To think high heels (especially when worn casually) look absolutely ridiculous?

Takemeback84 · 28/05/2025 17:26

I’m probably going to get absolutely flamed for this.

But aibu to think that high heels are a complete monstrosity? The only time I think they are passable is if it’s something very formal. For example TV presenters sitting on a couch, or attending an award ceremony. As they’re really being worn just for show.

Tbh I don’t see many people wearing high heels these days, but sometimes I’ll notice a women teetering round the park or the shops, barely able to walk and looking very uncomfortable, I’ve even seen a woman bowling in high heels.

They look so uncomfortable and impractical.

I can’t wear really high heels now because of my back problem, but I’m always envious of women when I see them wearing lovely high shoes and I have to wear shoes the height that my mum wore 😆. I think high heels look really elegant, providing the person can walk properly in them. I think wearing flat shoes with skirts or dresses looks really frumpy, but the worst thing of all is wearing trainers with a skirt.

AliTheMinx · 28/05/2025 18:34

YABU!!! I think heels looks great when worn with the correct outfit for certain occasions.

BogRollBOGOF · 28/05/2025 18:34

Sometimes it's nice to reach the dizzying heights of 5'4" and not feel stumpy.

And no one has invented a comfortable, stylish flat shoe yet. Anything not slip-off looks like a fugly school shoe by the time it's condensed down to a size 2 or is clearly designed to go with 8 year olds party dresses 🙄

SuziQuinto · 28/05/2025 18:35

I was at a really stylish wedding at a beautiful venue, and most of the women, including the bride and bridesmaids, wore flat shoes. Gorgeous, stylish flat shoes! Everyone looked great and somehow a bit more modern.

Kittykittymeowmee · 28/05/2025 18:36

I used to wear them everyday because (1) they actually make my flat feet feel less tired, (2) it is a good leg workout and (3) it is a good look! I still own heels, I'd like to have occasions to wear them. I mostly work remotely and I sometimes wear them when I go into work depending on how I feel that day.

MatildaMovesMountains · 28/05/2025 18:37

It's a really dated look - I can't stand heels. They don't make you look sexier/slimmer/taller, just outdated and self-torturing.

Frostiesflakes · 28/05/2025 18:41

If I want my DH to do something like paint the house I whip out my louboutins and put them on with a sexy dress
doesn’t take long and the house gets painted 😂

I love heels and I can definitely walk in them although I only wear them for going out somewhere special wedding funerals club night or if I want to get my husband in the mood to do some DIY

Nettleteaser101 · 28/05/2025 18:42

I was watching The Aprentice few weeks ago, and the lady who questions the contestants at the end (can't remember her name),she was dressed in pink and had a lovely pair of pink stilletto sandles, and I thought we'll done if you can wear them because she is 82, but she was sitting down all the time.

CoffeeCantata · 28/05/2025 18:43

They look dated and 'try hard' to me. It's largely the way they force you to walk and stand.

Lower heels or flats (if your legs can take them - mine can't, sadly) are really chic, I think.

Nicole621 · 28/05/2025 18:43

I think they're very dated now.

Todayisaday · 28/05/2025 18:45

I absolutely love heels. I had a lovely shoe collection. I am very sad I cant wear them anymore due to pregnancies messing with my feet and now chronic nerve pain.
I do like the fact heels arent mandatory attire now for looking smart, but I really miss them .

AnxiousPixie · 28/05/2025 18:47

I wear them every day for work, I walk well in them and find good quality ones very comfy. I wouldn't wear them to the zoo though. I enjoy wearing them. I don't object to the shoes that anyone chooses to wear I just wish women would stop saying that other women are ridiculous for thier own choices. Shocker, people have different tastes and likes.

Renamed · 28/05/2025 18:48

Thinks - if everyone thinks they look that dated, they must be about to come back…

BatchCookBabe · 28/05/2025 18:52

I agree. Some of the most uncomfortable nights out I ever had (when I was late teens/early 20s,) was when I was in high heels/stilettos. Awful invention, clearly invented by men (to make women look 'sexy' and make their legs look longer. For them of course.)🙄

I stopped wearing them by the age of 25, and loathe the fecking things.

