To think this is not abscene…but fairly normal?!

I have moved house and I finally have a walk in wardrobe. I’ve decided to hang everything except trousers. Friend said this was an obscene amount of clothing and laughed so much. I think it’s not that crazy 😅 what do you think obscene or normal? 🤣 this is just the top section, next section over is dresses and coats etc.

From a man's perspective, not at all obscene, the amount of clothing and footwear I posess is large, but it's psychological with me, being 6'4" with a figure to match since adolescence, I used to have terrible problems obtaining affordable larger sizes and size 13 footwear, but since the days of the internet, over 20 years for me now, that all changed,on ebay size 13/14 shoes galore !.......in recent months I've been purchasing a fair few garments from temu, all sizes, great prices, and no, I don't feel guilty about it !

CoffeeAndStripedtops · 12/08/2025 13:57

I love your warderobe, all the stripy tops! I have a similar amount (and style, actualy) to you and consider it pretty normal...
I do love a walk-in closet...

Lifeofthepartay · 12/08/2025 14:05

I think is very subjective, but I agree with your friend..if I compare to what I have, I would say you have a lot of clothes. I can see at least 8 short sleeved black tops for example, 6 short sleeved white ones and 10 white and navy stripey ones! no way you need that many 😂

PestoHoliday · 10/08/2025 19:39

Holy shit, that's 72 tops! That's absolutely loads.

7 black t-shirts, for heaven's sake. Why would you need an entire week's worth of black unless you're a) working a salon or b) a ninja.

🥷🥷😂😂

5 of the top striped ones are T-shirts with variations, some are fitted and some are loose, two are black/white, the one further over is a long sleeve ribbed top, the ones on the bottom are various wool and jersey jumpers and one is a cardigan. All have different uses for different times of the year.

I don't dare show my wardrobe! Your friend would definitely be horrified! 🤣

I'd be too ashamed! Lets just say I really, really love clothes!

Daffodilsarefading · 12/08/2025 19:54

I suppose it highlights the fact that everyone has their own style and many people have several similar items.
The op obviously likes stripes 😀. I’m the same with spots. I have 1 spotted t shirt, 1 spotted vest style top, a pair of sling back polka dot shoes, 5 polka dot summer dresses which all fit me. Plus a polka dot silk scarf. I recently sold a polka dot skirt and 2 polka dot dresses due to them no longer fitting.

That's the difference - I love a few of my things but I'm not terribly interested in clothes.

I wish I understood clothes better. My daughter is amazing at it and loves shopping. Her outfits are amazing. I want to find what I like laid out in front of my in my size and favourite colours when I walk into a shop while she can rummage through charity shops for hours.

My addiction is novels (I'd be embarrassed to show you my teetering stacks on every available surface). We all have our obsessions.

DorothyWainwright · 12/08/2025 20:18

That looks fine. It's tidier than my messy wardrobe too.

I need a whole second wardrobe for gym kit tbh.

Oh definitely. I also used to be a book lover, but I'm registered partially sighted now (due to MS) so it takes too long to finish a book. I go for interiors mags instead (I love interiors even more than clothes)

@Kitchenbattle what about my question re the 10 white/navy stripe tops?

Maybe that’s her thing, is what looks good and she likes to wear it often without needing to wash the same one multiple times? One rule of thumb about style is when you find something that suits you or looks good on you by multiple items. admittedly you might buy different colours but even so if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

I have 2 of the exact same top for that reason .
I find it very difficult to get a good fit , I was fed up ordering and returning clothes that were a poor fit / too small / too big so I got the same top that I’d bought last year and I have a few stripe t shirts of similar shape albeit each one slightly different colours

Exactly and I’ve realised that the majority of my clothes are black. I’ve only recently started buying brightly coloured knits but black is fine for me. It’s chic; it goes with everything; something not that smart can look smarter….

In that case, maybe 2/3 of the same top at a push but surely 5 short sleeve white tops with navy stripe (and that’s ignoring the other 5 that are slightly different) aren’t needed.

JillMW · 16/08/2025 15:15

That looks very few clothes to me, it is all relative. I would not waste all that space hanging t shirts particularly as many seem to be repeats.

I haven’t got much else to hang, that’s my whole wardrobe 🤣 I’ve always folded my T-shirts and to be honest it’s just such a faf and then when I go to wear them they need to be ironed all over again. This way they get ironed and hung up and they are ready to wear.

I've got a quarter of that

FunMustard · 20/11/2025 16:33

I don't think it's obscene but it's also definitely not a capsule! Unless of course you just do washing once a month or something?!

LakieLady · 20/11/2025 16:45

Not obscene at all, OP. I'd say I have roughly the same number of tops, although my jumpers are folded and in a deep drawer, separate from the rest.

I also have a few near-identical Breton tops, but my samey ones are mostly navy/white, white/navy or navy/multi. I hate tops that have narrow or round necklines, so the the wide neck of a Breton is something I find very comfortable and I buy a lot of them. Shops like Sea Salt and Crew invariably have a "buy 2 get one half price" or similar deal going on, so I never buy one at a time.

I could easily go away for a fortnight, put on a clean top every morning and change to another for the evening without needing to wash any of them.
