To think that plenty of schools still have brown uniform?

My DC’s school has brown skirts/ pinafores for the girls uniform. They can wear black trousers if they want but most of the girls prefer skirts.

Asda seems to be the only big shop that’s selling them. M&S, Next, John Lewis, etc have all stopped making brown uniform.

We can’t be the only school with this issue?

I frequently go to places in the UK and stay for 2-3 days which includes visiting museums etc. As I do this during the week, I see school children in the museums or walking to/from school.

I have seen primary schools children wearing (different schools btw)
. Dark green trousers/skirts
. Baby pink shirts and blouses
. Purple sweatshirts
. Blue sweatshirts with a red banner going through the badge

I bet they are all difficult to buy outside the supplier.

The worse uniform I have seen was ox blood blazers (think Sainsbury’s uniform) with mustard stripes. Baby blue shirts with ties with black, red and pink stripes

My school had a brown uniform but that was 30 years ago and then changed it about 20 years ago because everybody absolutely hated it.
I don't know of any other school that had a brown uniform in our local area.

I'd say it's rare that a school would have a brown uniform.

Same for me and I hated it too.

TimSamandLulu · 17/05/2025 13:35

My kids’ school has brown uniform (small Catholic state primary). They are changing to a different colour next academic year because brown is now very difficult to source, especially since M&S stopped selling it.

MimiGC · 17/05/2025 13:49

My children’s primary school had (and still has) brown uniforms, and there’s another one in the next town too, so not unusual round here. I sometimes got brown skirts online. EBay had school uniform suppliers. Obviously you can’t try them on though…

Whiteflowerscreed · 17/05/2025 13:50

There’s a catholic secondary school near us with brown uniform but I think it’s all school branded stuff

We have purple sweatshirts at our dc school. They all come from a local supplier, not too bad to get. Polos and trousers and skirts all from
supermarket so that’s okay

I wonder if the Catholic schools with them, were founded by people/ orders with a Carmelite tradition. As they wear brown habits.

Ours is brown because of St Anthony.

Fairislesweater · 17/05/2025 14:45

Google says George at Asda sells brown uniform. Might have to order in for click and collect I imagine.

I know of a couple of schools, one is a girls convent and the other a private prep.

Nametobechanged · 17/05/2025 14:45

My children’s school is Catholic, I didn’t know brown was a Catholic thing 😂

I haven't seen a brown uniform since I was a child. The school near me which had a bottle green pinafore/skirt swapped for a grey as the green was getting to hard to find. The head even lobbied the local supermarket managers and wrote to their buyers, but she gave up and swapped to more available colours.

myturf · 17/05/2025 14:49

My high school was/is brown and yellow (or gold, as they called it). They've changed the uniform since I left and the skirts are now checked/kind of like kilts, I think it looks really nice. But I've never seen another school with a brown uniform and I was surprised to see so many on this thread, so definitely unusual!

modgepodge · 17/05/2025 15:08

I’ve taught in tens of schools (supply teacher) in two large areas of the country and never come across a brown uniform.

my mums friend when ie as growing up lived in Scotland and her kids went to a school which had brown and pink jumpers - either brown with a pink logo or vice versa. Pink summer dresses too. Very very unusual!

I think the catholic schools often have more ‘out there’ uniform choices. The one near me is fairly standard bottle green but the y6 girls only are allowed to wear kilts!

Snorlaxo · 17/05/2025 15:11

They are not usual round here either. Black or grey skirts for primary, black for secondary.

We live in an area with lots of different colour polos in primary my kids went to a white polo school but round here we also have green, blue and red too.

MojoMoon · 17/05/2025 15:14

Just checked with my mum as was on the phone to her and can confirm the Catholic girls school down the road is still a brown uniform. With a yellow shirt.

You have to buy it from one of two specialist uniform shops in the town.

QueenOfSwedenRose · 17/05/2025 15:19

I can only think of SS Peter and Paul primary in Mitcham and st philomenas Carshalton.

ChungusFungus · 17/05/2025 15:20

Reasonably common in Glasgow, always the catholic schools for some reason. We’ve got brown with yellow polo shirts/shirts and then brown with blue polo shirts/shirts round the corner.

Usually available in our local Asda in addition to the specialist uniform shops.

Imicola · 17/05/2025 15:20

Yes we have brown uniform and it's getting annoying...

LoveTKO · 17/05/2025 15:37

Two I know of locally. Looks quite nice. Black is very boring.

Ddakji · 17/05/2025 15:42

The only school I can think of near me with a brown uniform is the Catholic secondary school. My mother went to a catholic school and wore brown, didn’t know it was a Catholic thing!

If it’s that hard to find you should mention it to the school and encourage others to do so as well. I don’t see the point of uniform in primary so if they’re going to do it, it shouldn’t be hard to source.

I have just checked and my old school in Hertfordshire still has a brown uniform.

My first school had a brown uniform. I just checked to see if it still had, and found that it closed in 2010!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 17/05/2025 15:57

I used to work in a primary school near me that had brown uniform until they were academised and it changed. There's still a secondary school near me that has brown uniform.

I had brown uniform with cream shirt at my grammar school, back in the 80s.

None of these schools are/were catholic!

amooseymoomum · 17/05/2025 16:03

the now defunct grammar school I was talking about not only the colour but the style seemed way out of date, the school finished early 1980s.
right through to leaving they had to wear the following;
brown pinafore dress with a yellow sash
a nylon awful blouse
a brown blazer with yellow trimming
brown shoes with fawn socks
all the pe kit was yellow

EllieQ · 17/05/2025 16:33

One of the Catholic primary schools near me has a brown uniform with yellow shirts, and yellow gingham dresses in the summer. The other Catholic primary is grey with green tops/ green gingham dresses. There is a Carmelite convent here, so perhaps that is the connection as a PP suggested. The catholic secondary school has a navy blue uniform.

The other local primary schools are all grey with red/ blue/ navy blue tops/ dresses, which seem to be easy to find.

I only remember seeing one brown uniform ever and it was in Dublin (ankle length, brown skirts)

That's quite a tricky colour to find I would say.

Beaufort Loreto High?
