To think it's normal to tie your hair back to poo or eat?

Came up in conversation with a friend, we both have just below the shoulder length hair. I tie my hair back/up whenever I go for a poo or eat a meal and she thinks this is really odd, is it? 🤔 I've always done it and thought it was something a lot of people do, especially when eating.

How is adding a hairband different to adding a scrunchie?

I can't believe I'm having to explain this, but with a hairband you just push it back from your face and your hair goes with it. With a scrunchie you have to pull your hair back into a pony tail and then put it through the scrunchie, maybe even having to double the scrunchie to keep it tight. HTH.

But you're still changing your style for the same reason, so why does it matter?

Can't believe I've had to explain that tbh.

Head band or Alice band pushes hair back from the front. Hairband is a thinish elastic to put hair in a ponytail. Scrunchie is a puffy fabric hairband.

When mine was longer, I would tie it back when I was cooking because of hygiene, but never to eat or have a poo. Really bemused about the poo one tbh

How do you manage if you've got the trots and no time to tie your hair back before running for the bathroom?

Whatwaswrongwiththatusername · 11/07/2025 15:38

I’m also in the minority according to the poll, but I often do. Difference is that my hair is well below waist length and will often put it up just to get it out of the way, for eating, bathroom etc. But it really does just get right in the way sometimes if I don’t. Never really thought about it until reading this as it’s just normal and would just put it up for any occasion it might get in the way, also including windy days etc etc. I don’t think I bothered when it was shorter - but it’s been v long for so long now I can’t even remember. And no, I don’t think I’m going to get poo on it or anything, that’s not the reason 😂 but it is long enough that I end up sitting on the bottom of it and it then pulls so I have to lift it up a bit anyway even when just sitting down, but wouldn’t tie it up just for that.

I just end up lifting it up slightly and moving it round to the side if I can’t tie it up. Tho I do almost always have something on my wrist to tie it up with at any time anyway.

I don’t tie my hair back for those ‘occasions’. I l always wonder at women who have longer hair and tie it back all the time. Just cut it short!

The reason is that long hair tied up can look really nice & in this weather it's more practical than having hair that's too short to tie up

mine Is long enough to sit on the end of it but I don’t tie it up for fear of getting poo on it, just to get it out of the way as it has a life of its own and just generally gets in the way in many situations. But I have never worried about - or got! - poo on it even if I haven’t tied it back, despite how long it is! And I really can’t see how anyone with shorter hair than mine could either. I mean what on earth is anyone doing to worry about getting poo on their hair?? Are they lying down on the loo?! And I say this as someone with very long hair, seemingly longer than op. But I can’t believe anyone (unless a LOT longer than mine, so past bum length) is tying it up to not get poo on it? Mine is literally cos it gets in the way and it’s just easier to not have to fight my hair, but that’s during anything that it might get in the way for, including cooking etc

Oh and as I’ve said elsewhere it’s NOT because I think/will get poo on it, it’s just long enough to be a nuisance and get in the way in all kinds of different situations.

AlligatorTears · 11/07/2025 15:48

Incredibly weird.

I tie mine up to do housework maybe or if it’s really hot. But to poo and eat?! Weird Af.

Noshadelamp · 11/07/2025 15:50

I do as well op!

And for those that don't put your hair back in the loo, where do you think airborne germs are going?

Vaxtable · 11/07/2025 15:50

yep weird. I have long hair, well down my back, I tie it back if cooking but not for eating for pooing. That said in this heat it’s up all the time

I mean, I'm all for tying your hair back whenever you want, but that's not going to prevent airborne germs...your hair is still in the same air space whether it's up or down....

@Noshadelamp

you must have magic airborne germs then for them to know your hairs tied back so don’t go near it!

the germs will go on your hair tied back to not!

Noshadelamp · 11/07/2025 15:55

@IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos @Vaxtable yeah I didn't explain that properly did I!

When you're hair is down the surface area is greater than when your hair is up, so more area for germs to land.

But then I don't take my phone into the loo either for the same reason.

Maybe I'm a little germ-phobic 😅

thecatneuterer · 11/07/2025 15:57

The bonkerness of people never ceases to amaze. I'm just gobsmacked that it's not 100 per cent YABU

It doesn't - to me - I don't do it. I was just suggesting an easier alternative to OP for when she's eating. The going to the loo bit I simply don't understand.

You said she was being unreasonable for changing her style, then suggested she change the style in a different way.

Make your mind up.

You could just close the lid before you flush.

Ariela · 11/07/2025 16:06

As a teenager I could almost sit on it, and I always had it tied up - usually French plait or 2 ponytails or whatever, never tied it back on purpose for specific poo or eat.

Yes, that's just weird!

I honestly thought it was normal, I'm now rethinking my whole life!

Fraggeek · 11/07/2025 16:14

Personally, my pubes have never been long enough to get in the way.

Zanatdy · 11/07/2025 16:15

Sorry very odd
