How long is acceptable to wait in the salon for your appointment?

Just that really. Currently at the salon and my stylist is running at least half an hour behind, I’ve been waiting for 25 minutes as it stands. She knows I’m here and told me to take a seat, but I’m just wondering how long you’d wait before saying something?!

I was left for over an hour once, mid treatment, without a word.

I found it incredibly rude and I never went back after that.

So? Was the nurse tipped, the care home worker, the primary school teacher, the bus conductor, the baker, the butcher?

Certainly teacher was. I would suggest that many of those others were given a small gift or bunch of flowers eg even the lollipop lady. I come though from a country where people do these things as a matter of course.

Namechangedagain999 · 16/08/2025 12:25

It happened me years ago. A male stylist who had previously always been very nice. I arrived on time for my appointment and he was working on someone’s hair and an hour later he still was. Not a word to me and we 3 were the only people there. It really appeared that he was making conversation with her for the sake of it really inane conversation and holding previous girl back almost deliberately and occasionally glancing at me. I am ashamed to say I lost it in the end. There was nothing I didn’t say. Really really angry. I had 2 small kids at home and it wasn’t that easy to get out on a Saturday for hair cut. It just felt really disrespectful.

I’ve never seen a single person tip. The salon is card only, no option to tip on the card machine, and no tip jar on the desk!

There might not be the option for you to add a tip to the card machine, but if you say to the stylist something like "please add £5 on for yourself, they will be able to do it. However as you have been kept waiting so long, I wouldn't bother this time.

spirit20 · 16/08/2025 12:26

ThatCyanSheep · 16/08/2025 11:38

She’s explained now it was because of another stylist being off sick and a client needing an appointment before her holiday - otherwise I was blocked in for the whole day. Guess it’s not because I’m a mean bastard after all!

Did she seriously use a client needing an appointment before her holiday as an excuse? if the client doesn't book on time, that's the clients problem.

I'd be really annoyed if I was made wait because they gave priority to someone who couldn't be bothered to make a proper appointment.

Nearly an hour behind and I’m in the chair! I’ve never once been asked to tip

You don't get asked to tip! 😔 It's just expected. How did you get to be an adult without realising you tip hairdressers?

mondaytosunday · 16/08/2025 12:27

15 max. It is common practise to tip (unless the owner), and separately to the person (if different) who washes your hair.

R0ckandHardPlace · 16/08/2025 12:28

I waited over an hour a few weeks ago. After 30 minutes they called the junior to shampoo me, and when I got back to the chair my stylist had just started colouring another customer. I was seething. Not a word of apology either.

I'm from the UK, had 3 children go through school and never once known anyone to tip the teachers, but all cultures are different.

Never once given a gift to a teacher either! We signed cards at the end of a-level but aside from that we never did gifts

At the people saying you deserve to wait if you don't tip... Seriously?!
Hair cuts have increased in price dramatically over the last few years if they need tips to survive they should be taking that into account with their standard pricing. The hairdressers I've been to seem to have more disposable income than me based on how many times they seem to have only just got back off holiday and have already booked another one. Many of them are doing just fine. And if I'm going to spending £50+ for a trim, I'm not going to be topping up with a tip

Its not expected, some people choose to which is appreciated, but id never think badly of anyone or give them a sub standard service because they didnt tip.

Nobody tips. We’re in England, not American!

Of course they do, it's standard to tip hairdressers.

Well what can I say - you have explained yourself 100%

Same way you got to be an adult without realising millions of us don’t, I should think.

Toohightoofar · 16/08/2025 12:38

Never tipped a hairdresser or a delivery driver. Tip in restaurants that's it. You're not unusual op! Have never seen the option to tip in a hair salon.

I’m English, in my 70s and have always tipped hairdressers. I have never before heard of anyone not tipping them.

I was brought up to think it was more or less obligatory - my mum, who was a not-at-all-well-off working widow, used to give the junior who did the shampooing sixpence as well as a bigger tip to the actual hairdresser.

Horses7 · 16/08/2025 12:39

Give stylist your number and ask her to text if running very late! That’s what I do at hair/nail salon.

yes this. Its a bit more than sixpence now though.

Horses7 · 16/08/2025 12:41

Ps I do tip.

Summer19 · 16/08/2025 12:42

It is tight not to tip your hairdresser or beautician. If you can afford to spend £200/300 getting your hair done (I’m guessing as you said you can’t afford a £20/30 tip, probably 10%), then you can afford to tip. It isn’t the norm to tip your dentist or hygienist. There is no tips jar at my salon either, I pay by card and always have a cash tip ready.

homehaircut · 16/08/2025 12:43

Totally agree with the frustration of waiting (despite my user name, I do go to a salon!). My usyal hairdresser was amazing, efficient when doing highlights etc (her colleague would leave me for ages while the colour took, fitting in at least two others for a cut) while I was in and out in 1.5 hours with her rather than 2.5. She sadly left abruptly and of course the owners won’t say where she’s gone so I booked into a new place with excellent google reviews this week. No free chairs in the waiting area so they sat me down at a (dirty) nail station, said there’d be a wait and then ignored me for 15 mins. I walked out. This was my non working day in my stressful work week and my relaxation time is precious! Will probably have to go back to previous salon where admittedly they don’t make you wait but do take forever (and the owners isn’t as good a cutter). It’s a minefield.

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 16/08/2025 12:43

Mine kept me waiting 15 minutes the other day and I did start to get impatient because 1) there was no apology; 2) no drink or magazine so I was just sitting there; and 3) I could see the reason she was late because she was continually stopping to chat. I don’t turn up to my appointment 15 minutes late and sit down without a word of explanation so I don’t expect hairdressers to do that to clients. It’s rude.

sugarapplelane · 16/08/2025 12:44

Ignore all those telling you off for not tipping a hairdresser. They are the moral police and you do not owe them an explanation why you don’t tip.
A tip is nice, but not obligatory. A hair cut and colour costs me the best bit of £120 every time I go. It’s a treat to me. I can’t afford a tip on top of that.
I hate that the American tipping culture is slowly making its way over here. I tip in restaurants (if the service is good) but I don’t tip delivery drivers. That’s madness - I’ll be tipping the postman next!!!!