VictoriaEra2 · 28/05/2025 18:55

Not read replies but agree, OP. Only within the last couple of years has it started to look very foolish

Tortielady · 28/05/2025 18:55

Each to their own. High heels are fine for some people. I've heard that heels can give you confidence, especially if you're short. I'll never find out though - I'm 60 and was born with terrible feet (a congenital deformity) which meant I didn't get a high heels habit or learn to walk in them.

That said, ballet flats don't suit me either. I think they look great, and appear comfortable but there's no impact protection in them and they are murder on my joints and the backs of my legs. I basically spend my life in trainers and anything with a thick sole.

LeaveALittleNote · 28/05/2025 18:56

They’re just out of fashion at the moment so we perceive them to be ridiculous. We’ll all be wearing them again in five years time.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 28/05/2025 17:30

yabu, high heels make a woman look sexy! it elongates the leg and makes your walk sexier

as long as you can walk in them of course, otherwise they do look a mess

Oh well so long as they look sexy. Who fir exactly?

RobinEllacotStrike · 28/05/2025 18:57

Takemeback84 · 28/05/2025 17:33

I’ve just remembered where I saw someone wearing them recently.

It was Chester Zoo. A woman was hobbling around Chester Zoo in a pair of high heels.

I’m not keen on heels full stop but I can understand wearing them for a night out or special event. But why would anyone do it to themselves for the flaming zoo?

Edited

reminds me of that episode of Modern Family when Gloria goes to Disneyland (Disneyworld??) in heels 🤣🤣

I've never been able to wear heels. When I've tried them on they feel ridiculous & painful. Friends who wore them have deformed painful feet with bunions now.

I can do a stompy solid heel, but these days I just get an inch or 2 extra from a platform if required. I'm 5'8 but still enjoy and extra inch or 2.

I am a fan of fugly shoes, trainers & Blundstones (formerly DM's until they went totally shite).

If a woman can walk in them without looking like she is in pain, or restricted by them I do think they can look ok. But generally they look ridiculous I agree.

Mostly I'm appalled at the idea that women should wear heels at all, especially when a work dress code demands them - ridiculous and hopefully illegal now.

Doubt it. Most young women now will never have worn them and they’ll look and feel completely alien to them. If you’ve spent your entire adult life in comfortable shoes you can run in, you’re not going to change to little torture chambers. I think they’re as likely to make a comeback as corsets which were abandoned for the same reason.

MyKingdomForACat · 28/05/2025 18:58

Loved them in the 80s. The look of them makes me wince now. I love my Chelsea boots and trainers

ShesTheAlbatross · 28/05/2025 18:24

I don’t understand why heels provoke such an unpleasant reaction. “Tacky”, “try hard”, even “monstrosity” ffs. They’re just other people’s shoes 🙄

Because, MN is often very ageist and classist. Heels are out with most of the young (whose trends people who don’t know much about style follow to try to stay relevant). Heels are worn by older women (ew) and by tacky Northerners ( ew ew)
Thats my take anyway!
Actually one of the “ coolest” young women I know has a uniform of pale blue jeans worn with stilletoes. She looks ace and is very East London hipster so it’s not only us old bags who like a heel.
I like flat shoes too but heels provoke a sort of emotional response on here!

applegingermint · 28/05/2025 19:00

My 75yo MIL wears heels every day and all I think is of her trotting along trying to keep up with everyone on a family day out. I don’t understand why you’d wear something that deliberately makes it harder to walk. That, and they look a bit dated in most cases.

VoodooQualities · 28/05/2025 19:01

I've got size 9 feet, I'd LOVE a pair of sexy heels and normal feet to put in them.

For the person wearing them! If you like heels, you'll feel your best wearing them
