To think this is not abscene…but fairly normal?!

I have moved house and I finally have a walk in wardrobe. I’ve decided to hang everything except trousers. Friend said this was an obscene amount of clothing and laughed so much. I think it’s not that crazy 😅 what do you think obscene or normal? 🤣 this is just the top section, next section over is dresses and coats etc.

Love your thread OP.

Wardrobe porn. I could scroll through photos of tidy, yet realistic wardrobes all day long.

Your wardrobe gives me so much satisfaction. It's perfect!

I don't have a walk in wardrobe so I live vicariously through others who do.

Tbh it looks like a small amount to me but also they’re all kind of the same? Do you have a separate wardrobe for dressy stuff? I would need more variety!

I have a few dresses for dressier occasions but I don’t have a crazy social life, I’m not a big drinker so I don’t go out often. When I do I tend to wear a dress or jeans and a top with a blazer maybe.

All looks like mens clothes. And shoes.

Sorry I don’t wear frills…ffs…

Yeah it looks a lot to me. But obscene might be a bit dramatic. It looks like you don’t have to buy a lot which is good. It’s not really how much you have and wear It’s how much you throw away/ give to landfill.

She literally does have 10 of the same top! I counted 10 white and navy stripe tops. (If you’re being pedantic you could point out that a few are long sleeve and one of those is navy base while the other nine are white base but most of them are actually identical or near as damn it!)
@Kitchenbattle genuinely curious to know why, when you were doing your clearing out and then hanging them all up next to each other, you didn’t think to yourself that you didn’t need so many of the same top?!

Edited

@Kitchenbattle what about my question re the 10 white/navy stripe tops?

Billybea · 12/08/2025 07:09

Not obscene at all, especially as you have both summer & winter tops there, I've got 3 wardrobes full of clothes, in drawers and in storage boxes under the bed! At least yours are all hanging!

Laboheme78 · 12/08/2025 07:13

First of all congratulations on your house move and great new wardrobe, which looks fab. I don’t think that’s an obscene amount of clothes for a grown woman who has presumably been the same size for most of her adult life and has built items up over time.
In my late 30s and early 40s I went through a period of thinking I must aim towards a capsule wardrobe etc etc, especially as fashion media seems obsessed with this idea, but then I realised that I love clothes and fashion and that for me it’s an absolute joy to collect, curate and wear pieces I love. So although I am very careful about what I buy I no longer care how many items I own. I regularly sort through, sometimes sell on and will pass many pieces down to my daughter one day (she wears a lot already at 15). My point is this is completely subjective. I would absolutely love to have a Carrie Bradshaw style walk in wardrobe one day, even if I’m 70..,,You do you and enjoy your clothes.

@Kitchenbattle what about my question re the 10 white/navy stripe tops?

I wear all of them to be honest, white tops can really only be worn once, they get make up on the inside of the collar sometimes. I wait until I have a few of them and I wash them separately with whitening agent to keep them white, there’s a few creamy ones there too though. The striped ones are a mix of navy/white and black/white so in my head they only match with a few other things really. One is very very thin so it’s only worn in summer or if I’m out walking and going to get overheated.

That looks like a small amount of clothes to me.

ThatCyanCat · 12/08/2025 07:35

Actually there seems to be a wide definition of a capsule wardrobe. There are some examples of capsule wardrobes online with more than 50 top and bottom pieces, not counting shoes, bags, coats and accessories.

Game0fCrones · 12/08/2025 07:41

I have four double wardrobes so its minimalist to me. 😁

Augustus40 · 12/08/2025 07:47

I possess 3 double wardrobes op!

Imisssleep2 · 12/08/2025 08:11

I wouldn't call it obscene, but alot look the same....

BleuBeans · 12/08/2025 08:28

YoshiIsCute · 11/08/2025 23:22

Thanks for clarifying! I have been slowly editing my wardrobe down but I am not sure I could ever go this minimal! I agree with you that less is more manageable for sure

I was not always like this, I used to have 2 wardrobes in my old house. There was a period of about a year where we didn’t have a lot of space so I hugely cut back. I do agree it’s probably on the extreme end of minimalism but it avoids the decisions of what to wear. On the plus side, the saying of ‘you wear only 10% of your wardrobe doesn’t apply’ in my case

BleuBeans · 12/08/2025 08:34

Justsomethoughts23 · 12/08/2025 00:18

Yeah this sounds crazy to me. It’s so disciplined and practical but I’d be v bored looking at the same ten tops week in, week out. I guess also if you have very few items then each one needs to be bland enough to work with lots of other things so mostly quite plain? I’m slightly in awe of the minimalism but I like clothes too much for that!

