To think that plenty of schools still have brown uniform?

My DC’s school has brown skirts/ pinafores for the girls uniform. They can wear black trousers if they want but most of the girls prefer skirts.

Asda seems to be the only big shop that’s selling them. M&S, Next, John Lewis, etc have all stopped making brown uniform.

We can’t be the only school with this issue?

My primary school was bottle green and my secondary school uniform was brown. I clearly lived in a strange area 🤣😜🤷🏼‍♀️

UnctuousUnicorns · 18/05/2025 14:17

Mum and her class mates in first year secondary, in their lovely brown and yellow uniform, in '58. 😂

DD’s high school uniform is brown with a cream shirt. The blazer is also striped. Not private school, but Catholic girls convent school. The single school uniform supplier must be making a fortune 😩

Gumley House?

Gumley House?

Yep

No brown uniforms round here (west cornwall) that I can think of. Secondary schools seem to be dark blazers (black or navy, with tartan skirts) the same as the private schools. Primary schools are blue, green or red with grey shorts / skirts, checked summer dresses and either grey or tartan pinafores. My eldest goes to a private secondary school and they wear a dark suit and school tie. Youngest is at a nearby primary and he wears a navy wool jumper (has to be bought from the school), grey shorts, grey socks and school tie. Brown seems a funny colour for a school - I think my mum wore brown at her public school about 60 years ago!

Dawnb19 · 18/05/2025 18:43

I don't think I've ever seen school children wearing brown. When I lived in England our skirts/tights were all navy but apart from that school I went to all the other schools I've seen are grey or black. The same here in Northern Ireland.

Dollmeup · 18/05/2025 18:45

There's definitely none in my area. Never seen it in the shops anywhere either now that I think about it.

Only one I've ever come across was a girls catholic Grammar.

Same here. It's an awful uniform - poo brown and mustard yellow. Absolutely dreadful!

lincoln75 · 18/05/2025 19:16

My sons school had brown jumpers and trousers. It changed in September last year to academy and now has grey trousers/skirts and a different colour jumper. Buying brown shorts and trousers was a real pain if needed quickly

Cazwest6 · 18/05/2025 19:19

There’s quite a lot of brown uniform on eBay
As the girls are allowed to wear black trousers I would ask the school to eventually phase out the brown for black

YellowSubmarine994 · 18/05/2025 20:08

No one at all in brown here. Always seems to be grey for primary and black for secondary

The only school having brown uniform near me was private. It's not normal.

Same here. Just the one private school about eight miles away.

Bearybasket · 18/05/2025 23:25

There’s a couple of primary schools with brown uniforms localish to me. Neither are private but possibly catholic.
I’m in Scotland though and I think coloured uniforms might possibly be more popular here than in england? (for primary anyway)

I do think a brown uniform looks lovely for some reason.

Topseyt123 · 18/05/2025 23:41

None of the schools in our area have a brown uniform. It's not common, I wouldn't think.

It's a shit colour! Even worse than the hated bottle green of my former secondary school!

Laurmolonlabe · 19/05/2025 08:20

Brown uniform has never been very common, I'm surprised supermarkets ever stocked it. I went to 6 different schools with a uniform, only one of them was brown.

Islandgirl68 · 19/05/2025 11:31

@Nametobechanged there is a school where I live that is brown and yellow. When they were having a new school built the school community were asked if they would like to keep the uniform or choose a new one. They chose to keep the old uniform. But not many schools here have that colour. And here we do not have to wear the logo uniform you can buy your uniform in the supermarkets or M&S if they sell your school colours.

Brown? No, I'd say that's very, very uncommon. I've worked in schools for 30 years and the only one I know of was a local private prep school in Buckinghamshire when I was a kid. Theirs isn't brown any more either.

I was coming on to post about the same school.
My DS was the last year to wear the brown when he was in reception or year one and he is 29 this year so they must have changed to blue and gold 25 years ago!

I liked the tradition of the brown but things like getting brown school shoes was def a challenge!!

Oblongofdreams · 19/05/2025 11:42

I can think of 2 with identical uniforms - brown jumper / cardi, brown skirt or pinafore, yellow & brown tie (one in the neighbourhood where I grew up, and one which my own 3 kids went to).
My youngest left 7 years ago but when we were there, you could get brown skirts in M&S, Asda, and a local independent uniform shop.

whatsappdoc · 19/05/2025 11:59

DDs went to the East Herts single sex one when it was a plain brown blazer and ankle length brown kilt which was well liked by the students. Then they changed to an A line short skirt and now they have some god-awful yellow edged lapels on the blazer. Apparently if you want to wear trousers they have to be made to measure from a single supplier. This is a state comprehensive, I’ve heard the HT is moving on so maybe the uniform will be dragged at long last into the 21st century.

Maddy70 · 19/05/2025 13:01

I can't remember ever seeing school uniform in brown

SandandSky · 19/05/2025 15:51

I am 32 and have never seen a child in a brown school uniform in my life.

Awaywiththefairies078 · 19/05/2025 18:38

I wore a brown uniform in secondary in Deptford, London. I liked it. That was 30 years ago. The school still has brown uniform. There are a couple of schools in london with it

Meadowfinch · 19/05/2025 18:41

OP, I can only think of one school that wears brown near us, and they are a small independent.

It's getting harder to find navy too. M&S favour black or grey.

CruCru · 20/05/2025 07:42

The thing is, if there’s a colour that you avoid as an adult, it might as well be brown. School uniform isn’t meant to be mega stylish.

minnienono · 20/05/2025 07:51

Asda stock brown. If sizes are not available give in a couple more weeks, they will be awaiting stock for the new year now. Online is more reliable for rarer items, I used to order all the uniform for pick up as easier than trying to find specific sizes in store.
