To think that plenty of schools still have brown uniform?

My DC’s school has brown skirts/ pinafores for the girls uniform. They can wear black trousers if they want but most of the girls prefer skirts.

Asda seems to be the only big shop that’s selling them. M&S, Next, John Lewis, etc have all stopped making brown uniform.

We can’t be the only school with this issue?

None round here at all. All the local schools have blue or green tops with black or grey bottoms.
Brown would be a nightmare I imagine, especially if only one supermarket sells it. Do the school do second hand sales of uniform? I got most of my children's jumpers from there (instead of spending £30 on one jumper from the uniform shop).

I had brown uniform as a kid. The local urusuline has brown uniform with stripes on blazer

In our area there are two with brown jumpers but I think trousers/skirts can be black. Others here are all black plus various colour jumpers.

Mrsttcno1 · 17/05/2025 11:45

I’ve actually never known any school where we are do brown, so I wouldn’t expect to see it in shops here!

Beautifulspringsunshine · 17/05/2025 11:45

None here. It’s usually just private schools.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/05/2025 11:45

I wonder if the Catholic schools with them, were founded by people/ orders with a Carmelite tradition. As they wear brown habits.

DD1 is starting primary this year and of the 9 we visited, the only one with a brown uniform was a Catholic school.

Catwoman8 · 17/05/2025 11:48

I have never seen any school wearing brown uniform, nor do I ever see it in shops 😳

It's always grey , blue or black , with various different coloured polo shirts/jumpers.

PonyPatter44 · 17/05/2025 11:49

My old primary school in north London had a brown and yellow uniform. We had MANY yellow gingham summer dresses in our house! I've just looked on their website and they have now changed to a black and yellow uniform, which is much easier and cheaper for parents to source, but does make the kids look like a swarm of giant bumblebees.

sesquipedalian · 17/05/2025 11:57

Round here, in terms of tops, it’s red, blue, green, black, grey, with either grey or black skirts/trousers. There’s one local (state) primary that has what is described on the school website as a “jade” top, which obviously you wouldn’t be able to get anywhere other than the school shop, but I don’t know of a single school in the area, either state or private, that wears brown skirts or trousers.

IwasDueANameChange · 17/05/2025 12:02

Theres a local primary near me with brown & yellow but all the others are grey trousers/skirts/pinafores.

Imnutty · 17/05/2025 12:04

I think schools should band uniforms and let kids go in what they want.
Be cheaper for the parents and alot less hassle.
And everyone would be more comfy.

IwasDueANameChange · 17/05/2025 12:05

Ooh i take mine back the school near me is no longer brown trousers - grey also an option.

I never really get the argument that non uniform is "more comfy". As an overweight person, stretchy clothes like leggings and joggers are only "more comfy" when you are overweight so waistbands are tight. Trousers, polo shirts and sweatshirts are not uncomfortable. Actually my kids school is shirts/blouses and its great, they wash and dry reall well and are cooler in summer. The kids are perfectly happy in them.

x2boys · 17/05/2025 12:08

I know if one school local to me that has a brown uniform ,I think it s a paticularly, ugly uniform
I have noticed schools introducing tartan skirts ,that must be nightmare you wouldn't be able to buy generically from supermarkets

WhenYouSayNothingAtAll · 17/05/2025 12:09

Ebay sells loads if you want more choice/plan ahead -skirts, trousers , pinafores and the summer yellow gingham dresses and playsuits.I ended up using them more than actual shops. Quality was a bit of a mix. I still resent M&S when they stopped selling the “good” brown school tights.

JaneGrint · 17/05/2025 12:12

I’ve only come across one school in my area with a brown uniform - a primary school with brown trousers / skirts / jumpers and yellow polo shirts - but they’ve recently changed their uniform away from that.

Almost all the local schools I’ve seen have some variation of black / grey trousers / skirts and white / blue shirts / polo shirts. There’s a bit more variation with the colour of jumpers / blazers but the school I mentioned earlier is the only one I’ve ever seen with brown jumpers.

DrDameKatyDeniseInExile · 17/05/2025 12:17

There’s two primary schools here that wear brown - one with yellow polo shirts and the other white. But there’s also one that wears green. That must also be tricky. When mine were little they could wear a gingham summer dress in either yellow or lilac. M and S used to do them then. I liked when the different schools were more distinct but if shops don’t stock the colours then it must be a real headache.

NebulousWhistler · 17/05/2025 12:18

I think Channing in N London (g, private) is still brown as St Philomenas in Carshalton (g, Catholic comp).

Both hideous.

alcoholnightmare · 17/05/2025 12:20

None locally in the city I live in

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 17/05/2025 12:20

Like @TheNightingalesStarling , one near me (secondary) is brown and yellow. Absolutely dreadful.

Pigletin · 17/05/2025 12:20

There is a school in our area that had brown jumpers with bright yellow polo shirts (a very deep yellow). Absolutely hideous. They have now changed to blue. There is also a secondary school with black and yellow…also not great!

MaloryJones · 17/05/2025 12:21

Think brown is dated somewhat OP

My secondary school was brown uniform (until the lower sixth where we voted for grey instead of brown).. I left there in 1981

CatsDintCare · 17/05/2025 12:54

Never seen a brown school uniform and we've lived lots of places. Someone mentioned purple, I think everywhere we have lived a school has had a purple uniform, mainly state too.
