To think it's normal to tie your hair back to poo or eat?

Came up in conversation with a friend, we both have just below the shoulder length hair. I tie my hair back/up whenever I go for a poo or eat a meal and she thinks this is really odd, is it? 🤔 I've always done it and thought it was something a lot of people do, especially when eating.

I can't remember ever not doing it when eating but I think being hot is where it comes from, would drive me mad to eat a meal and feel my head being sweaty.

I've definitely seen other women tie their hair up when eating or do housework (again, probably because of sweating).

Doesn't explain the toilet though, it's not because of sweating or not wanting to get poo on my hair!!

Never thought about it before until it came up and didn't think it was that weird but I guess it is from the reactions.

Edited

Housework and gardening I would tie back because it constantly falls in your face every time you bend and the wind sends it everywhere, eating just tucked behind ears, pooing unless it was long enough to get in the toilet I wouldn't even think about. Why is your head hotter with loose hair than with hair tied back, never noticed that.

I wonder, are you neurodivergent? I tie my hair up to drive, eat, sleep. If my hair is down for too long, it gives me this sort of panicky and frustrated feeling. I’ve realised it’s mostly a sensory thing.

Not that I'm aware of but I've been err.. testing having my hair out over the past few days and I really couldn't stand it. I've noticed I do clip it up for so many thing as well, going into a shop, unloading the dishwasher, brushing teeth.

My conclusion is it's a sensory/habit thing and I just don't like hair being in my face when I'm "doing" something.

re sensory things, it occurred to me I am a bit particular when it comes to things touching my skin. I only wear cotton or natural fibres, only wear short sleeves up to my elbow unless they are very loose, I cut the necks off my bed shirts so they don't touch my neck when I'm sleeping. I sound very uptight, I'm honestly not!

Thanks for the hilarious replies, I couldn't find the poster who said I should report back on my undone hair poo experiment.

Nope, not for me, felt awful. I'm sure it a mix of always being sweaty, having dense hair, learnt behaviour from early childhood but I won't be changing it and shall continue to clip up my hair for such occasions.

A few people have asked if I lean forward and yes, I do, because we have a foldable foot stall that I use. I'm 5'2 with very short legs so they dangle like a toddler without it. Also recommend a poop stool for complete evacuations 👌

But you must regularly see women in cafes and restaurants successfully eating without tying their hair up? If you had your hair nicely done for an evening out would you still tie it up to eat?! I assume you aren’t watching women poo but you must have known others weren’t doing this.

I do see women with their hair up all the time in cafes and restaurants! Yes, I would still clip my hair up to eat, even if it was out and blow dried first.

@Croleand do you see them with their hair down also?

Are you trolling? Why would I think every woman ties their hair up to eat? 🤔 I assumed it was a common thing and as you can see from the comments, it's not rare, just not as common as I thought.

I don't think it really matters, just do whatever makes you feel comfortable.

@Crole sorry, you think someone replying to your thread with a reasonable question is a troll?! Really? I don’t think Mumsnet is for you.

If you go out and see women eating, it’s fairly obvious that it’s not particularly common. Not hugely unusual, but it’s certainly not a thing the majority do. That’s what they’re saying. Why would that be trolling?

chocolatemademefat · 17/07/2025 09:49

How much mess do you make in the toilet! 😱

What's the reasonable question, whether I also see people with their hair down when eating? Yes, course I do, I haven't got to 38 believing that everybody ties their hair up to eat. I don't understand the point you're making?

This lighthearted thread is taking a weird turn 🤔

Yes, I regularly see women with all kinds of hairstyles eating in public, some have their hair out, some up. I have friends with long hair who I know for certain also tie their hair up when we're eating together.

No, I've never given it much thought and never checked in a restaurant whether strangers are tying their hair up explicitly to eat. That's why I was surprised when my one friend said its weird to put your hair up to do things in general.

Perhapsanothertime · 17/07/2025 14:23

Many of the people eating with their hair up already had it up that day - they didn’t necessarily pull it up just to eat. That’s an important factor when assessing how normal this particular habit is, as the hair up ladies may not actually be conforming to your “norm” at all.

I find it bizarre that you think someone asking you a perfectly reasonable question about what you’ve observed isn’t ‘lighthearted’.

You started a thread about something where the answer is fairly evident from just looking at people.

Their point is clear. And perfectly reasonable. Why are you being so defensive about it?

JRM17 · 18/07/2025 09:26

Erm... I think you may need some professional help.

Butchyrestingface · 18/07/2025 09:37

I’m confused about why anyone would even bother with long hair if they spend all their time unnecessarily tying it up for mundane, everyday tasks and then taking it down again only to repeat the process 5 minutes later.

Can’t be good for the hair and sounds like a complete bawache. Get a buzz cut.

JMSA · 18/07/2025 09:42

I always tie it back for cooking.

lovemeblender · 18/07/2025 10:03

I'm not neuro divergent, but have shortish hair as I don't like the feeling of hair loose around my face and neck. It gives me the ick when women ,(,or men) have long hair that is always loose and it's constantly getting in the way. This happens in work, and I really, really wish they'd tie it back!

PissedOff2020 · 18/07/2025 18:15

To poo?! Why?And why only when you poo, what about a wee?!

ImNotARegularMumImACoolMum · 18/07/2025 18:29

I do this every time!! After 30 years I’ve been diagnosed as autistic so I assume it’s a sensory thing!

hannonle · 18/07/2025 19:35

Maybe it started in the evening when you'd tie your hair up ready to brush teeth/wash face but also use the loo?

If your hair is too short to tie up, then you should be fine tucking it behind your ears for eating time.
