To think “non-binary” is becoming a fashion statement for some people rather than a true identity?

Not saying it’s not real but the aestheticisation of it is creeping in.

OP posts:
Shedmistress · 25/06/2025 12:19

It has never been real.

TimeForTeaAndToast · 25/06/2025 12:19

Non binary is just nonsense.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 25/06/2025 12:20

The androgynous aesthetic has been around for eons. The insistence that this is a inner soul issue is completely ideological.

BlueJuniper94 · 25/06/2025 12:20

You are being unreasonable to think it was ever anything other

ShillyShallySherbet · 25/06/2025 12:21

Is it just another word for androgynous?

SalmonAndHorseradish · 25/06/2025 12:21

We're all 'non-binary' if the definition is not conforming in full to every single sex stereotype, but most of us just call that a personality.

BrokeGnome · 25/06/2025 12:24

What's the definition of this?

No - androgyny is a look. Non-binary is meant to be a gender identity. My post is about how, for some, the lines seem to be getting blurred in a way that feels more performative than genuine.

OP, define 'gender identity'.

Also, define 'non-binary'.

Exactly. And people who call themselves non binary think it makes them seem more interesting when, in fact, it just means they're no different to anyone else.

TheSlantedOwl · 25/06/2025 12:32

It’s not a true identity because it’s not a true anything.

Being gender non-conforming is real, because that means not complying with societal ideas about what a man or a woman should be/look like.

Non binary is trying to pretend that you can slip in between the gaps of biological reality to make a statement about being super special and different. And in doing so you undermine women’s rights.

"Becoming" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence.

Snorlaxo · 25/06/2025 12:34

If you’re talking about young people like teens then performative is part of the growing up process and working out who you are or aren’t. It does seem like a fashion statement to some but fitting in can be hard when you’re a teen and have ND.

MeDepresso · 25/06/2025 12:36

My 20 year old identifies as non-binary. They aren't doing so for attention nor because they think they're super special. But MN never fails to know better(!)

Smailand · 25/06/2025 12:36

Wait till they hit 45. They can say they’re non binary till they’re blue in the face, but Mother Nature will just reply “Cool, here’s some menopause”!

vast majority of non-binary people I’ve ever met have been biological women (and I’ve lived in very diverse communities all my life). I don’t believe that biological women want to undermine their rights.

My niece once identified as a cat.

x2boys · 25/06/2025 12:37

Well they say how do you know Someone is non binary ?
they will.tell.you
people can identify how they want
what they can,t expect is for others tho pander to them and their bull shit
they need to realise that the world doesn't revolve around them and their preferred pronouns

bathofbeans · 25/06/2025 12:40

Yes it's just an adolescent fashion statement. As soon as loads of 30/40/50 year old non-cool people are walking around as non-binary, I bet it will miraculously disappear from teenage culture.

I honestly think non binary is the new Androgynous although the non binary think it is much more but its a trend.

What is the difference between 'a look' and 'a gender identity'?

Yep.And in the early 80,we had Gender ,Benders, every generation thinks they have invented something.

Profhilodisaster · 25/06/2025 12:43

Why do they have to announce it , as if anyone gives a monkeys .

DiscoBob · 25/06/2025 12:43

It's really rather ridiculous. If they are a living mammal, then you are either male or female.

You can dress and look and be as androgenous as you like. You can like and do things that are traditionally more aimed at the opposite sex.

If someone looks at you and thinks 'I'm not immediately sure if that's a man or a woman', that's fine. Especially If that's a look you're going for.

You can change your name. But you can't be 'no sex'. Unless you were genuinely born with no reproductive organs for either. But I think that's exceptionally rare.
