To think it's normal to tie your hair back to poo or eat?

Came up in conversation with a friend, we both have just below the shoulder length hair. I tie my hair back/up whenever I go for a poo or eat a meal and she thinks this is really odd, is it? 🤔 I've always done it and thought it was something a lot of people do, especially when eating.

I can sort of understand you wanting to keep your hair off your face when eating but going to the toilet? Are you sticking your head in the bowl?

Blades2 · 12/07/2025 19:35

Is having a shit really that strenuous that you have to tie your hair up?
im weird and this is the oddest thing I’ve probably read.

This made me laugh because why would someone make up a poo thread this boring?

Reminds me of a few years ago on the Rate My Plate Facebook group when I posted a photo of my sister's lunch - a big bowl of Brussels sprouts and hard boiled eggs, absolutely drenched in vinegar. A guy went on about how disgusting it was people wasting food for likes when it really was my sister's food she regularly ate 😂

Not the point of the thread I know but.....a diet of sprouts and boiled eggs?
Does your sister have many friends? 🦨

Bikergran · 12/07/2025 19:49

Eat, yes. But unless you can sit on your hair, as my grandmother could in her youth, then you really don't need to tie it back to poo!!!!

I did, it was past my bum and I hated it being touched, washed, brushed. I do have a very specific phobia about flying insects getting caught in my hair as well so maybe it's protection to not get a bee in my hair when I'm in a vulnerable state 😂 Hoping someone will come along and explain why they do it but it looks like it is quite a weird thing to do 😟

It sounds like you might have OCD - contrary to popular belief it’s not just about germs/hygiene, it can cause all kinds of illogical behaviours. I have it and I do loads of stuff I thought was normal until I gradually found out other people don’t do these things! Tying back my hair when pooing is not one of my particular eccentricities, but we’re all different!

Thereader91 · 12/07/2025 21:59

My daughter does but her hair touches her bum so she needs to. However she almost always wears it in a pony plait at my insistence.... She's 8 and I've got ZERO desire to de-louse her hair so it's staying up minimum 5 days a week 🤣

Calloja23 · 13/07/2025 05:45

If this is actually a serious post….no it is not normal to do either. Do you not notice what others do when eating with regard to tying back hair? With regard to the other function. - that’s just weird, definitely no!

CatsnCoffee · 13/07/2025 07:42

Always to wash up and, obviously, to cook.

TeaPlzx · 13/07/2025 09:11

I wonder, are you neurodivergent? I tie my hair up to drive, eat, sleep. If my hair is down for too long, it gives me this sort of panicky and frustrated feeling. I’ve realised it’s mostly a sensory thing.

Have you thought about getting it cut short? That might solve all those issues.

Wot

My DH can’t poo without taking his top off.

Does he like the feeling of cold cistern porcelain against his belly ?

@IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos @Vaxtable yeah I didn't explain that properly did I!

When you're hair is down the surface area is greater than when your hair is up, so more area for germs to land.

But then I don't take my phone into the loo either for the same reason.

Maybe I'm a little germ-phobic 😅

How do you cope with the fact that you have to take your entire body into the loo and therefore all those supposed germs will be all over it and your clothes? Or do you have an entire wash and change every time?

No I'm ok with that that because at night I change into different clothes for bed.

But I don't wash my hair every night so I want to minimise the sense of germ load.

The more I try to explain it the more I realise it's not logical or grounded in actual facts, it's a phobia.

I also change my clothes when I come home from the hospital or GP surgery.

Tbf, I have had an illness for over a year that I'm finally recovering from but has made these behaviours more extreme.

FarmGirl78 · 13/07/2025 11:01

This is hilariously odd. Who on earth thinks "Need a poo, best put a ponytail in"? 🤣🤣

I've had hair past my bum before and I can't even remember what I did, I'm assuming I just swept it over my shoulder.

gamerchick · 13/07/2025 09:30

Even when my hair’s short, I still do it. It’s a non-issue for me anyway.
You know how when you get in after a long day and you just want to get your bra off, makeup off, etc? It’s that same sort of feeling. Just a need to get it up and out the way, but even if ear length, I think I’d still have that same intense urge 😂

LouiseK93 · 13/07/2025 15:50

It's not unusual when eating to avoid food getting in it, it also does my head in having hair in my face.
It is unusual to tie it up for a poo, but its also fine to do it, your allowed to have your little quirks and things.

lilkitten · 13/07/2025 18:48

I guess it's weird, but then I think we're all weird in different ways. I tend to tie mine up for active things, or washing my face, or just if I'm hot.

pestowithwalnuts · 13/07/2025 19:07

Eating or throwing up..yes.. But not pooing. That's odd

The heading in Trending said "To think it’s normal to tie your h…"

I thought the rest was going to be "…usband up".

I'm quite disappointed.

Lol. Quoting just so we can all have another laugh. You're welcome x

This sounds totally mental.

Simplegazette · 14/07/2025 09:57

Have you had a poo yet?

Perhapsanothertime · 14/07/2025 10:13

😂😂😂

This is brilliant! I can absolutely understand you feeling the need to do this from some learned behaviour that you’ve imposed on yourself, but to be confused that it’s not normal is hilarious 🤣

I’ve always had long hair, and as I was an active kid I often needed it to be tied back. To the point I found it a bit odd and uncomfortable to have it down. I trained myself out of that and now it is usually down, and I’ll tie it back if I am doing something active, or where it would dangle in my way, or if I’m out in the wind etc. It’s not necessary for pooing or eating though lol.

Asyouwere09 · 14/07/2025 11:04

Just when I thought I'd heard it all 🤣
But, now, really...if that is your normal than there's nothing wrong with it at all. Do whatever makes you comfortable in these moments. We're all different

Skibbgirl · 14/07/2025 12:35

Curious to understand why you do this when going to the loo ... was it an unfortunate childhood experience that pushed you into behaving this way or was your mother of the same opinion and, if so, what prompted her approach? So many questions, so little time ....!
