DH being cruel to small fish

linaplatelover · 18/07/2025 16:37

DH is part of a team sport - has been for years no issues usually with it.

he has brought home a small ‘goldfish’ in a tiny tank. This small fish has been passed around different team members. Apparently if it dies on your watch you have to pay a fine.

the fish clearly isn’t being cared for properly, the water is cloudy it has no filter or air stone.

Ive looked up the type of fish and it’s not even a goldfish - it’s a small orange tropical fish that requires a heater.

I'm absolutely furious! I hate any cruelty to animals and think this type of lads game from a 40 yr old man is ridiculous.

first off mumsnetters AIBU? And if you think no what should I do?

worst part is that DH agrees that it’s cruel but for some reason ‘doesn’t want to cause a fuss’

Please do not let it be passed on to anyone else and offer it to your local tropical fish store 😢

My words exactly

Russiandollsaresofullofthemselves · 19/07/2025 18:56

if that was my husband I would be making him buy all the right equipment and keeping the fish and not pass it on or give it to someone who already keeps fish. it is so cruel.

SilenceLover · 18/07/2025 16:40

Let them think it died and pay the fine if he doesn’t want to cause a fuss, then keep the fish, or rehome it responsibly. Personally I would be making a fuss though, can’t imagine wanting to associate with people who think that’s okay.

This! That poor fish. Sime people are absolute morons.

I was thinking exactly the same. I bet more than half of the comment from these ‘outraged’ animal lovers’ eat fish 🙄

You bet, but you don’t know this, do you.I’m vegan, but l don’t condemn people who eat meat, fish. That’s not my call, to sit in judgment. The thread is about grown men, passing around a fish, as a game, not whether people eat meat or fish, so therefore they can’t have an opinion.Might be helpful if you just stuck to the thread, which from the last update, from op has been resolved.

Say it died, pay the fine and rehome the fish!

This

Animals suffer every single day.

I was just agreeing with another comment regarding the irony.

like you, I’m also not condemning anyone for their choices. In fact, I’m glad to read that so many people are outraged by this cruel rugby tradition. I’d have thought that goes without saying.

No, there will be no "piping down" because a double standard being observed is a point of irritation to those it condemns.

Until people stop endorsing industrial farming for their own pleasure, this hypocrisy from so-called animal lovers will always exist.

It not double standards at all.How could you possibly know, what people commenting eat.I’m vegan, but l don’t sit in judgment, you should try it sometime.

Hopingtobeaparent · 19/07/2025 19:09

Change it for an actual goldfish and clean the bowl out?

KentuckyFriedPigeon · 19/07/2025 19:10

Good news for the fish hut what a massive ick about your dh.

Thistlewoman · 19/07/2025 19:12

linaplatelover · 18/07/2025 22:05

Thanks for everyone’s input.

we are keeping the fish - dh has to pay the fine.

fish now has the correct supplies and already looks happier.

Im genuinely really shocked at his behaviour - I would never think he’d partake in this kind of behaviour, and neither would our friends or family.

Thank you-you have done the right thing. And you have more decency in your toenails than your idiot husband and his gormless friends. Just make sure they don't try to repeat this with any other poor creature.

oldmanandtheangel · 19/07/2025 19:13

I WOULD actually leave someone over this.
When I worked for the RSPCA ten years ago, they did manage to prosecute for cruelty to goldfish. There was this disgusting challenge online for swallowing live ones. Also prosecuted for fish that got dumped in containers under a bridge

Redlightbulb · 19/07/2025 19:26

As someone who keeps tropical fish I find this behaviour sick & sadistic to knowingly inflict cruelty for fun.
No way could I be friends with such people & I imagine OP it has you questioning your husbands character.

That’s so out of order, I’d be livid.
wth do they think they’re doing, and where are they getting these fish from, when I got two fish from pets at home they demanded we buy a tank and ensure we had set it up correctly before they’d sell us any fish!
they are basically torturing the fish by not looking after it properly, WTH are they getting out of it

Catladywithoutacat · 19/07/2025 19:35

I would be equally mad, can you take the fish and just keep him/her?

Absolutely agree, I would be funny with my partner being so cruel to a defenceless animal

Totally different, whether you agree with eating fish or not, this is torturing a fish as part of a game.

HAB75 · 19/07/2025 19:41

Men can be so spineless in their friendship groups. I sometimes think my DH is a bit easily led, but none of his daft buddies would do something as God awful as this.

I like the idea of rehoming, but I like even better the notion of buying a tank and all the other bits and bobs, along with some fish friends for this poor blighter, as well as making your DH pay the bloody fine. The visual reminder might make him speak up next time the ringleader is being a knob.

MoonWoman69 · 19/07/2025 19:42

Hjjja · 18/07/2025 16:50

Do you all eat fish and chips?

Commercial fishing and cruelty to a tropical fish are two different things. Nobody torments haddock or cod in a tank that's not suitable for them, they're caught and despatched correctly for the food industry. Absolutely no comparison at all.
I suggest you refrain from posting ridiculous comments and go grow up!

I agree, as long as they don’t get a new fish and start the game again which they may well do

Chinsupmeloves · 19/07/2025 19:53

Awful! I would get a proper tank and some friends for it and never return to the cruel idiotic team.

The majority of posters are expressing sadness over cruelty to a goldfish yet will eat farmed fish without a second thought. That is a societal double standard. Fewer than 10% Brits are vegan - it's highly unlikely every poster here is vegan.

Pointing out a contradiction that deserves to be acknowledged is not judgement. If you're vegan, then you're not the target of these replies. Interesting that you don't appear to see this contradiction, as a vegan.

Kelly1969 · 19/07/2025 19:59

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 18/07/2025 17:03

No they are flailing round in nets on decks of ships drawing their last breath.

I don't think you can draw huge differences in your justication of fish caught to eat.

Yes farmed fish DO suffer and that’s horrific too, but that is unfortunately the nature of “farming” because people want to eat fish and meat and while they do it’s unlikely to change.
this is torture for the sake of a game, not the same thing at all and totally off topic.

Lainie · 19/07/2025 20:16

Buy a bigger tank and small heater and filter learn about cycling the tank and rescue this little fish. he will live longer and be happier the local fish shop will give you some dirt from their filters to help get the tank started with good bacteria, buy some prime and stability (from amazon) pretty soon you will want a friend for him ...
