How long is acceptable to wait in the salon for your appointment?

Just that really. Currently at the salon and my stylist is running at least half an hour behind, I’ve been waiting for 25 minutes as it stands. She knows I’m here and told me to take a seat, but I’m just wondering how long you’d wait before saying something?!

I never tip. I pay for a service and that's it. Keeping you waiting for this amount of time is rude and unprofessional. Depending on the car parking situation I'd probably have to leave.

If you’re not on the wind up I’d be embarrassed if I was you.

Again - why? We don’t have uber eats or deliveroo where I am. The delivery drivers are employed on a wage.

Not in England… I’m Irish and we tip everyone. Well my family do at least!

I would feel so awkward not leaving a little something extra.

My grandparents even tip the staff on airlines as they’re getting off the plane.

I suspect this is location dependent and the other posters live in the middle of nowhere, I can imagine a tipping culture in rural areas or other countries, but not fully developed/built up areas in England.

I’ve never seen a single person tip. The salon is card only, no option to tip on the card machine, and no tip jar on the desk!

You just tell them what you want them to charge!

Taxis and hairdressers are what it is the custom to tip in the UK.

Now THAT has to be a wind up! They tip people who are pretty well paid?!

I once went to tip my hairdresser and she was embarrassed by it and said oh no don’t be silly I’m doing my job , she didn’t look like it happens often in their salon .

I don’t tip , paramedics don’t get tips and nor do teachers . We have customers who try and give us a couple of quid for helping them out to the car with their stuff and I always say no I’m doing my job at the end of the day . A lot of hairdressers now ain’t employed by the salon they just pay for their chair so once they’ve paid their rent they can earn what they like .

I ALWAYS tip. Always have. In UK.

💯

PuppyMonkey · 16/08/2025 12:03

Also you need to tip the Amazon driver. And Evri. And the postman. And all the people you buy from on Vinted. Grin

Moremustard · 16/08/2025 12:03

No one is expected to tip, but the favour the previous client got last minute may have been because she does..you don't know. If a hairdresser is very popular they can pick and choose their clients. I'm not saying you should have to wait for an appointment (like you often do at the doctor's) but it suggests your hairdresser is in high demand. If they do the right thing by every client.. appointments could well run over though

MKDex · 16/08/2025 12:03

Last time I went to the hairdresser it cost me £150 and the amount of time I spent with a person actually in contact with my head was about 45 min. No way am I tipping on top of that.

This is the thing - if we’re now all expected to tip, where do we draw the line? Is it dependent on wage? On the type of job being done? Am I expected to tip my bus driver?

No. I’m not. I’ve genuinely never seen people tip outside of a hospitality setting.

You must have lived a very sheltered life then or you are oblivious to others eg I see people tipping in my nail place and hair salon. It doesn't really matter though what others do . I don't tip because others do. I tip because I get excellent service from someone or not as the case may be. My hairdresser I tip 20 every 8 weeks. My nail people I tip 3 pounds. I tip our postman 50 at Christmas as he goes above and beyond. I tip in restaurants depending on service. Last night I tipped 15 on a 95 pound bill.

Dental hygienists earn significantly more than hairdressers!

Not mine. She owns the salon and charges £85 for my cut and blow dry.

No that's ridiculous unless they have done you a special favour and they are a regular I would imagine.

I’m genuinely having my eyes opened. I’ll tip a few quid at a restaurant- round up so if it’s £92, up to £100, but I don’t tip my postman! He comes once every three days and usually just dumps parcels outside.

Honestly just ignore these people and stop engaging. Your thread has been derailed enough by this discussion.

Moremustard · 16/08/2025 12:06

Your bus driver is probably not giving you a personal service, but if it's a regular route and you say please and thank you he may hold the doors if your running late next time lol

Ah, this is turning into a tipping thread! Very divisive.
I think they have charges which are decided on, presumably calculated. If you pay their rate I personally think that's fine, and no need for extra but as you can see, many disagree!

legoplaybook · 16/08/2025 12:06

I'd don't tip anyone who's charging me for a service - they've already told me how much money they want??

OverTheRainboww · 16/08/2025 12:07

That being said I always very much appreciate a tip but don’t expect it. We accept card in the salon and 95% of clients pay by card so don’t tip. I do have a little tip jar on my station as do the rest of the stylists so some clients tend to pop a bit of loose change in there. A few people will give me a note in my hand as a tip after paying by card but I do find this tends to be clients over a certain age.

Some clients know my coffee order and will bring me a Starbucks to their appointment which is also greatly appreciated, especially when I’m working a long day.

jamnpancakes · 16/08/2025 12:07

In the " olden days" even ordinary working people would give a Christmas tip to their milkman, paperboy , coal man etc. It wasn't much - would often be a bottle - but it was the thought that counted.

Agree.
Back to the original question. My hairdresser always runs late, but is always apologetic and is a great stylist. I wouldn't wait more than 20 mins though.
