Just painted my front door bright yellow and I hate it 😭

Help! I had a moment of madness and decided to paint my front door bright yellow. It was a steely blue/grey before which was fine but I wanted something cheerful. It looks bloody awful and 3 coats in and I can still see the blue through it.

Recently separated so wanted something cheerful and happy in my new house. I hate it! 😱

Oooh, that's not working very well with the pale brick, is it? Trying to think what would look better and I think a shade of blue or green (an olive or sage green, perhaps?) might work better.

Not finished but this is what it looks like so far!

It’s going to look fabulous when finished

Iwantmyoldnameback · 02/07/2025 16:42

I love it but I always enjoy people showing originality and not being snobby about paint brands.
It reminds me of my childhood lots of yellow front doors in the suburbs back then.

AInightingale · 02/07/2025 17:04

Blue is a hellish colour to paint over. My son's walls were deep blue when we moved to our house. It's a tiny room so I painted it white, I think I needed four bloody coats. You need to keep going OP!

ukathleticscoach · 02/07/2025 17:13

How long did you leave to dry between coats?

Too soon and will not cover as well

Looks great to me and was not expecting to like yellow

Fanxjanx · 02/07/2025 17:14

I love it!

ilexgranita · 02/07/2025 17:15

Someone in my road has a bright yellow door with black hardware - it looks fabulous

Looks lovely! It will really brighten up your neighbourhood, it's so rare to see yellow front doors and that shade is so much nicer than the mustard I have seen. Probably just needed more coats of paint.

TizerorFizz · 02/07/2025 17:24

@IwantmyoldnamebackPaint brands matter because quality matters. Undercoat matters. It’s not snobby to say some products are better than others. It’s like saying a Fiat Panda is as good as a Ferrari.

RainbowLlamas · 02/07/2025 17:27

This is the brand of paint for anyone wondering 😀

I don't like the shade, it's very acid, verging on lime, which doesn't go with the colour of the brickwork.

I also think doors look better with the architrave painted the same colour as the door

Never paint over dark colours with light without using an appropriate base coat/ primer/undercoat.

I'd lose the tacky plastic fake flower wreath too.

TickingKey46 · 02/07/2025 17:37

I love it!. Wait till it's dry do a couple layers of white then apply the yellow. When it's not patchy, you're like it so much more.

Bringbackspring · 02/07/2025 17:38

It looks nice, very cheerful.

I do see what you mean about the blue coming through. Did you prime it first?

If you still hate it in a few weeks you can always sand it off and start again. Good thing about paint is it can always be changed.

dontforgetme · 02/07/2025 17:39

I bloody love it!!

neverbeenskiing · 02/07/2025 17:44

I agree with pp that swapping your silver door handle and letterbox for gold would make it look a lot nicer.

ClaireEclair · 02/07/2025 17:46

I love a yellow front door. They always make me smile when I walk past. Yours looks beautiful too! Good job. I would have made a right mess! 😍

MaloryJones · 02/07/2025 17:54

Awww it's lovely OP , especially with the Summer wreath (I assume) on the door as well

NeedyOpalSquid · 02/07/2025 17:55

Yellow is very hard. Paint white first.

southerngirl10 · 02/07/2025 18:05

Wait for it to dry and paint over it?

cannynotsay · 02/07/2025 18:10

Love it

I think it's a fabulous colour - looks very like the colour of my stand alone kitchen cabinet (off white kitchen with wooden surfaces) and it's a fabulous pop of colour, it makes me very happy every time I look at it.

I would love it as a front door!

Well done you.

NortieTortie · 02/07/2025 18:17

Looks great op 🙂

abracadabra1980 · 02/07/2025 18:28

Sorry OP, I’m not keen - it’s just too bright for me.

AngelinaFibres · 02/07/2025 18:55

RainbowLlamas · 02/07/2025 13:50

I’ve just done another coat and it’s improving a bit. I think with the blue underneath the yellow was turning a dirty colour which looked awful. Needs sooo many coats of paint to fully cover it!

Too late now but a white primer/ colour blocking coat before you added the yellow would have prevented the blue showing through.

beadystar · 02/07/2025 19:01

I think it looks great! If this happens again, you just need to neutralise the original colour before painting over. So a primer or something opposite on the colour wheel.
