Just painted my front door bright yellow and I hate it 😭

Help! I had a moment of madness and decided to paint my front door bright yellow. It was a steely blue/grey before which was fine but I wanted something cheerful. It looks bloody awful and 3 coats in and I can still see the blue through it.

Recently separated so wanted something cheerful and happy in my new house. I hate it! 😱

@RainbowLlamas It’s just too vivid. It’s almost luminous. I’d go for toned down softer yellow.

MyCoralHedgehog · 02/07/2025 14:51

Looks great

catin8oot5 · 02/07/2025 14:51

What’s the door made of? Is it wood or PVC

F&B only have 4 yellow front doors on their web site. It’s clearly not a popular choice. I think the door and house need to be perfect. I’m not convinced about 3 of these. I think the white cottage looks great. The others, not so much and are helped along by planting and being good doors. Maybe a more muted yellow would be good?

Loads of yellow doors around me and many of them in the brighter tones.

Sorry, just seen your posted pic that wasn't visible when I had my phone open! I think it looks lush OP, agree with others re bringing the height of the wreath up a bit?
I wonder if the door represents a big change amidst the other big change of being separated and it's going to take a while to adjust to the door (even though it's the colour you want?) x

🤣🤣I could see all the photos & wondered WTAF you were on about! 🤣🤣

@RainbowLlamas I really don't like yellow (doors/walls/much of anything!) but I was planning on keeping neutral regarding the actual colour. But actually I think it looks good.

im glad it's growing on you! I think you'll love it once you (🤬) do another coat or two to completely stop the blue showing through!

(and fix the wreath 😉 )

AprilShowers25 · 02/07/2025 14:54

Also I would add a really bright pink flower into the wreath

neverbeenskiing · 02/07/2025 14:54

I like it, OP! It needs another coat but I think it will look lovely when it's finished. Perhaps you could get a couple of nice yellow plants to go either side of the door? Or a hanging basket with yellow flowers.

Next time you paint a lighter colour over dark, use a really good primer to get rid of the darker colour first, which would the. Reduce the number of coats needed.

Irritatediron · 02/07/2025 14:55

You can see the blue because you didn't prime the door. The paint looks chunky in some areas too. In future it takes about 5 mins to google proper paint prep to get the best looking results. It can be tided up and fixed really easily though it's not a lost cause !! I like the shade x

I think you’re meant to do a white coat of something first that acts as a barrier for the old paint colour showing through (unless scratches), similar to a primer.

Then you would only need a few coats of the new colour.

i think you may end up buying more paint to get the full coverage.

I see so many drab grey doors so yours will make a nice change.

Someone got there before me!

PreetyinPurple · 02/07/2025 14:56

Actually I think it’s grey thats the best inbetween colour to create a barrier when changing from one to another.

RubyWinehouse · 02/07/2025 14:57

I like it, it looks cheery, love the floral arrangement too.

Cheeseplantandcrackers · 02/07/2025 14:59

It’s pretty.

TheMimsy · 02/07/2025 15:00

I love it. Can I ask what paint you used @RainbowLlamas? I want to do. I want to do my patio doors at the back in that colour and the door arch in the house to help it flow inwards.

heldinadream · 02/07/2025 15:06

It's fab @RainbowLlamas and so is yours @OnyourbarksGSG and you are both spreading colour and joy in the world. 💛💜

Bergamotte · 02/07/2025 15:10

That is a lovely shade, RainbowLlamas. Your door looks great - I'm sure it is just the dark paint showing through that is making you doubt your decision.

The white cottage is the only one I rather dislike... Funny how tastes and preferences differ.

I like OP's door. It does have a bit of a lemon-ish tint to it. Probably due to the blue underneath. This will look nice once it's done! (IMO)

This, when going from dark to light.
OP it's a bit late for you, yellow can be one of those colours that doesn't cover very well, but an extra coat (or two) will improve it no end.
I love it and it's made me feel nostalgic. I painted the door of my previous house yellow. It cheered me up every time I saw it, and made it easy to give directions to first time visitors!

Mansionscoldandgrey · 02/07/2025 15:15

I love it! My front door is pillar box red as I wanted it to be more cheerful than all the boring front doors that look like they've been painted with undercoat 🥱

TizerorFizz · 02/07/2025 15:17

@Lafufu It’s a great door but I’m not sure it would not look better in another colour. It’s also more muted than the OPs door which is far too much “in your face” bright. This is why people like F&B. Colours are just classier. Very few awful colours.

cardibach · 02/07/2025 15:23

That’s a bit judgemental @TizerorFizz
Farrow and Ball have a lot of awfully dull colours. Easy to not offend with dull.
OP’s yellow is lovely and cheery and not ‘ in your face’ at all.

CautiousLurker01 · 02/07/2025 15:24

From your original post I was expecting it to look awful, especially as I’m not fond of yellow - but I think this looks great, especially with the wreath garland. I think it’s a happy colour and gives the sense of a warm, welcoming home.

I’d persevere with another coat if you need to but you can always sand it down and repaint in a few months if it doesn’t grow on you.

NojitoandLime · 02/07/2025 15:25

You need to put an opaque white or a primer to cover the blue, then the yellow on top of that.

cardibach · 02/07/2025 15:27

How do you all feel about this locally famous cottage, with or without yellow door? A bit of colour is fab. This shows commitment to the cause.
