To think high heels (especially when worn casually) look absolutely ridiculous?

Takemeback84 · 28/05/2025 17:26

I’m probably going to get absolutely flamed for this.

But aibu to think that high heels are a complete monstrosity? The only time I think they are passable is if it’s something very formal. For example TV presenters sitting on a couch, or attending an award ceremony. As they’re really being worn just for show.

Tbh I don’t see many people wearing high heels these days, but sometimes I’ll notice a women teetering round the park or the shops, barely able to walk and looking very uncomfortable, I’ve even seen a woman bowling in high heels.

They look so uncomfortable and impractical.

I agree. And when the wearer can’t walk properly in them, even funnier

TimeForTeaAndToast · 28/05/2025 17:29

They are ridiculous. I can't stand having sore feet.

Anotherparkingthread · 28/05/2025 17:29

I love them. I own probably over 200 pairs of designer shoes at the moment and 90 percent of them are heels. I literally love everything about them. My only regret in life is not wearing them more! That and bikinis, I wish I'd basically worn nothing but a bikini and some strappy choos for my entire 20s.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 28/05/2025 17:30

yabu, high heels make a woman look sexy! it elongates the leg and makes your walk sexier

as long as you can walk in them of course, otherwise they do look a mess

TinyTempest · 28/05/2025 17:30

I don't feel quite as strongly as you about them but I do think the huge skyscraper heels look ridiculous.

And even more so when not even halfway through the night, the women are taking them off because they can't walk or dance in them.

Surely it must spoil their enjoyment of the evening/event?

I just think it makes them look older?

They're really only popular with the over 40s from what I see and I'm 56!

Takemeback84 · 28/05/2025 17:33

I’ve just remembered where I saw someone wearing them recently.

It was Chester Zoo. A woman was hobbling around Chester Zoo in a pair of high heels.

I’m not keen on heels full stop but I can understand wearing them for a night out or special event. But why would anyone do it to themselves for the flaming zoo?

Why assume that people want to look 'sexy'?

They look ridiculous, yanbu.

IthasYes · 28/05/2025 17:34

I like heels but when someone can't walk in them I think they do look silly because you're wearing them to surely look nice? And you look tottering and unstable which doesn't look sleek and smooth? better off in walkable shoes

IthasYes · 28/05/2025 17:35

I watch the real housewives series and seeing them hobble about in heels gives me second hand nerves they will fall. I guess falls are edited out

ToKittyornottoKitty · 28/05/2025 17:35

I think crocs are absolutely grim, I just hate them. But I don’t have to wear them so whatever, if someone else is comfortable in ugly impractical shoes then good for them

nomas · 28/05/2025 17:36

I think it depends on who is wearing them.

If someone is confident and has great taste (regardless of age, size etc) , they can look great.

If someone is clunky and heavy footed it can be look ridiculous.

Really, I see millennials in them too! And club goers 🤭

Lately ive seen a lot of kitten heels

SummerySunshine8 · 28/05/2025 17:36

I'm quite tall for a woman so I look ridiculous in high heels. I also can't walk in them without looking like I've just left a bottomless brunch

catin8oot5 · 28/05/2025 17:37

It’s just such a change in fashion. I occasionally have to go to my London office and it really catches my attention when a smartly dressed woman is clip clopping on the platform in high heels. Ten years ago every single person would have been wearing them.

TinyTempest · 28/05/2025 17:37

The thing is, most women who wear them think they can walk in them.

But if someone videoed them from behind when they were walking down the street, I think they'd be rather shocked to see how they really look.

Especially after a few drinks!

I think that if you're wearing heels, you want to look and feel your best

Feeling sexy can be part of feeling your best, it's not about whether a man likes it

nutbrownhare15 · 28/05/2025 17:38

They can look great but why would you want to feel so uncomfortable for someone else's benefit? I used to wear them on nights out as a young woman, cannot be bothered now. So many nights walking home in bare feet with my feet absolutely killing me. I have a very few left which I rarely wear but they have had to pass a comfortableness test so the heels are pretty low.

I think the opposite. They’ve not gregarious for a long while and the only people I see wearing them are mid - late 20 somethings

This is fair, on the tube there are a lot of trainers and flat shoes / kitten heels

Yes, kitten heels are popular and I think that's because they're rarely that high.

LavenderHaze19 · 28/05/2025 17:39

I don’t think they necessarily look bad - but they definitely look very dated now.

thecatneuterer · 28/05/2025 17:39

I completely agree. It's so rare to see any kind of heel these days that I tend to stare if I see them. My perception has definitely adjusted as now, I agree, they look ridiculous to me. Twenty five years ago they didn't.

The last ones I saw were being worn by a middle aged woman in Tesco and looked daft. I only see them on the middle aged these days - generally together with duck lips and straw coloured hair extensions. The young/cool/classy don't wear them.

Why assume some people don’t want to look sexy. You really shouldn’t assume anything

I’m 43 and haven’t worn heels for years. None of my friends do either. I think they’re quite aging and would assume the wearer is over 50 in most circumstances.

And in response to the previous poster… I’m sexy enough without “elongating” my legs 😂 or I’m over 40 and don’t dress up impress men.
