DH being cruel to small fish

DH is part of a team sport - has been for years no issues usually with it.

he has brought home a small ‘goldfish’ in a tiny tank. This small fish has been passed around different team members. Apparently if it dies on your watch you have to pay a fine.

the fish clearly isn’t being cared for properly, the water is cloudy it has no filter or air stone.

Ive looked up the type of fish and it’s not even a goldfish - it’s a small orange tropical fish that requires a heater.

I'm absolutely furious! I hate any cruelty to animals and think this type of lads game from a 40 yr old man is ridiculous.

first off mumsnetters AIBU? And if you think no what should I do?

worst part is that DH agrees that it’s cruel but for some reason ‘doesn’t want to cause a fuss’

It's same thing on a smaller scale. Fish-eaters just see one fish's life as worth saving, while the ones they eat are still destined to die for human consumption in terrible conditions.

The selective outrage is quite apparent and the blinkers are massive. The fact you believe someone pointing out this discrepancy might not care about animal cruelty is laughable deflection. I imagine they care very much and want those who eat fish to consider their dissonant beliefs and stop supporting industrial-scale animal cruelty.

There is no such thing as "humane" killing. It's an oxymoron.

Bullshit. There is a world of difference between eating for sustenance and torturing an animal for a cheap thrill. I don't have a problem with people hunting if they are going to eat the kill, I do have a problem with killing for the sake of killing. There are ways of consuming more responsibly by buying produce that at least has some consideration for how the animal(s) are reared and minimising the environmental destructive side effects. Just drop the extremism please.

Do you also object to anyone putting down a pet that is suffering severe pain and cannot be cured, because there is no such thing as "humane killing"?

Bullshit right back at you.

People torturing a fish is bad, but people eating farmed fish is not? If you are against animals suffering, the extremist is the one that justifies one over the other instead of condemning both.

do the right thing and buy it a proper tank, it’s your pet now. They are being cruel and heartless! That is a life, poor thing

YourBrickTiger · 06/08/2025 15:05

Hope this is all sorted now. I couldn't live with someone who is being so cruel to an animal. He'd be out of my house faster than you can say fish.

Say it died, pay the fine and rehome the fish!

I say let your DH have to tell them that his wife took it into a pet shop and the pet shop has reported them to the RSPCA. That way they won’t buy a new one.

And what’s the relevance of your Q?

Fish sourced for food aren’t previously confined to a tiny polluted environment where they will experience a cruel slow end to their life 🤦🏻‍♀️

Have you ever been to a trout farm, there are so many fish in them that they struggle to swim, never mind anything else.
