To think high heels (especially when worn casually) look absolutely ridiculous?

I’m probably going to get absolutely flamed for this.

But aibu to think that high heels are a complete monstrosity? The only time I think they are passable is if it’s something very formal. For example TV presenters sitting on a couch, or attending an award ceremony. As they’re really being worn just for show.

Tbh I don’t see many people wearing high heels these days, but sometimes I’ll notice a women teetering round the park or the shops, barely able to walk and looking very uncomfortable, I’ve even seen a woman bowling in high heels.

They look so uncomfortable and impractical.

The thing is, most women who wear them think they can walk in them.

But if someone videoed them from behind when they were walking down the street, I think they'd be rather shocked to see how they really look.

Especially after a few drinks!

I walk better in them when I've had a few drinks! I think I'm Cindy Crawford on the catwalk then. This is why I hate filming on phones on nights out - I want to remember it as it was on my head, and not see the reality of it!! 😆

BIossomtoes · 28/05/2025 18:12

I think they might be gone for quite a long time now. There’s a generation of women who have never worn them and probably never will. The last time I saw a pair of stilettos was on the mother of the bride last year, she was literally the only woman at the wedding wearing them.

DancingDucks · 28/05/2025 18:13

i love the look of them, but i just can't be arsed with them these days.

I wore them every day for work for about 20 years, I rarely wear them now and only if I have a very formal event. I was at a very 'posh' wedding recently and almost all the women, young and older wore high heels, but most had a pair of flats for the evening, myself included.

MidnightMeltdown · 28/05/2025 18:13

I think they can look good but haven’t worn them since I was in my 20s because I can’t be arsed.

The main problem I’ve discovered with not wearing them is that some skirts are difficult to style with flats. I have thick ankles and flat shoes make them look thicker.

I’ve seen a woman in heels at Disney in Florida in the heat, madness

I was thinking of the women I saw at Disneyland Paris in high heels - I felt so sorry for them that they couldn’t just enjoy their day and be comfortable, looking a certain was was more important to them.

NoSitSherlock · 28/05/2025 18:14

It’s a well known fact that the taller you are the more your presence is felt.
Im 5’2, If I don’t wear some form of heel I often get patted on the head at work!!

Takemeback84 · 28/05/2025 18:14

I don’t think they’ll ever make a comeback like how they were.

Everything is so much more casual these days. I can remember when you couldn’t get into a nightclub wearing jeans, let alone trainers.

But my clubbing days are behind me, and I definitely won’t be wearing heels for a day out walking.

Yuk

Whats yucky about looking sexy?

tillyandmilly · 28/05/2025 18:16

Crazy! Never worn heels - also I am tall so they would make me nearer 6 ft - can’t understand the appeal? They don’t elongate your leg - they crucify your feet and end up with bunions/hammer toes!

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 28/05/2025 18:16

nomas · 28/05/2025 17:39

That’s a good point. I wear flats 90% of the time but even when I wear 2 inch boots I feel taller and more confident and people treat me differently. When I’m in flats, a lot of people think they can walk through me.

I like that you feel a boost in confidence when you wear heels ❤️

But don't like that you feel that people walk through you when you wear flats - defo start pushing back! x

WaltzingWaters · 28/05/2025 18:16

I only 5ft, so I love to wear heels on a night out. But I go for comfy, easy to walk in ones - wedge heeled boots. For fancy events like weddings I have a pair of ballroom dance shoes I wear. Seriously- they look pretty and are SO much comfier and easier to walk in. Can wear them the whole day/evening at a wedding and dance the night away!
But yes, women going for a general stroll in heels they can’t walk in look ridiculous. I remember seeing this a lot in Japan.

I’m 5ft 2in as well and nobody would ever have dared try that with me. Despite never wearing heels.

Chinese people who used to bind girls' and women's feet so they could only totter around thought they looked sexy.

Readytohealnow · 28/05/2025 17:27

I agree. And when the wearer can’t walk properly in them, even funnier

It's not really funny when the NHS will have to pick up the tab when they have to have operations on their feet and backs bc of their stupidity.

Mistyglade · 28/05/2025 18:17

I think trainers and dresses look dated now. I’m not a heels person anymore but I definitely look better with a heel. I must agree teetering in heels look silly in most situations these days.

NicolaSturgeon · 28/05/2025 18:17

You are being unreasonable. The six inch tartan ones you get for a tenner on Princes Street are the jinkies and I will always wear them no matter how difficult that might be.

Yeah I think that’s what it is.

When I see someone wearing them it just seems like they’re more concerned with how they look than enjoying their day out.

There are so many lovely flat options it seems ridiculous.

yabu, high heels make a woman look sexy! it elongates the leg and makes your walk sexier

as long as you can walk in them of course, otherwise they do look a mess

I hope you still feel sexy when you have back pain when you are older and you have bunions on your sexy feet.

Well I haven't worn heels and have back pain so I still think it's worth it

@tillyandmilly
you’ve obviously never been patted on the head and been spoken down to

LongDistanceClara44 · 28/05/2025 18:20

I really don't like these threads that just put people down for no reason. Let people wear what they want. Why the need to judge and have horrible thoughts about people just based on their appearance.

historyismything82 · 28/05/2025 18:20

I can't wear them anymore but I know a lot of ladies that wear them beautifully. I wish I could.

the80sweregreat · 28/05/2025 18:20

I wished I could wear them , but I never could and never will now. Maybe in another life I’ll be a woman who can.

Thepeopleversuswork · 28/05/2025 18:21

They are definitely quite aging, I think, and nowadays I think they are very dated. I see fewer and fewer women wearing them and the ones who do look a bit overdone.

The industry I work in used to more or less mandate them for women in "professional" environments. It was part of the professional uniform. Nowadays almost no women wear them in this industry.

I also think they look naff when worn to low social things like the pub.

They still have a place for black tie events/weddings etc, but I can't be arsed with them outside of those settings and tbh I'm relieved I don't have to bother.
