He’s on This Morning right now. He makes my skin crawl. Him and Ben Shepherd together is like the duo from Hell.

YANBU - he’s such a creepy man
YABU - he’s a fine upstanding member of society, you’re the creepy one here

He revolts me.

If it's an act he deserves all the Oscars because he plays the part of 'spiteful, dodgy pervert you wouldn't leave alone with man, woman, child, pet, farmyard animal or freshly plucked chicken' to perfection.

I loved Little Britain!! Yes, some of it wouldn’t work nowadays-but it was a very popular show.

One thing I don't understand is why The League of Gentleman have never had any pushback over some of the characters in Royston Vasey, but Little Britain has. Royston Vasey has a butch cross dressing taxi driver, a blacked up fairground character who stole women, multiple men dressed up playing awful female characters (like Marjorie Dawes etc)

I'm not saying they should btw. Both series are fine by me and I loved watching both of them.

But I assume it's because some people don't like David Walliams rather than they are offended by Little Britain.

Agree with you completely.

Well if somebody wanted to make a documentary about me with unsubstantiated "facts" about me being a pervert then I would definitely employ lawyers to stop that happening!

So... by that logic, if the "facts" were substantiated, you'd be absolutely fine about a documentary being made about you being a pervert????

TLOG is deliberately dark, it's horror based comedy, it was very clear about what it was and not one actor from the series has played upon the persona of any character within the series.

To me LB was using stereotypes and clichés for cheap laughs, there was nothing underneath any of the sketches And I didn't think it a stretch to imagine DW saying some of the things his characters did either.

I really don't understand how these things get a pass in DW books, just because he's well-known and a big seller - it's appalling. (Whoever actually wrote them.) I work in a publishing-related field and you can't move for extreme wokery, handwringing about LQBTQ+ and ethnic minority representation, special awards, grants and initiatives for "under-represented" groups, awareness-raising training courses etc etc - but yay let's heavily promote these books full of misogyny, classism, prejudice and sneering based on looks, weight, age, disability etc. Just goes to show it's all meaningless box-ticking and if the money talks no one cares at all.

He gets away with because of nostalgia. His books are illustrated by Quentin Blake, and have similar themes to Dahl. People want to believe there is a new Dahl (there isn't) and that their beloved children's books are being revived (they're not). Nostalgia sells, so they dress it up that way.

Are you telling me the gruff voiced, cross dressing taxi driver who keeps talking about their upcoming surgery isn't a stereotype, or the bossy Job Centre woman ?

Of course the TLOG use stereotypes because sterotypes are funny.

My particular favourite characters are the passive aggressive arguing couple played beautifully by Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton? - I'm from the north and every time I see the sketch in the Italian it takes me right back to nights out up north (Luigi)😂

Yes, very much this.

The characters in TLOG are extreme, gruesome, nightmare horrors whom you would hope and expect never to meet in real life.

Whereas in LB, many of the characters were just very exaggerated lazy stereotypes of actual real-life people whom you would frequently encounter: mouthy schoolchildren, gay men, cross-dressers, elderly ladies, unhelpful customer-facing staff, mummy's boys etc.

Is there truly a difference between "being" someone and "playing the part" of someone (outside of the context of acting of course)

If you're being a creep then you are a creep.

I can't just rob a bank and then be like "no, no, I was only playing the part of bank robber, officer"

Actually, those are good points. But even so, they were grotesquely exaggerated to a point that nobody could actually start to try to match them to real people they meet.

His books are just awful - I once picked one up that a neighbour was giving away, thinking it might suit a young nephew but one look inside was enough to realise what a bad idea that was. Just appalling and nasty, like the supposed author...

I completely agree. DS (12) was given some for Christmas 3 or 4 years ago. I was unimpressed and thankfully, so was he!

I have always found his humour weird, though little britain was hilarious. I have wondered about certain things with him.
Creepy as hell.

NottsNora · 12/06/2025 19:29

TLOG did apologise for the landlord. They seem pretty decent guys. I’ve met Reece Shearsmith and he was a sweetheart.

edagiago · 12/07/2025 17:00

holidayclubs · 20/05/2025 11:51

I’ve met him four times through work. I was expecting the DW you see on tv but I’m convinced it’s just a huge act as he was totally different when not surrounded by people and/or cameras. Almost quiet, polite, courteous and came across really well I was shocked at how I’d pre judged him. It’s a shame he must feel a need to be a certain way in public as he was lovely

I've met him loads of times over the years.. Always been nice to me and I always have to ask myself if people are talking about the same person when I see threads about him on here! Personally seen him do some lovely things when the cameras stopped and nobody was around, He's also done some nice things for me as well.

Also found him to be polite and quite shy, Also found him kind and Generous. He showed concern when I met him one day and I was injured, Asked me if I was ok and what happened to me and if it was painful etc

I'm not claiming to know him because I don't, Just been my experiences of meeting him lots of times throughout the last 15 years.

Then again I have met plenty of celebrities that a lot of people seem to dislike and have also found them fine too! For example a lot of people say Jimmy Carr is a dick but when I met him he was genuinely lovely to me.

GrammarTeacher · 12/07/2025 18:18

Well, Jimmy Carr is a hypocritical tax avoider so there is that.
But no, DW isn’t nice. If you think he is watch the videos of him assaulting young men in the name of comedy and come back to me.
Or read any of his books and see if you think that could come from a ‘nice’ person.

I’m no fan of Jimmy Carr’s comedy, but as a person I find him really interesting. He faced up to the tax issues, and paid it back. It was estimated over 1,100 people used the scheme so he wasn’t alone in that. What makes him a hypocrite?

Another vile man , no smoke without fire and it will be interesting to see who has been enabling his behaviour
