Just painted my front door bright yellow and I hate it 😭

Help! I had a moment of madness and decided to paint my front door bright yellow. It was a steely blue/grey before which was fine but I wanted something cheerful. It looks bloody awful and 3 coats in and I can still see the blue through it.

Recently separated so wanted something cheerful and happy in my new house. I hate it! 😱

I’m not mad on it, but I think it has potential. Is it the right shade of yellow? It’s certainly fixable.

I like it OP. Very bright and cheery! Once you get used to it you'll like it I'm sure. Give me a bright colour like this over drab grey any day!

Hiddenmnetter · 02/07/2025 14:14

If you’re painting over a dark colour use a light coloured (white) primer/sealer before painting (in future) so that the lighter colour doesn’t have to compete. As you’re where you are now, just more coats will fix the job. It should show the colour you want eventually.

I love that! There's a house with a bright yellow door near us and it looks so cheery and welcoming. A couple more coats maybe and yours will look fab. I really like the wreath as well.

Lafufu · 02/07/2025 14:15

Oh I like it! It's very cheerful.

irrelevantdaughter · 02/07/2025 14:17

I think it looks gorgeous OP.
Where did you get the wreath as that looks lovely too?

F&B only have 4 yellow front doors on their web site. It’s clearly not a popular choice. I think the door and house need to be perfect. I’m not convinced about 3 of these. I think the white cottage looks great. The others, not so much and are helped along by planting and being good doors. Maybe a more muted yellow would be good?

The door with the lantern over it is beautiful!

SwankyPants · 02/07/2025 14:18

Love it!

I think you’ve got the right sort of door for this colour

RowsOfFlowers · 02/07/2025 14:21

I love it!!!! So cheerful 🌼🌼🌼🌼

blackframegame · 02/07/2025 14:21

It looks good OP, I am like this I pick something then I hate it then a few days or weeks later I realise I do like it. Its just your brain getting used to the change!

ForeveraBluebird · 02/07/2025 14:22

I think it looks lovely, the flowers in the wreath are a nice compliment to the yellow .

DiscoPig · 02/07/2025 14:22

I like it too. Ours is bright orange. An F and B colour, possibly Charlotte's Locks.

tinaabbot · 02/07/2025 14:23

I think it looks great!!

Jamesblonde2 · 02/07/2025 14:24

The yellow colour looks nice but it will need to compliment the brickwork colour.

NoelFaraday · 02/07/2025 14:28

I think you’re meant to do a white coat of something first that acts as a barrier for the old paint colour showing through (unless scratches), similar to a primer.

Then you would only need a few coats of the new colour.

i think you may end up buying more paint to get the full coverage.

I see so many drab grey doors so yours will make a nice change.

Ahh now that would have made sense 🤣

Op I LOVE it. I live on a tiny row of 5 miners curates and ash the houses are so boring. My lintels and sills needed doing and the row just looked so miserable. So I went all out, and got lots of planters and baskets. I LOVE it. But I think my neighbours are a bit 😱😱😱. When I’m out watering the planters I get loads on compliments. Just takes a bit of getting used to.

I think that looks lovely! Keep going with some more coats to get rid of the blue shining through

DinoLil · 02/07/2025 14:42

@RainbowLlamasI absolutely LOVE that!! So bright, happy and cheerful!

I've got a miserable white plastic door. I'd swap for yours any day!

Not finished but this is what it looks like so far!

I love it, nice and bright. Maybe one more coat?

I painted some indoor wood recently and was feeling dispirited when 3 coats in the colour was still patchy, 4 coats it suddenly looked good and I did one extra for good measure.

KnickerlessParsons · 02/07/2025 14:48

At least one more coat needed, but it’s lovely!

sassyduck · 02/07/2025 14:49

What a nice happy colour. Keep going!

AprilShowers25 · 02/07/2025 14:49

Not a huge fan of yellow but I think it looks lovely, maybe change the little frame around the window to a dark grey or a bright contrast colour.
