To think high heels (especially when worn casually) look absolutely ridiculous?

Takemeback84 · 28/05/2025 17:26

I’m probably going to get absolutely flamed for this.

But aibu to think that high heels are a complete monstrosity? The only time I think they are passable is if it’s something very formal. For example TV presenters sitting on a couch, or attending an award ceremony. As they’re really being worn just for show.

Tbh I don’t see many people wearing high heels these days, but sometimes I’ll notice a women teetering round the park or the shops, barely able to walk and looking very uncomfortable, I’ve even seen a woman bowling in high heels.

They look so uncomfortable and impractical.

High heels are for men pleasers. They show you’re submissive and lack natural confidence. I always feel sorry for women in heels. They’re trying so hard, but just look ridiculous.

So not a single lesbian has ever worn a pair of high heels...? 🙄

There are more ways of pleasing men than sexually. Sexual orientation is irrelevant in a corporate setting.

HRTQueen · 30/05/2025 08:41

I love high heels they can look so elegant I love wedges too and a slight platform

I do not wear shoes as high as I used to as feel too old to and I dress differently

they will come back in fashion the same was being said in the 90’s

You were 16 in 1991 who was wearing heels then ? It was the age of the DM boot and skater shoes no oh and converse of course ? TBH the only woman I know you regularly wore heels was my grandmother who was born in 1919.

I was wearing heels in the early 90’s (teenager/early 20’s) then around 95 they once again became fashionable (as they will again)

I have never worn dm’s (I think they look ridiculous and I like heavy style boots), only in recent years worn trainers out of the gym (and it’s rare) I had a few converse but mainly wore heels, ballet flats, biker style boots and brogues

when raving boots or ballet pumps never ever those high top trainers

Heels threads on MN are always absolutely wild.

If you look at the AW 2025 shows, pretty much all designers showed heels, many of them stiletto this season. Old fashioned they are not. Admittedly many women out and about favour flats, but to say they are 'out' and 'dated' is, quite simply factually incorrect.

I sometimes wear heels if I feel the outfit calls for them, I sometimes wear flats, I enjoy fashion (probably a lot more then the rabid heel haters).

It's fine not to wear something because you don't like it, but the levels of vitriol are ridiculous.

Hilarious.

No-one would ever accused me of lacking confidence or submissiveness.

Or being a man-pleaser. Never that. I'm the first person to give men a dressing down in public for poor behaviour.

But why let the truth get in the way of your pet theory?

Only when it’s a bloke wearing them.

I always feel sorry for women who find it necessary to boost their own self-worth by knocking other women who see or do things differently.

Yes I agree. They claim their opinion to be a fact, rather than just their own thoughts.

I steer well clear of people who love to belittle others. Not a nice character trait.

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 30/05/2025 12:45

Tbh, I think Covid spelled the death of heels, occasionally I’ll see someone in late 30s to 40s wear them but generally it gives a desperate air. But then I spend my life in jeans and band shirts so prob not the best judge🤣

I have many pairs of beautiful high heels that I only wear on special occasions. I feel very elegant when I wear mine. Almost every female attending a recent day at the races was wearing high heels.

Quoted for REALNESS

Verv · 30/05/2025 16:11

All depends who's wearing them and with what outfit.
Some can look exceptionally stylish, others not.

Personally, i don't wear them as I'm not the type.

Throwmoneyatit · 30/05/2025 16:28

Started wearing heels when I was about 15 and haven't stopped. I wear them for work and with more fancier outfits outside of work. I have cheaper pairs and I have expensive designer pairs. I can walk, run, jump, drive in them.
I also have flats, trainers, low heels and riding boots.
I pick shoes according to my outfit. I like to be well dressed and put together for work and a heel always looks better with my outfits.
If I'm in my gym clothes or lounge wear, I wouldn't wear heels, I'd wear trainers. When I'm with the horses I'm in riding boots, wellies or trainers.
I pick a shoe to suit my outfit. What's wrong with that?!

I don’t need to try hard, men love me anyway. Submissive is pandering to stereotypes, and try hard is women deliberately avoiding anything traditionally seen as feminine to make a point

you crack on, I love heels for me, never once considered wearing them to entice men. Oh and shoot me now, I also like makeup

That is so right.

I enjoy leaning into my womanhood, men love me and hate me in equal measure. I'm considered to be quite beautiful but also repel many, many men.

What I wear on my feet has got fuck all to do with how I approach the world as a woman.

I enjoy subverting expectations.

My lovely BiL described me as a true bohemian.

Who occasionally wears heels.

bittertwisted · 31/05/2025 11:28

@Whorlyou said it so much better than me. Stereotypes and expectations are ingrained. I love the whole ritual of dressing up, shopping, getting ready
It’s actually the ultimate feminine power to go against the expectations of what that makes me. I have a first in law, now work in a very senior tech position having been a programmer. I am mother to 3 sons, love going to football and doing boy stuff. Lift weights. Really enjoy DIY.
surely this is what choice and challenging stereotypes is all about

Well I don't care if they're dated, I love wearing high heels. I'll be wearing these on Saturday night ...I can walk in them just fine, and I'm 54 years old. I say wear whatever makes you feel good!

Those toes look to be in pain. Ouch.

I think high heels mostly look ridiculous. I don’t own any! Agree with the many posters who have said how daft they look when worn in situations they really aren’t designed for like the zoo. I used to watch Rizzoli & Isles years ago (mad US medical examiner / police show). It was baffling and hilarious to watch the coroner turn up at grizzly murder scenes in forests etc wearing a tiny dress and stilettos. WHY.

DinoLil · 31/05/2025 15:32

My best friend at school, always had M&S food in her lunchbox (we all used to try and trade our manky sarnies with her posh stuff!), her mum was so glam. She always, always wore high heels. BF confided that her mum's feet were so deformed from wearing them all the time, that she couldn't wear anything flat, not even a pair of slippers.

We're in our mid 50s now. Sadly, her mum passed away about 30ys ago. Nothing to do with the high heels! But I always think of her fondly.
