Is Pride exempt from public indecency rules?

DD (aged 14) went into London today with a friend she is staying with. I can only assume friend’s parents didn’t realise it was pride weekend and we don’t live anywhere near London so had no idea.

Aside from the fact that it was a complete ballache getting back out because tube stations were closed, DD said she was shocked at some of the things she saw in terms of arses on display with men just wearing “thongs”.

How is it OK to have such sexualised stuff going on in view of young kids?

Arses aren't inherently sexual

So much drivel it's unreal

Well that's not an outfit I'd be thrilled to see but if he was wearing a nappy then he wasn't flashing. Actual flashers still get arrested.

Well yes not technically flashing. But intimidating women in public late at night by making them bystanders (participants?) in his frankly grim fetish 🤢 (see also: the Somerset gimp)

Two years ago I went to see Pulp during Pride weekend.

On the tube back to catch my connecting train was a man in a nappy and a bra holding a trans flag.

It’s been co-opted by people who like to bring their whole selves to work…as it were. When I was a kid, people like the guy I was unfortunate to bump into were called flashers and arrested.

And I'd bet good money that man was hetrosexual - and just using pride as a way of exposing his fetish to the world.

Libre2 · 05/07/2025 21:16

Ok it’s not public indecency on the police website it is called “outraging public decency” and is described as doing something lewd, obscene or disgusting in the presence of at least two members of the public.

OK wearing a thong is not that I agree but having seen some of the footage, I would argue there is some definite outraging of public decency going on.

I agree op I have wondered this too, especially the fetish stuff

You didn't say anything about him being intimidating. If he was trying to cause alarm or distress to others (as the Somerset gimp did) then it crosses a line and becomes potentially criminal. That's a completely different scenario to him just minding his own business on the tube.

He wasn’t minding his own business, he was trying to make eye contact with women. Also, he was dressed as an adult baby.

thenightsky · 05/07/2025 21:23

I thought Pride month was June.

OneAmberFinch · 05/07/2025 21:23

It's the men dressed up as Japanese schoolgirls that get me, more than the skimpily dressed ones... It's not the same as wearing a bikini to the beach, it's forcing the public to participate in (multiple levels of) your fetish.

TheWisePlumDuck · 05/07/2025 21:27

It's definitely a place for adult fetishes to be displayed and should have an adult venue/time. It certainly has very little to do with LGB these days and is mainly for 'queer' straight or gender woo people now.

My brother and his husband took their young dc once to one of the larger events after the adoption was finalised. They left immediately and vowed never to return. As my brother put it 'Full of pedos and freaks, just straight men acting out stereotypes we've been trying to get away from for decades'.

When someone says 'bring their whole self to' anywhere, what they actually mean is 'My cock. I'm bringing my cock'.

Hallehills · 05/07/2025 21:28

TaggieO · 05/07/2025 20:57

If you can see your DH’s cock when he’s wearing a thong, he’s got it on backwards. HTH.

I am CACKLING 😂

kierenthecommunity · 05/07/2025 20:43

Presuming they didn’t actively have their cocks out, I think they’re breaking no laws 😃

Edited

'Actively' 😂

All joking aside, I have been to many Prides and yes you do see some sights. I've seen fellas in bare ass chaps and very little else, broad daylight, if one was minded to look a good inch of the top of the (erm) gentleman's area being clearly visible due to the 'waistband' (such as it was) of the clothing item being so VERY low cut at the front and nothing at all at the back. While I would be horrified to think any young teenage DC of mine would express homophobia (disclaimer, I have many, many very close, very gay friends), I wouldn't want them to see that...

Ilikemymenlikeilikemycoffee · 05/07/2025 21:31

I’m sure I’ll be flamed but lots of it is about attention seeking IMO. I’ve never understood pride and hate all the drag queen stuff. I know some people do and everyone has a right to be who they want to be, it’s just not a bit of me!

Jennps · 05/07/2025 21:33

People acting out their fetishes in public, especially in front of children have only one motive. Whataboutery doesn’t change that.

“Actual flashers still get arrested.”

Not if they say they’re a woman and do it in a female changing room. When that happens, the women who complain get moved/told to change elsewhere/accused of being bigoted.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/07/2025 21:37

DD and I were in London today ( Oxford street/Regent Street ) it was very well publicised that Pride was going on.

Apart from the number of people dressed up , many of the shops had rainbow banners ( or in the case of Next ) changed the colour of the letters.
Lots of the flags .

Many of the roads were closed off.

We didn't go for Pride and didn't stay long . Travel was ok, it was earlier in the day (before 2pm)
Didn't see any bums but then I wasn't looking TBH .
I wouldn't have chosen that day to visit if I had a choice but it was nice to see London so busy ,

Hallehills · 05/07/2025 21:39

Libre2 · 05/07/2025 20:58

This is my issue. Yes it’s an adult event but they were in Oxford Street - having gone in totally unaware. I am assuming they were not the only tourists unaware it was going on.

Well it's London, and there's stuff going on all the time. She could have easily run into a big demonstration, a festival, a convention or anything else, especially on Oxford Street, so yeah, you might want to double-check in future! Soho is literally just around the corner. This was a planned event which is NOT designed for kids, and if you are easily shocked by some of the things that happen in one of the most diverse, open and exciting cities in the world, well... 👀

I'm not sure how open and aware your DD is but it could be a fab chance to talk about Pride together and maybe discuss some of its history and why it's so important to so many in the community?

Also, girls have their bums out in thongs all the time. I've currently got Love Island on the box and honestly, never seen so many shiny cheeks 😄

quietlysad · 05/07/2025 21:39

It’s not just ‘having their arses’ out they are wearing fetish gear and it is highly sexualised. I for one don’t think it’s okay in public and in front of children. It’s sad times we live in when no one seems to care about children any more.

StrongandNorthern · 05/07/2025 21:39

London eh?

Fair point.

Pride generally actively promotes itself as being ‘family friendly’.

LBFseBrom · 05/07/2025 21:43

Pride has been taken over in recent years by some seriously weird groups and I don't like that. However I expect there was more to your daughter's London visit than the Pride parade and she'll get over it so don't worry too much.

Maybe they found it a bit big city exciting, besides there's always the lego store or the mnm store to visit if pride offends
