To think it's normal to tie your hair back to poo or eat?

Came up in conversation with a friend, we both have just below the shoulder length hair. I tie my hair back/up whenever I go for a poo or eat a meal and she thinks this is really odd, is it? 🤔 I've always done it and thought it was something a lot of people do, especially when eating.

I don’t tie my hair back for those ‘occasions’. I l always wonder at women who have longer hair and tie it back all the time. Just cut it short!

I wonder this too with women who wear their hair scraped back 100% of the time which isn't generally a flattering style.

HRTQueen · 11/07/2025 13:29

I tend to tie my hair back when doing something so that will include those two activities

I have a lot of hair and it’s get in the way (it’s bouncy) and it’s like wearing a woolly hat in this weather

Love having a poo. Generally do full face of makeup and glamorous up-do just to make it an occasion

Well, doesn’t everyone?

Hard stare at those who poo without full foundation and a glossy chignon.

honeylulu · 11/07/2025 13:30

No, I don't!

I'll tie my hair back if it's likely to get in the way (exercise, having a bath and sometimes when reviewing documents as my head is angled down and the hair swings forward).

Eating, no because my head is held up. Only exception would be if eating outside on a breezy day and it kept blowing into my mouth.

Pooing, no. Just why?

summertimeinLondon · 11/07/2025 13:30

I have to tie my hair back when I’m driving. Just don’t like the feeling of it loose in case it gets in my vision, I guess!

I can eat and poo with it down just fine though. 😆

Wouldn't suit my face, too round. It's shorter now but still needs go be clipped back for eating or toilet trips.

Well, eating, yes. But not toilet trips, I think we’ve established that unless your hair is very long it doesn’t need to be tied up to poo or wee!

MsFelicityLemon · 11/07/2025 13:33

Yes it's standard practice before entering the room with a toilet to tie hair up.and then fully undress and leave your clothes in a neat pile to the (outside) left of the door. Really should be done for wee also,.

Exceptions (for wees only) can be made when on transport such aeroplanes or trains. I forget why.

slapmyarseandcallmemary · 11/07/2025 13:33

Odd

Walker1178 · 11/07/2025 13:36

To poo?!? No, what would be the reason/benefit? I have quite long hair, I’ll tie it up when cooking so it’s normally still up for eating but that’s to stop it getting in my food.

OatcakeCravings · 11/07/2025 13:39

I can only poop naked! So the hair thing doesn’t seem odd to me at all

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/07/2025 13:40

Have you got knee length hair, OP?

HoppingPavlova · 11/07/2025 13:40

Don't think it's about getting poo in my hair, I've been trying to work it out now I've realised it's not normal. I will try to do it with my hair out next time and see what feelings it evokes

Do let us know 🤣.

Im trying to work out what feelings, tying back shoulder length hair to do a poo, would evoke and how not tying it back would evoke different ones, so I am riveted with this experiment😁.

So do you take your hair off before doing poo?

PreciousMomentsHun · 11/07/2025 13:41

Wow another fake poo thread

Did you have very long hair as a child? Perhaps it’s a weird habit you got into then.

I did, it was past my bum and I hated it being touched, washed, brushed. I do have a very specific phobia about flying insects getting caught in my hair as well so maybe it's protection to not get a bee in my hair when I'm in a vulnerable state 😂 Hoping someone will come along and explain why they do it but it looks like it is quite a weird thing to do 😟

tealandteal · 11/07/2025 13:45

Really confused about why it is specifically for pooing that you need to tie it up and not all toilet activities?! My hair has been much longer than described and I tie it up for exercising and maybe housework. If it was particularly windy I might tie it up to eat but it would probably get tied up anyway if it was that windy.

gamerchick · 11/07/2025 13:45

I don't really talk about taking a shit with my mates. So it hasn't come up.

Why can't we have a week without a toilet thread though

Yeah, maybe it's the "doing something" or concentrating as someone said before. Sorting out a box, working, cooking 🤔

My parents and grandparents always made my siblings and I tie up our hair before eating. Subsequently as an adult I can't shake this habit! Although I dont tie it up to use the toilet.

singswithitsfingers · 11/07/2025 13:50

You say your hair was very long - past your bum - as a child. Presumably that explains why you tie it up for toileting.

Tootiredforthis23 · 11/07/2025 13:51

Workingonthehighway · 11/07/2025 13:02

I tie my hair up for lots of things because its distracting and annoying like wearing high heels (which I no longer do) but it stops me thinking clearly.
I always shout at the tv when girls arevtruing to escape a murders dungeon and dont tie their hair up.

I remember reading tips for women running alone not long ago and it recommended not tying your hair up in a ponytail/bun because it gives an attacker an easy point to grip onto and give them control. Ridiculous that women have to consider that at all but I’m guessing it would also apply to escaping a murderers basement.

BunnyLake · 11/07/2025 13:53

I do when I’m cooking. Otherwise no.

Madformaltesers · 11/07/2025 13:54

Cooking yes…pooing why? It doesnt drape in the toilet

Yeah, it's probably as simple as a learnt behaviour that I've never questioned and that's why it would feel weird to not do it now after 35 years.
