To think it's normal to tie your hair back to poo or eat?

Came up in conversation with a friend, we both have just below the shoulder length hair. I tie my hair back/up whenever I go for a poo or eat a meal and she thinks this is really odd, is it? 🤔 I've always done it and thought it was something a lot of people do, especially when eating.

My <jaw length> hair is permanently in a clip in this hot weather as it's hot & also irritates me when the fan blows in my direction, blowing it over my <sweaty> face & it gets stuck.

When I was <much> younger I had waist length hair. I would tie it back when I ate, but generally I had it in a plait or otherwise tied up - rarely let it just hang down my back as It would soon get to look ragged if I didn't frequently brush it.

I would always tie it back for sex & still do as it just gets in the way - possibly TMI. LOL!

I can't imagine why tie it up for a poo unless as PP said, it's below the waist & in danger of getting poo on it. If that was the case, I'd have it cut shorter.

I tie my hair up for lots of things because its distracting and annoying like wearing high heels (which I no longer do) but it stops me thinking clearly.
I always shout at the tv when girls arevtruing to escape a murders dungeon and dont tie their hair up.

I shout at the telly when anyone cooks with their hair not tied up

The heading in Trending said "To think it’s normal to tie your h…"

I thought the rest was going to be "…usband up".

I'm quite disappointed.

I was ready for a very different thread!

Piamia7 · 11/07/2025 14:51

I pretty much always have my hair up at home, down outside. But I don't do it for certain occasions like you've described

Lioncub2020 · 11/07/2025 14:51

Yeap because whenever you go to a restaurant all you only ever see women with pony tails? I think you might be pooing incorrectly.

SP2024 · 11/07/2025 14:59

For cooking, yes often. For pooing or eating? No!

vickylou78 · 11/07/2025 15:01

Nope .... Wear my hair down most of time and don't tie it up to eat or poo!

Trumptonagain · 11/07/2025 15:03

I have long hair, never tie it back when I have a poo though.

Always tie it back first thing in the morning purely because I prefer it kept out of my way when working or the weather is really hot.

Wouldn't cut it short either, for me there are times when I go out and like wearing my hair down/long. Best of both worlds.

housemaus · 11/07/2025 15:08

I can't concentrate on pretty much anything if I've got my hair down so I'm with you. If I'm finding it hard to get something done at work or I'm driving or I'm sorting out paperwork... the hair goes up.

TwerkAndJerk · 11/07/2025 15:10

I always tie my hair back to cook.

I also have the same issues pp have mentioned that if I really need to be productive at home, I must tie my hair up or I just cannot get in the right frame of mind. Doesn't apply at work though.

HornungTheHelpful · 11/07/2025 15:11

Screamingabdabz · 11/07/2025 12:48

I don’t tie my hair back for those ‘occasions’. I l always wonder at women who have longer hair and tie it back all the time. Just cut it short!

This is me. Fuck off, frankly, it’s my hair and I’ll do what I want 🤣.

But seriously, I would love short hair but mine is very unruly and requires a lot of input when shorter. Length sort of weighs it down. But I don’t like it in my face. That’s why. But it’s none of your business really

HelenHywater · 11/07/2025 15:14

Yes you're strange. I always tie mine up for exercising. Otherwise it's just when it's irritating me (like today when I'm hot and don't want it on my neck). Certainly doesn't relate to cooking, pooing or any other activity (apart from exercise).

fount · 11/07/2025 15:15

Personally, yes, I prefer to pull my hair back in an elastic. I don't like it falling in my face at either of those times, or when I'm exercising, cleaning the house, or gardening. It's possible to leave it down, though, and it's not something I'd normally talk about. (Yet here I am sharing it on MN, so...) Obviously most women with long hair don't pull it back when they eat, as you can see by people-watching at restaurants, and usually I won't, either, if I'm out at a restaurant or having a meal at someone's home. Neither way is weird.

The poo thing sounds like those who have to get fully undressed to have one… WEIRD.

My friend’s daughter does this…always has done since being quite young. She’s now 27 and married, and still strips off! Weird 😬

I have long hair and it's almost always back. But short it just goes mental, there's no controlling it unless I went for full on skin head. I also prefer how I look with longer hair. But it makes me warm and I don't love the feeling on the back of my neck or having to shove it out of my face to see. It doesn't stay in styles well, it just does what it wants without so much product that I'd damage it if I did it daily.

I have it down or styled for things I want it down for, but most people won't see me like that because for work and "every day" I tie it out of the way.

You may not understand it, but we do. Leave us be.

OatcakeCravings · 11/07/2025 13:39

I can only poop naked! So the hair thing doesn’t seem odd to me at all

But why can you only poop naked? That's very odd.

CanINapNow · 11/07/2025 15:17

I can’t stand in tv shows when women are in labour with their hair all sweaty and stuck to their face! I’m yelling “get that woman a scrunchie!”

HurdyGurdy19 · 11/07/2025 15:19

There is an unnatural obsession with poo on the forum all of a sudden.

So many threads involving it recently.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 11/07/2025 15:20

Never tied my hair up to go to toilet but if I am wearing a jumpsuit or dungarees I always face the toilet to undo them incase they go down the pan.

Do you tie it up to pee?

KarmenPQZ · 11/07/2025 15:21

I don’t think it’s about the hair getting in the way when you’re wiping. I think it’s more that between wiping and washing you hands you it might get in your face and you might tuck it behind your ear or flip it over your shoulders and it’s just bad hygiene to touch things especially near your face especially in that time.

I don’t have a hard or fast rule but I think I would generally tie my hair back for these. Certainly if I’m on my period and messing with a moon cup I would.

housemaus · 11/07/2025 15:21

My hair looks shit short; I can't tie it back when it's short so then it actually annoys me more (I've tried - the only way it wouldn't piss me off would be a pixie cut which would make me look horrendous); I've got nice hair and like it when it's down - just not for anything I need to concentrate on!

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 11/07/2025 15:22

AngelicKaty · 11/07/2025 13:26

@Crole YABU OP. I don't do this and I don't know anyone else who does. If you don't like your hair near your face when you're eating you could just keep it back with a hairband. The loo thing I don't get at all - I'm not sure you do either! 😂

How is adding a hairband different to adding a scrunchie?

NotSorry · 11/07/2025 15:22

cooking and sport are the only times I need to tie my hair back. I always find it weird when women are running around a sports court with long hair flowing and not tied back. Your two reasons, no

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 11/07/2025 15:26

321user123 · 11/07/2025 14:21

Sorry OP but that IS really odd!
I’ve got hair that reaches my belly button, albeit quite fine and have done so my whole life - minus a massive chop at 18 - but never did I tie my hair specifically to eat or poop 😆.

Try that length but thick, a bit wiry and very curly with the ability to just move itself at will.

Hard to eat with it down! Mine usually ends up back when I'm eating even if I've started with it down.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 11/07/2025 15:27

@OatcakeCravings

Do you ever poo at work? Do you seriously go into the cubicle and take off all your clothes