I agree, it is that. It’s super practical, everything goes with each other and I can just grab what I need for the day in seconds. I don’t wear patterns, it is all block colours. I don’t get enjoyment from clothes though and don’t like shopping. It really isn’t for everyone but it makes one area of my life simple when there’s so much going on

BleuBeans · 12/08/2025 08:49

EatingHealthy · 12/08/2025 05:45

This just seems so inefficient to me, you must have to wash and dry clothes every day or two and unless you're part of a large family would never have a full washing machine. Do you not do any exercise? Or wear more layers in winter?

I usually do a dark wash around every 3 days and white wash once a week. We’re only a small family but by the time we’ve thrown in one set of bedding, pjs, school uniform or towels etc we’re good to go. I find it’s the easiest way to keep on top of it for me. I put the washer on before I start work, put the spin cycle on as I make a cuppa on my break and hang it up during my lunch.

My exercise consists of walking to and from school which is about 2 miles return or a couple of miles at lunch as well as a bit of yoga stretching before bed. Nothing that really requires its own set of clothes. In winter I just add my zip through jumper on top.

I agree, like I have in previous posts, it’s not for everyone. But it works well for me. Everything matches and I can just grab something in the morning.

ohime · 12/08/2025 09:11

Goodness, I have so much more than this. You seem to have a reasonable number of items, and very well organised too. I'd worry about hanging some things though, like t-shirts, as they tend over time to take on the shape of the hanger giving you weird shoulder bulges. Trousers OTOH are very hangable and could fit nicely in the section where you have a few long coats...?

ohime · 12/08/2025 09:21

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 12/08/2025 07:06

@Kitchenbattle what about my question re the 10 white/navy stripe tops?

Ha! I probably have 15 grey jumpers, for no reason at all other than that I like them and have found that they work for me. And once you define 'grey jumper' or 'stripey top' as a category, you may find that each of the ten is subtly different and that those differences feel significant. We're all somewhere on this spectrum, which ends at my DH's bewildered remark when we were dating: 'But you already have a pair of shoes...?' 😂

RavenhairedRachel · 12/08/2025 10:09

No not obscene at all probably on par with the amount I have. My friends are about the same.

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 12/08/2025 07:06

@Kitchenbattle what about my question re the 10 white/navy stripe tops?

They are not all the same though 😂 as a stripe lover I can see that clearly - there is width of stripe, there is colour domination - is the white more dominant than the blue or black. 😂

BauhausOfEliott · 12/08/2025 10:55

It's a totally normal amount of clothes. Some people will have a lot less and some will have a lot more, and that will also mostly be within the realms or normal. I don't know anyone, even people who have very few clothes themselves, who would consider that 'obscene'. It's a wardrobe of everyday, wearable tops, nothing that looks like niche occasion wear and all stuff that I'm guessing you do wear very regularly as they're all easy-to-wear, go-with-everything type items really.

You've certainly got a lot of things that are all quite similar, but I think that's true of lots of women. If you love a stripy t-shirt, it's pretty reasonable to have a few of them.

Your wardrobe is incredibly well organised and looks great; I reckon your friend might be a bit jealous.

Emmz1510 · 12/08/2025 10:56

No, it’s not an obscene amount of clothes, is she jealous?

It really is just a matter of opinion and perspective I suppose, it’s interesting, for everyone saying it’s not a lot there’s someone saying it is. There’s a happy medium in there somewhere.

OP posts:
HumberstoneNJ · 12/08/2025 13:28

Hi. No way is that obscene! It looks great how you've neatly hung your clothes too.

It's a nice and practical number. Also, it allows you to look at wearing different tops/ woolleys over a couple of weeks, enabling laundry, a change, matching etc! It's all good!
