To think high heels (especially when worn casually) look absolutely ridiculous?

Takemeback84 · 28/05/2025 17:26

I’m probably going to get absolutely flamed for this.

But aibu to think that high heels are a complete monstrosity? The only time I think they are passable is if it’s something very formal. For example TV presenters sitting on a couch, or attending an award ceremony. As they’re really being worn just for show.

Tbh I don’t see many people wearing high heels these days, but sometimes I’ll notice a women teetering round the park or the shops, barely able to walk and looking very uncomfortable, I’ve even seen a woman bowling in high heels.

They look so uncomfortable and impractical.

I think that if you're wearing heels, you want to look and feel your best

Feeling sexy can be part of feeling your best, it's not about whether a man likes it

That’s a good point. I wear flats 90% of the time but even when I wear 2 inch boots I feel taller and more confident and people treat me differently. When I’m in flats, a lot of people think they can walk through me.

InMyOpenOnion · 28/05/2025 17:40

Some people wear them well some people don't. Worn and carried with ease, they can look fabulous. They do stick out in an inappropriate place though, like a farm!

greatyak · 28/05/2025 17:40

I think heels look fantastic with the right outfit. Some outfits look all wrong with flats. But I can’t really be bothered wearing them which I regret. As they make the right outfit look so so chic

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 28/05/2025 17:41

A lot of you have a lot of feelings about something that doesn’t affect you at all!

heels look great. I can’t wear them because I don’t like sore feet and I’m already very tall. If I could, I would.

Sunnyevenings · 28/05/2025 17:41

They look ludicrous.

On the rare occasions I see them nowadays, I do a double take. I remember wearing them every day in work ten years ago. They look so ridiculous nowadays.

IfNot · 28/05/2025 17:41

I’ve got lots of pretty comfortable heels. Not super high but 3-4 inches. I bloody love them. And I can run and dance in them let alone walk!
And you may not like women in heels but your husband does 😁

TinyTempest · 28/05/2025 17:42

Whenever I go into central London to the theatre/restaurants etc, I often see women over 40 wearing them even when walking along the cobble stoned streets.

Now that is a skill you need to master quickly if you don't want a broken ankle! 🙈

MmeChoufleur · 28/05/2025 17:42

I used to wear them for work every day years ago. God knows how. Then during lockdown I barely had a pair of shoes on my feet for over a year, and when I tried wearing heels again they were like instruments of torture. Now and again I’ll try them with an outfit for a wedding or something and quickly revert to flats by the time I’ve got from the wardrobe to the mirror. I love seeing dd going for nights out in trainers or docs. She’ll never know the pain of the barefoot blistered taxi walk!

IfNot · 28/05/2025 17:43

I only see them on the middle aged these days
So!?
Is being middle aged bad…?

So you also have feelings about something that doesn't affect you if you can't wear them 🤷‍♂️

Greenartywitch · 28/05/2025 17:43

Agree with you OP.

You see women, especially on TV, wearing ridiculously high heels they can't even walk in. it all looks painful and rather silly.

IDontLikePinaColadas · 28/05/2025 17:45

There’s definitely a time and a place for them (dog walk on the common is a no) but I do think, when worn well and by a woman who can walk in them, they look great.

I used to wear them almost daily for work pre-lockdown with no problems but my feet have now become very out of practice. l do pull them out when I want to feel I look my best, although that is usually only when it’s a cab ride to somewhere I can sit down for the majority of the night and then get a cab back these days.

I fear my all-night-long-clubbing-in-heels days are far behind me - probably best for everyone tbh.

Judiezones · 28/05/2025 17:46

As someone who wore high heels daily and ran for the bus in stilettos, I agree with you. Nothing ruins a lovely outfit more than someone hobbling in too-high shoes.
My feet are a mess from years of platforms, then stiletto winkle pickers and I live in Skechers these days! I am old and not at all trendy though.

donttellmewhaticantdo · 28/05/2025 17:46

I love them for a night out or wedding. I'm 33 and wore them when I was in my late teens and early twenties every weekend I was out. I was recently at a wedding and wore heels for the first time in years. They just make me feel much more confident in a dress. I don't really like seeing dresses worn with trainers unless it's a casual dress worn through the day. If I wore a casual dress I'd opt for flat sandals over trainers.

I do agree about them only looking good if you can walk properly in them though. Gone are the days I could wear huge heels but I used to be a pro 😂

You know there are varying heel heights. Not all high heels are ‘ridiculously high’

No, I'd be thrilled to be middle aged again. It's just an observation. You don't see them on the young or the old, just the middle aged.

Don't let people treat you like that!

ShesTheAlbatross · 28/05/2025 17:48

Do you mean stilettos? Or any shoe with a heel?

Tbf you’ve probably mainly noticed the women barely able to walk, and not noticed the ones who walk just fine in them.

Reallyyyyyy · 28/05/2025 17:49

I love a heel. Not a stilleto for myself though. But I always have a block heel for ankle boots and a block heel for heedled Mary jane style shoes.

I love the look of stilettos but cant walk too far in them, so don't have any.

I personally think doc Martins look awful. But that's why we are all different, isn't it?

It’s just such a change in fashion. I occasionally have to go to my London office and it really catches my attention when a smartly dressed woman is clip clopping on the platform in high heels. Ten years ago every single person would have been wearing them.

I agree. I'm 52 and can remember a time when we all wore them. Remember stilettos and jeans 🤦‍♀️🤣

I haven't bought a pair of heels for about 20 years, I think since my wedding. I still have a couple of pairs but never wear them now.

You're right, it's change of fashion. Now heels remind me of my DMs tarty friend from the 80s who used to brag to teenaged me that stockings, suspenders and high heels were the way to get a man 😳

Berlinlover · 28/05/2025 17:50

I wore them once and could barely walk. Never again.

Yes, I think when I wear heels and feel taller and more confident, that comes across in my demeanour which commands more respect.

Whereas when I’m in flats and 5 foot and a bit, people can tell I’m a bit unconfident and can treat me differently.

MaryTheTurtle · 28/05/2025 17:51

I don’t understand why presenters who just sit wear heals what’s the point?
