Is Pride exempt from public indecency rules?

DD (aged 14) went into London today with a friend she is staying with. I can only assume friend’s parents didn’t realise it was pride weekend and we don’t live anywhere near London so had no idea.

Aside from the fact that it was a complete ballache getting back out because tube stations were closed, DD said she was shocked at some of the things she saw in terms of arses on display with men just wearing “thongs”.

How is it OK to have such sexualised stuff going on in view of young kids?

Which "public indecency rules" forbid the wearing of thongs in public?

selkieselkie · 05/07/2025 20:40

I'm assuming there was more to it than just skimpy clothing, OP? Even full public nudity isn't necessarily a crime. There's an annual naked bike ride that runs through my city, for example. What was the "sexualised stuff" your daughter was shocked by?

UsingAMansNameInAWomensWorld · 05/07/2025 20:41

Arses aren't inherently sexual

kierenthecommunity · 05/07/2025 20:43

Presuming they didn’t actively have their cocks out, I think they’re breaking no laws 😃

PolyVagalNerve · 05/07/2025 20:47

I think the BDSM stuff at pride borders / is ?
porn in public, legitimised for pride ???

but then I don’t like drag - grotesque woman appropriation is not my vibe

Candlemidnight · 05/07/2025 20:48

I wouldn't let a child/young teenager go to pride. It is an adult event

an adult event in a non- adult venue / time

you are completely right Op and the people on this thread thinking it is ok for men to act out their fetish and show their cock to young kids is just madness.

If you can see your DH’s cock when he’s wearing a thong, he’s got it on backwards. HTH.

I wouldn't think that was ok. But that's not what was described in the OP...

This is my issue. Yes it’s an adult event but they were in Oxford Street - having gone in totally unaware. I am assuming they were not the only tourists unaware it was going on.

Were the thongs any more revealing than a woman wearing a skimpy bikini bottom?

I do agree that you see some overly fetish related stuff at Pride that has nothing to do with same-sex attraction, but what you're describing above sounds fine - you'd see that at lots of beaches (although perhaps not British beaches..)

Two years ago I went to see Pulp during Pride weekend.

On the tube back to catch my connecting train was a man in a nappy and a bra holding a trans flag.

It’s been co-opted by people who like to bring their whole selves to work…as it were. When I was a kid, people like the guy I was unfortunate to bump into were called flashers and arrested.

Yes I think this is my point. Had I realised it was pride I would have suggested they didn’t go into central London so my fault I guess. But yes, why is it acceptable now?

I’ve been to pride and it only gets a bit raunchy in Soho after dark. Men do wear skimpy clothes but it’s the same as being on a beach? Isn’t it like male swimwear?

We literally saw a completely nude old man in Spain standing in the sea. No one wanted to see his old cock. No one is naked at pride on Oxford st swinging their cock about

I question the parenting of anyone who doesn’t check events in London before sending a 14yo into London. It could have been protests on, train strikes, an aggy football match, a big concert, Notting Hill carnival (which can be far more dangerous than pride)

Does having a piece of string tied round a penis count as being covered or being out out? If it counts as being out out, then I believe laws are indeed being broken.

Yes - see above - I have admitted it was my fault. But thank you for questioning my parenting - much appreciated.

OP’s daughter saw bum cheeks. She did not see any string penis. I’ve been to pride and spent all night in Soho gay bars many times and I’ve not seen men with just penis strings on. I have seen men wearing a neon string vest and skimpy pants but it did not offend me

Which laws? Public nudity isn't a crime in England as far as I'm aware.

What is the point in even trying to stop men from getting their cocks out these days anyway? May as well just let them get on with it.

SunnyBlueSeal · 05/07/2025 21:08

My DD15 and her friend ( and her mum ) went shopping in London today. We were all unaware of London pride. They did go and see it and took some photos with drag queens. They were there for about an hour before heading to the shops. None of them complained and they had fun.

Well that's not an outfit I'd be thrilled to see but if he was wearing a nappy then he wasn't flashing. Actual flashers still get arrested.

To be fair to what I said, your daughter could have walked out of Oxford st to far worse if some serious protest was going on, which it does from time to time in cities. I tend to not go on any big London match days either as can be intimidating with drunk football hooligans
