Just painted my front door bright yellow and I hate it 😭

Help! I had a moment of madness and decided to paint my front door bright yellow. It was a steely blue/grey before which was fine but I wanted something cheerful. It looks bloody awful and 3 coats in and I can still see the blue through it.

Recently separated so wanted something cheerful and happy in my new house. I hate it! 😱

Aaaw I bet it looks lovely. I love yellow front doors, it just needs some more coats. Going from a darker colour it's going to look shit until the final coat. I recently painted my garage door, hated it, it looked shit whilst I was doing it until that final coat. It may need another couple of coats and then you'll feel better about it.

Ablondiebutagoody · 02/07/2025 13:36

Finish it, give it a few weeks, change it if you still hate it.

Away2000 · 02/07/2025 13:37

Finish the last coats, then give it a couple of days to get used to it. If you still hate it then change it - maybe a different shade of yellow would work?

heldinadream · 02/07/2025 13:48

Post a pic? I bet it's lovely, just needs another coat?

RainbowLlamas · 02/07/2025 13:50

I’ve just done another coat and it’s improving a bit. I think with the blue underneath the yellow was turning a dirty colour which looked awful. Needs sooo many coats of paint to fully cover it!

F&B only have 4 yellow front doors on their web site. It’s clearly not a popular choice. I think the door and house need to be perfect. I’m not convinced about 3 of these. I think the white cottage looks great. The others, not so much and are helped along by planting and being good doors. Maybe a more muted yellow would be good?

I like it. Perhaps looks off in person but looks fine to me in the pic x

Davros · 02/07/2025 13:58

I think it looks good and I thought I would hate it. Keep going!

FloofyBird · 02/07/2025 13:58

I bet it will look fab when it's done. Stick some more coats on. Was the blue dark?

It wasn’t a dark blue but it’s still showing through in parts. It think it might be growing on me - phew!

I think the only issue is that there’s the tiniest tinge of blue showing through which is making the yellow look a bit acidic. I’m sure another coat is probably the last thing you want to think about but I think it will look great if you can completely cover the blue.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 02/07/2025 14:03

I think it's lovely!!!

Qashgal · 02/07/2025 14:03

It looks nice ,bright and cheerful. I bet it will be welcoming on a dark winters day.

But I can't go without suggesting you shorten or remove the string holding the pretty wreath so that it lies within the height of the window.Sorry ( not sorry 😊)

RossGellersCat · 02/07/2025 14:04

I vote another coat of yellow and buy yourself a wreath to hang on it (I find a wreath makes all the difference) and maybe then see if you still hate it?

Landofthesummerpeople · 02/07/2025 14:04

I love it!

I think it looks really good!

RossGellersCat · 02/07/2025 14:06

Sorry, just seen your posted pic that wasn't visible when I had my phone open! I think it looks lush OP, agree with others re bringing the height of the wreath up a bit?
I wonder if the door represents a big change amidst the other big change of being separated and it's going to take a while to adjust to the door (even though it's the colour you want?) x

AbzMoz · 02/07/2025 14:07

It’s looking gorgeous! I love the wreath too - so so pretty (but agree the string needs to be shortened a smidge)!

magpie234 · 02/07/2025 14:07

Not being unreasonable. I think what you’re not liking is the cool tone of the yellow, which is the paint itself. You could try a warmer yellow, which would have more red in it? That’s what gives yellow it’s more cheerful buttercup vibe. There is one on Amazon called Rust-Oleum Universal Gloss Canary Yellow which looks a good example of what I mean.

BMW6 · 02/07/2025 14:08

Keep going OP, it's going to look FABULOUS!

DoubleTimeStep · 02/07/2025 14:08

I love it 😊
The mood to paint it struck you for a reason, and life is too short to deny a little bit of bright and colourful joy. I get it, it's a big change and it will take a little while to get used to. I reckon you should finish the job, and then live with it for a few weeks.... If by then it makes you smile when you arrive home which I think it might then it's an excellent job done. If you are still grimacing at it a bit, then change it, it's only paint.

dandelion246 · 02/07/2025 14:08
