How long is acceptable to wait in the salon for your appointment?

Just that really. Currently at the salon and my stylist is running at least half an hour behind, I’ve been waiting for 25 minutes as it stands. She knows I’m here and told me to take a seat, but I’m just wondering how long you’d wait before saying something?!

I hate it when this happens, half an hour max before saying something. But I'd expect her to come and say something if it's going to be longer than half an hour. Also I'd not tip or use them again !

I don’t tip anyway!! Never knew I was meant to! I love this salon and the stylist so I’ll probably come back, it’s just frustrating

Is it somewhere you go often? Are they normally late? Is it an amazing stylist? Do you have anything to go to later? How desperate are you for a cut?

All these would sway what I'd do. If I had to go elsewhere, it wasnt an amazing stylist and I wasn't desperate for a cut, I'd tell her sorry, I have another appointment and can't wait- then leave. But after 30mins yes, I'd ask how much longer it would be?

Lizzim18 · 16/08/2025 11:04

I’d say 5 - 15 mins max. My hairdresser would not make me wait longer than that. If someone else was late to their appointment or didn’t book in for the right time that shouldn’t be the next client’s problem.

KarmenPQZ · 16/08/2025 11:08

Does it have an impact on your day? Ie if you need to be somewhere for a certain time then you need to communicate that I think. If not then just sit tight.

burn think asking for an update, 30 mins after your appointment was supposed to start is a good plan.

it might not be hairdressers fault and someone could have made her late by being late or a delayed train so if you otherwise like them def give the benefit of the doubt.

they should be able to give you an idea of when your appointment is due to start and make sure they don’t rush through yours to try to catch up. You’ve paid for a good service.

Limehawkmoth · 16/08/2025 11:15

My hairdresser always runs late- it really pisses me off at time, but then I can’t be arsed to find a new one ! But delays are10-15 mins . She talks too much- literally stops cutting while she is talking 🤦🏼‍♀️🙄🤣

BUT anything over 20 mins would be unacceptable without a very good 1 off excuse.

at very least they should have phoned you and told you before you left to get there, and offered to rebook or you agreed and turned up later.

id being saying, at end on paying, something like “ btw, if there’s going to be a delay on my appointment by more than 15 mins ever agian, please call me to discuss options, at time” and see what reaction is. If they say they won’t, start looking for new salon.

You don’t tip a stylist you love?

That may be why they don’t mind making you wait.

GardenGaff · 16/08/2025 11:21

I’d have left by now. Anything more than about 15 minutes is really poor time management on her part.

ThatCyanSheep · 16/08/2025 11:24

Nearly an hour behind and I’m in the chair! I’ve never once been asked to tip

NellieJean · 16/08/2025 11:25

More inclined to wait if there’s a sincere apology, an explanation and a firm time given. Otherwise I’m off, there are six hairdressers within five hundred yards of each other on our high street.

They don't ask. It's at your discretion.

What choice do you have other than to wait? You could ask to rebook if you don't have time to stay. They might for mid week. I doubt they'll have availability for next Saturday.

I love my dental hygienist, wouldn’t dream if tipping her

TripTrapSnipSnap · 16/08/2025 11:28

They're not going to ask you to tip.

If you don't have the time to wait I would've said something at the half hour point. Happily sitting there for an hour gives the impression that you don't mind waiting!

Dental hygienists earn significantly more than hairdressers!

Do they?? My hairdresser owns the salon and seems to be doing ok.

Slightly different then.
Mine is exceptional, in high demand, but doesn’t own the salon. Wouldn’t dream of not tipping.

Then salons need to pay their staff more. They charge insane prices without having the same operating expenses as dental practices. They also haven't had to fork out for the same level of education/training

Nobody will ask you to tip in the UK anyway, but it could explain why you weren't prioritised over a previous client

I’ve never seen a single person tip. The salon is card only, no option to tip on the card machine, and no tip jar on the desk!

So when you're tipping you're not really tipping then: you're paying for a service upgrade
