42

To add, the very few people who haven’t bothered to tip then wonder why they struggle getting an appointment at a busy time, slow message back etc… not surprising.

Nope - the other stylist is the owner of the salon so her clients got redistributed as needed. She was only due to do me today, so she’s prioritising me over others!

I never struggle for appointments nor do I get slow messages back - she’s answered me at midnight before!

That sounds more like bribery than tipping…

ETA my hairdresser always texts me back quickly, always manages to fit me in for appointments. She’s doing my hair on her day off so that it’s done for me going back to work. Because she is a lovely person. She’s never treated me worse because I don't tip her.

And yet still probably thinks you’re tight for not tipping so maybe she’s just not busy or popular enough to be bothered.

You’re lucky, a salon here would always be “very busy” when you tried to book back in if you hadn’t tipped, and you’d be the gossip of the salon the second the door closed behind you.

Salon owner here , we spend thousands on training each year , my operating costs are huge
I also pay £20 an hour
we do charge a lot because we need too

Tipping is always appreciated but not expected
my stay get around £100/200 extra in tips per week

stylists would not make you wait because of not tipping …
we can’t always help it if we run behind .
some clients have loads of hair and takes ages to blow dry
they don’t always inform you , some clients are 25 minutes late
we can’t turn away all late clients as we then lose takings
I really hate running late but often it’s not my fault ,
I always text clients to let them know though so they can set off later

She’s clearly not a busy stylist. One client on a Saturday….

Sounds like your salon is full of arseholes then? My stylist understands that while I can afford the costs etc., I’m unable to add an extra £20-30 as a tip.

Yeah she said she hated it! I only have this booked in today so not bothered really, it’s frustrating but it is what it is

Why are you so salty that other people don't tip and you feel obliged to? Post after post about how non tippers must be tight or gossiped about. Are you OK?
I've never asked or been expected to in any salons in SW England, midlands or south Wales. No tip jars no option on the card machines.

Cadenza12 · 16/08/2025 11:46

No way would I wait an hour.

Not surprised they’re happy to let you wait if you never tip!

I will never understand the tipping culture. What makes you decide which people you tip and which you don’t. Why do you find it acceptable to tip your hairdresser but not the person serving you on the tills in Tesco?

If a service is advertised at a certain price that’s what you should pay. Being pressured or shamed into paying even more on top is not ok.
