Just painted my front door bright yellow and I hate it 😭

Help! I had a moment of madness and decided to paint my front door bright yellow. It was a steely blue/grey before which was fine but I wanted something cheerful. It looks bloody awful and 3 coats in and I can still see the blue through it.

Recently separated so wanted something cheerful and happy in my new house. I hate it! 😱

Its really cheery , i like it .
Can you say what make of paint it is please as i want to paint my upvc door too, thanks .

I think the photos make it look as if the yellow itself is slightly on the acidic/lime side, which is of course quite trendy - in other words, that bluey tone you are seeing looks from the photos to be the paint shade not the showing through? The photo someone has shared above is more the creamy, buttery shade of yellow. Only you can say which you prefer!

@cardibach It’s absolutely awful. Thank God not where I live.

Actually I think it’s grey thats the best inbetween colour to create a barrier when changing from one to another.

What works best will vary depending on the paint you are using and what you're trying to cover.

The yellow paint OP is using is quite translucent by the looks of it, so grey underneath would still dull it a little. White underneath is the best option if you want the yellow to be as true as possible to its intended colour.

With more muted/ duller/ darker tones, yes perhaps a neutral midtone such as a grey would work, depending on the opacity/brightness/saturation of the paint you're using.

Mr Happy in the original Mr Men books had a yellow door. I think it looks great !

Payingforthenews · 02/07/2025 15:36

I like it!

BeansBeforeBedtime · 02/07/2025 15:36

There is a house near us with a bright yellow front door. They have some long-stemmed yellow flowers in the front border which makes it all look very put together. Could you soften it with some pots and plants? Yellow in these would draw the eye to the whole picture. I love it!

LBFseBrom · 02/07/2025 15:38

Paint it out, easily done.

Falifornia · 02/07/2025 15:38

When we moved into our house, I declared that the bright yellow front door would be the first thing to go.

Thirty years (and a few re-paints) later, it remains Sunflower Yellow.

"The house with the bright yellow door" comes in very useful when directing people to us.

Embrace the yellow!!🌻

Just found some more F&B. They suggest a light undercoat. No blue should come through but is this on a upvc door? Does paint actually work on them?

It’s awful, it’s like a highlighter yellow! I thought you neabt like a primrose.

Thegirlwithnousername · 02/07/2025 15:40

I love it! I want to paint mine yellow..What paint did you use?

ParmaVioletTea · 02/07/2025 15:41

YABU. In my home town, yellow front doors indicate a house rented to students.

DeedlessIndeed · 02/07/2025 15:44

It is bright and a bit different. I don't hate it and think it could be even better with some yellow flowers to soften it as per PP.

If you hate it in a week you can always repaint it!

Lonelycrab · 02/07/2025 15:48

Looks great to me OP

Trethew · 02/07/2025 15:49

Love it!

RightOnTheEdge · 02/07/2025 15:51

I think it looks gorgeous OP! 😍
I love yours too @OnyourbarksGSG

Blobbitymacblob · 02/07/2025 15:51

I opened the thread thinking a yellow door would be awful, but I think it looks lovely. Tempted to do mine now.

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 02/07/2025 15:52

when you come home on a dull rainy day your door will be a joy.

cocoonscriticupgrading · 02/07/2025 15:54

I love it! It's bright and cheery and welcoming.

5foot5 · 02/07/2025 15:57

Oh @RainbowLlamas I LOVE your yellow front door. It looks ace

Francestein · 02/07/2025 15:57

I bloody love it. I am fantasing about my dream cottage with either an emerald green door or a periwinkle one. Either way, I’m married to Mr Neutral Central, so will have to convince him he agreed to it years ago….

DancingNotDrowning · 02/07/2025 15:58

Whatever colour you decide on suggest you also paint the architrave - will tie it together more

Trendyname · 02/07/2025 15:59

It looks good.

TheDowagerLadyUrsula · 02/07/2025 15:59

I really like it. I'm saving for a new composite door and want buttercup yellow.

It is a very cool yellow. You might find that you prefer something a tiny bit more golden for the last coat, like F&B Babouche or Little Greene Mister David.
