To think this is not abscene…but fairly normal?!

I have moved house and I finally have a walk in wardrobe. I’ve decided to hang everything except trousers. Friend said this was an obscene amount of clothing and laughed so much. I think it’s not that crazy 😅 what do you think obscene or normal? 🤣 this is just the top section, next section over is dresses and coats etc.

Blades2 · 11/08/2025 18:29

Uhm I probably own more pyjamas than that. And twice the amount of band tees alone in tops, your friends a bit odd

Figcherry · 11/08/2025 18:32

“I’ve moved house and finally have a walk in wardrobe” Ooohh get you. What was the point of mentioning if your post was supposedly about having too many clothes (Because you’re humble bragging on Mumsnet) And no, no jealousy whatsoever. I have a full dressing room in our 5 bed house that 3 of us live in but I don’t make posts on here bragging about it

You just bragged about a 5 bedroom house. 😂

I was being a little sarcastic

LoveSandbanks · 11/08/2025 18:38

I don’t think it’s obscene but I, personally, find it a bit overwhelming. But then again, I don’t think I’ve ever had more than 2 pairs of jeans at a time.

I have enough trouble trying to decide which pair of knickers to wear in the morning, deciding between which black t-shirt to wear would kill me! 🤣

Sgreenpy · 11/08/2025 18:43

Looks like a fairly standard amount of clothes to me if its all hung up!
I have way more clothes than you're showing here, and I dont feel my wardrobe is obscene tbf.

MalcolmMoo · 11/08/2025 18:48

it’s not minimalist but also not loads, I’d probably say an average amount really

AlertCat · 11/08/2025 18:48

I find it interesting. If all my stuff was hung up like that rather than “folded” and stuffed to the back of a drawer, I think I would have much more than OP- but I don’t think it’s obscene. Of those who think it’s OTT, have you honestly done an inventory of your wardrobe so you aren’t just assuming you have fewer items?

ArtfulDenimSheep · 11/08/2025 18:51

Not obscene at all, beautifully arranged. She's probably jealous. Could you come and sort my wardrobe out 😄

Onelifeonly · 11/08/2025 18:58

I decided recently that "too many clothes" only relates to how much storage you have. IMO if it all has a place in a wardrobe / chest of drawers or whatever storage one has, it's fine. There's no too much, maybe there is a too little though? I have far more than I technically need but still feel there are gaps! I don't tend to throw things away or recycle readily; as long as something is still useful (or could be) and I still like it enough, it stays. The more you have, the less you wear each piece, and so you can keep them longer (unless you follow fashion trends lavishly, I suppose).

Willquery123 · 10/08/2025 19:12

Looks great. Wish my wardrobes were as organised!

This was my first thought too! x

RosyDaysAhead · 11/08/2025 19:02

I think it depends on what you’ve bought, if these are investment pieces, classic designer tops that have cost money and not fast fashion then no, it’s a lot but it’s not obscene. Some people have a wardrobe of classic pieces that they invest in and can be worn regardless of current fashion trends. Why would you discard these pieces? So imagining a quarter or a third of what’s there are pieces you might wear to work, funerals or weddings or just nice event clothes and the rest is casual clothes plus winter and summer splits. I think this is fairly normal. It’s lore likely your friend is a fast fashion person who discards her clothes and buys new cheaper items at the end of each season.

@Chandler22 Pot. Kettle. Black.

Squirrelandnuts · 11/08/2025 19:14

@Kitchenbattle
You're so organised.

I try, but within, the week, I resort to the landing rail. As for the folded stuff, once i take one or two jumpers out, the whole idea collapses.

Very well done to you.

Catwoman8 · 11/08/2025 19:25

I don't think it is obscene amount, however there is is so much of the same thing, surely you don't need that many white, black and stripey tops? 😆

cheziebabe · 11/08/2025 19:25

your friend is rude. is she always this judgemental? you don't need people who get off on making you feel less. if she does this regularly or talks about you to others, I'd dump her by ghosting

Flamingoknees · 11/08/2025 19:36

I have a lot more, despite 2 massive clear outs this year. I have to vacuum pack between summer and winter. Most of what's survived the cull was bought in 2023/4.
I've bought only a handful of things this year, and have promised myself to wear what I have for the foreseeable future. Once I feel like everythings been worn, my dream is a very limited but loved and frequently worn wardrobe. With no vacuum packing, and everything in one wardrobe.
I commented yesterday, how I have worn a summer dress once this year, despite having rather a lot 😳
I dream of an uncluttered space like yours OP.
I'm mid 50s.

Mumoftwoandcats · 11/08/2025 19:42

Definitely not obscene amount IMO, it’s not like you’ve 10 of the same top! I wish I was as organised as you, enjoy your new walk in wardrobe 🙂

Givenupshopping · 11/08/2025 19:44

I'm amazed that so many of you think this is 'normal'. I bet if you did the thing where you put everything in the wardrobe with the hangers facing out, and turn them round when you've worn the item and put it back, you'd probably find that you only actually wear a VERY small percentage of what you have OP. They say that most people only actually wear 20% of what they have, so why keep wasting money on stuff you've probably only worn once or twice? Better instead to put the money in a pot every time you go to buy something similar to what's already in your wardrobe, you'd soon have enough for a nice holiday, if you did that.

Wolfpinkola · 11/08/2025 19:57

I found it very soothing to look at, I like your jackets at the end

SophiaSW1 · 11/08/2025 20:02

I would think this is less than the average.

TheOpalReader · 11/08/2025 20:30

It's a lot to me, I have about 10 tops, 3/4 pairs of trousers, 5 jumpers and a handful of dresses/skirts/shorts. Probably about 50 pairs of shoes though ha! However I wouldn't call that an obscene amount. And really if you wear them and enjoy them then why not!

Dillydollydingdong · 11/08/2025 20:32

I couldn't deal with it. My summer wear is half a dozen pairs of shorts, 3/4 tops and tee shirts, a couple of pairs of jeans and an ordinary pair of light trousers. If I had any more clothes I just wouldn't wear them!

EatingHealthy · 11/08/2025 20:36

You have a similar number of items to me and I don't think I have an obscene amount. I think yours looks like a lot because it's a lot of the same kind of item, whereas mine is more obviously varied (at least to me) in terms of function - so my 70 odd tops includes vest tops/thermal long sleeves to wear as layers in autumn and winter, shirts for work and exercise tops (for both hot and cold weather) in addition to short sleeved and long sleeved t-shirts, more dressy tops and casual and smarter jumpers. So whereas you have around 25 what look like short sleeved t-shirts I have fewer than ten of any one category. But if actually yours perform all of those functions I.e. you have particular t-shirts for work, or exercise or general wear it makes sense you would have more of what looks to a casual observer as one kind of wear.
