Just painted my front door bright yellow and I hate it 😭

Help! I had a moment of madness and decided to paint my front door bright yellow. It was a steely blue/grey before which was fine but I wanted something cheerful. It looks bloody awful and 3 coats in and I can still see the blue through it.

Recently separated so wanted something cheerful and happy in my new house. I hate it! 😱

can you afford to change letterbox ans handle to gold? i think this will make all the difference.

Lovely yellow :)

Whataretalkingabout · 02/07/2025 16:03

If you are finding it a bit bright , you could tone the yellow down by adding a bit of its complimentary colour, purple. But go slowly , add small quantities and it will need a few new coats. This would definitely hide the blue coming through.

Newblackdress · 02/07/2025 16:06

I love it. You just need to get rid of any remaining blue and then get used to it. What could be more cheerful than a yellow front door?
However, I'd lose the wreath. The door is enough of a statement on its own and the colours don't go.

I’ve just done another coat and it’s improving a bit. I think with the blue underneath the yellow was turning a dirty colour which looked awful. Needs sooo many coats of paint to fully cover it!

i guess it’s too late, but maybe a primer would have helped

averythinline · 02/07/2025 16:09

I love it ....was gutted during lockdown when i couldn't get the yellow paint i wanted and ended painting ny door blue.. which although nicer than before is nowhere nearly as cheerful as yellow

Then needed a new door and went for red as dh didn't like the shade of yellow on offer...
Still smile every time i see a yellow door

Crankyaboutfood · 02/07/2025 16:09

sorry i didn’t read everything first—it’s beautiful and so so cheery. you just need time to get used to it!

Not finished but this is what it looks like so far!

Its you.

You can see all the flaws that no one else can see. And certainly can't see from the street.

RedToothBrush · 02/07/2025 16:11

It looks nice.

Ahh now that would have made sense 🤣

Yep white coat first and replace the silver fittings with gold and it will bring out the sunshine.

Lighteningstrikes · 02/07/2025 16:14

It’s really lovely.

But next time, always use an appropriate undercoat.

Ohtobemycat · 02/07/2025 16:18

I love it. It would cheer me up walking past 😍

Ohtobemycat · 02/07/2025 16:21

Adding to my I love it.
I think with the pale brick you need a dark surround. So its the white frame surround that is jarring. Would look great in a dark blue.

alsobigofboob · 02/07/2025 16:22

I love that! Such a happy sunshine yellow. Beautiful!

GoFaster83 · 02/07/2025 16:24

I love it! Keep going!

BurntBroccoli · 02/07/2025 16:25

It does look nice - I love a yellow door! The only thing that maybe is being slightly off in person is that it may be too cool a yellow to complement the warm bricks?

You could easily find a slightly warmer complementary shade though and wouldn’t take loads of coats.

Maxorias · 02/07/2025 16:26

I think it looks fine. I'd perhaps have picked a lighter yellow/bit more pastel but as others said in the winter it'll look very nice and cheerful.

Don't second guess yourself OP, your door looks great !

AprilShowers25 · 02/07/2025 16:28

I think dark grey (anthracite) outer frame, window frame, handle and letter box would look really smart

justasking111 · 02/07/2025 16:30

Well too late now but should have sanded down, used a primer and maybe a small roller rather than a brush.

It's a lovely sunny colour though.

VictoriaEra · 02/07/2025 16:31

I really like it.

floppybit · 02/07/2025 16:32

I love a yellow front door! My front door is yellow, it looks really cheerful 😀. Like everyone else has said, I just think you need to persevere with more coats. If push comes to shove you could always change to a warmer shade of yellow and use the coats you have done so far as a base coat. Mine is in Babouche by Farrow and Ball.

shrodingersvaccine · 02/07/2025 16:33

I love this, is it Little Greene Mister David? I've just gone with LG Yellow pink for mine (I'm doing up the whole house) and it's made such a difference to the outside already. Maybe try some brass hardware to warm it all up if you've budget!

Twinkletwinklelil · 02/07/2025 16:35

Can you paint it a few coats of white and then yellow?

OurMavis · 02/07/2025 16:36

I love it!
So easy to go with the crowd and drab F&B colours.
I've been thinking of painting my front door and you have inspired me.
Mine is dark mahogany brown so will take some covering. I had thought about pink but I'm now leaning towards yellow.

Imaybeoldbutstillrandy · 02/07/2025 16:37

I love it. I wouldn't be bold enough to go for yellow, but it looks sunny & welcoming. Maybe needs a few more coats.

Lonelycrab · 02/07/2025 16:38

TizerorFizz · 02/07/2025 15:38

Just found some more F&B. They suggest a light undercoat. No blue should come through but is this on a upvc door? Does paint actually work on them?

Zinsser Allcoat.

I have yet to find a surface that stuff won’t bond to. I’m sure it’s made by aliens or something.
