To think this is not abscene…but fairly normal?!

I have moved house and I finally have a walk in wardrobe. I’ve decided to hang everything except trousers. Friend said this was an obscene amount of clothing and laughed so much. I think it’s not that crazy 😅 what do you think obscene or normal? 🤣 this is just the top section, next section over is dresses and coats etc.

looks just like my wardrobe- maybe a little less

Maternityleavelady · 11/08/2025 23:00

I only wish mine was as neat and tidy as yours. Hard to tell as mine is so messy but pretty sure it is similar in volume. I just filled a sack for the charity shop so these are the after shots (the keepers). One is dresses and coats. The other is tops and trousers. Jumpers, sports kit, PJs are in drawers

Normal. Good job your friend can’t see my wardrobe.

beautifuldaytosavelives · 11/08/2025 23:07

Nowhere near obscene. Lovely wardrobe set up.

I’d say it’s up to 10 at any one point. I have 3 short sleeve t-shirts, 2 shirts, 2 tops and 1 loose fitting vest. There was a point not long ago that it was half this and I had to force myself to go shopping. I then pack this all away around October and change it out for my 3 long sleeve tops and smart knits as below.

For knitwear I have 2 smart knitted jumpers that double as work tops, a fleece, a zip though and one loose knitted jumper, so 5. I have a warm thick coat for winter and a waterproof option. I work mostly remote and my life doesn’t tend to have a need for occasion wear, I’m still trying to figure out a winter wedding guest outfit for later this year that could potential have more than one use

It’s not for everyone but I find when I own less I manage so much better

Thanks for clarifying! I have been slowly editing my wardrobe down but I am not sure I could ever go this minimal! I agree with you that less is more manageable for sure

MaidOfSteel · 11/08/2025 23:41

Your friend is probably a bit envious. That’s most definitely not an obscene amount of clothes!

Mama2many73 · 11/08/2025 23:53

For me that would be a lot but to be honest I KNOW i have few clothes. I hate clothes shopping and I'll keep things for yrs BUT its nobody business but uours! Looks beautifully oranised!

Calloja23 · 12/08/2025 00:07

I’ve got at least four times this so goodness knows what she would think of me. I think she’s jealous of your new walk in wardrobe. Tell her you’re more than happy with it, you don’t do “minimalist”!

ChildFreeAndOhSoHappy · 12/08/2025 00:08

Multiply it by 10 and you have my wardrobe. Def not obscene by any stretch.

Justsomethoughts23 · 12/08/2025 00:14

Tbh it looks like a small amount to me but also they’re all kind of the same? Do you have a separate wardrobe for dressy stuff? I would need more variety!

Yeah this sounds crazy to me. It’s so disciplined and practical but I’d be v bored looking at the same ten tops week in, week out. I guess also if you have very few items then each one needs to be bland enough to work with lots of other things so mostly quite plain? I’m slightly in awe of the minimalism but I like clothes too much for that!

jamnpancakes · 12/08/2025 00:20

I like your grouping by colour, sleeve length etc . I'm also a lover of stripes! I have more than you. That's not an obscene amount.

freerangethighs · 12/08/2025 00:32

It's a strange comment, to me. If you were complaining about not having enough space for your clothes or it being a hassle to move them all, then her saying it's an excessive amount or more than anyone really needs might make sense. But "obscene" is not a neutral word choice; apparently she thinks it is shockingly unethical to have this many clothes? That's likely a difference in world view between the two of you and if your closet and wardrobe work for your life and you're not out of control buying new stuff you don't need, I'd probably just ignore.

Tangerinenets · 12/08/2025 00:47

Looks a normal amount of clothes to me. I have twice as much 😂

DirtyBird · 12/08/2025 01:06

I’ve had three times that amount (just did a huge purge recently). Almost all of my friends have much more than that. One of my friends has 100 pairs of shoes and has clothes in three closets and in plastic tubs that she switches out depending on the season 😂

cruisingqueen · 12/08/2025 01:27

You are much better than me!

Sodastreamin · 12/08/2025 01:42

It’s a normal amount for a bloke I’d say. Why haven’t you shared your section, OP?

That’s nothing to be proud of… In fact to me, it screams superficial and vain

DiaryofaProvincialLady · 12/08/2025 01:56

All looks like mens clothes. And shoes.

Jumpingthruhoops · 12/08/2025 02:56

Trust me, if your friend thinks this amount is obscene, she really has seen NOTHING!

FourCatMama · 12/08/2025 04:55

Not too many clothes to me...I had a whole bedroom turned into a closet with space also for shoes and purses, wallets, etc.

ContactLensCosts · 12/08/2025 05:29

Looks fine to me. I love fashion and am in my fifties so have far more clothes than this. Esp as I store summer/winter clothes when out of season. Enjoy your wardrobe!

Chandler22 · 11/08/2025 18:28

“I’ve moved house and finally have a walk in wardrobe” Ooohh get you. What was the point of mentioning if your post was supposedly about having too many clothes (Because you’re humble bragging on Mumsnet) And no, no jealousy whatsoever. I have a full dressing room in our 5 bed house that 3 of us live in but I don’t make posts on here bragging about it

You just have. You sound more braggy than the OP.

I don’t have a walk in wardrobe or dressing room, but found there to be nothing braggy about the OP. Lots of bitter and unhappy respondents here though!

ContactLensCosts · 12/08/2025 05:40

Just read more of the comments. So many unhappy people here posting nasty comments about the OP being both a show-off and boring!! That’s you OP, a boring bragger!

We all have different styles. That is the point of fashion. I don’t wear stripes but I know that many people love them. You might buy several of the same tops because you love them and have found a style and fit that suits so you want to make sure you have some spare. Maybe you want to wear that top every day so it’s nice to have an extra so you don’t have to do the laundry every day. I don’t know, but there is no reason to lay into the OP!

I love my extensive wardrobe. I have lots of beautiful shoes, it’s my ‘art’ I guess. Fashion is my indulgence and I make no apology for it. Of course by posting here, OP is attracting negative comments from the Miserable of Mumsnet. But do ignore them OP, you have done a great job. You have the right number of clothes for you and that’s all that matters.

This just seems so inefficient to me, you must have to wash and dry clothes every day or two and unless you're part of a large family would never have a full washing machine. Do you not do any exercise? Or wear more layers in winter?
