To think that plenty of schools still have brown uniform?

My DC’s school has brown skirts/ pinafores for the girls uniform. They can wear black trousers if they want but most of the girls prefer skirts.

Asda seems to be the only big shop that’s selling them. M&S, Next, John Lewis, etc have all stopped making brown uniform.

We can’t be the only school with this issue?

None locally. I can think of one about 20 minutes away and its distinctive because it is unusual for the area.

most schools are blue/black/grey for trousers and skirts.

RoosterPotato · 17/05/2025 10:54

I don’t see any children in brown uniform in my wider area. But if it’s really problematic I suggest you speak to the school. That said, my school required us to wear specific uniform purchased from their own shop. Having ASDA as an option seems okay

The only school having brown uniform near me was private. It's not normal.

Octavia64 · 17/05/2025 10:55

Grey or black is more normal

CruCru · 17/05/2025 10:57

I can think of two schools with brown uniform. It’s probably a bit of a nuisance when they rip their trousers - no nipping to John Lewis to get more.

NancyGreens · 17/05/2025 10:57

I only remember seeing one brown uniform ever and it was in Dublin (ankle length, brown skirts)

That's quite a tricky colour to find I would say.

Hallywally · 17/05/2025 10:57

Can’t ever remember seeing a brown school uniform.

TheNightingalesStarling · 17/05/2025 10:58

Its tricky enough to find navy or grey. Brown is not mainstream.

( A local school was nicknamed Rotten Bananas due to their brown and yellow uniform. Teens are cruel.)

Marmite27 · 17/05/2025 10:58

I can’t get the skirts at Asda now! I’ve been reduced to asking the outgoing year 6 parents with girls that I know for old uniform

HuffleMyPuffle · 17/05/2025 10:58

Grey or black bottoms with green or blue summer dresses is usually around here. With the odd purple or the private school's tartan

It’s a bit off topic but I love it when girls get to wear ankle length skirts. I remember buying a long skirt for school (in the days before they got stricter on the uniform) and I could sit cross legged on the school playing fields.

Don't think I've ever seen kids in brown uniform or sold in shops local to me. Most common is navy, followed by black, grey or even red.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 17/05/2025 11:01

Brown? No, I'd say that's very, very uncommon. I've worked in schools for 30 years and the only one I know of was a local private prep school in Buckinghamshire when I was a kid. Theirs isn't brown any more either.

SoManyDandelions · 17/05/2025 11:02

Primary or secondary?

No brown uniforms in my neck of the woods. The private girls school has green tartan I think. But all the state schools have grey or black trousers, one secondary has navy.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 17/05/2025 11:02

Only one I've ever come across was a girls catholic Grammar.

Exitpursuedbygeese · 17/05/2025 11:03

I was about to say @NancyGreens Ireland loves a bit of brown uniform!

Also a lot of schools in NI which would have had shorter skirts have moved to longer ones and trouser options presumably due to potential upskirting.

Whinge · 17/05/2025 11:05

I've never seen a brown uniform.

Surely the fact that so many shops are no longer selling it is an indication that it's not a popular colour?

Same here. I have only ever come across one school that had a brown uniform, and that is no longer brown these days.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 17/05/2025 11:05

My school did until about 20 years ago, but changed to blue. They changed cos everyone hated it, but as it was a private school you just got the gear through the school supplier. For state schools I think it’s an unusual colour

Dahliasrule · 17/05/2025 11:07

I have just checked and my old school in Hertfordshire still has a brown uniform.

MereNoelle · 17/05/2025 11:07

There aren’t any I can think of near here.

BeCyanSloth · 17/05/2025 11:08

I’ve not seen a brown uniform in years my oldest 2 boys went to a school with brown uniform and yellow polo shirts but they changed the uniform when my eldest was in yr 6 that was 16 years ago
not seen a brown uniform since
even then it was easier to just get it from our local school uniform shop rather than M&S John Lewis etc

Annascaul · 17/05/2025 11:09

There are definitely brown uniforms in London. Does your school not have an official supplier, op?

onedayiwillbehappy · 17/05/2025 11:10

My daughter’s old primary school (left last year) wore brown and yellow(gold!). We used to buy from m&s . Asda and the uniform shop. It is a shame Marks has stopped selling brown as their skirts used to be good quality . Maybe try a local uniform shop .

butteredhorseradish · 17/05/2025 11:11

My school had a brown uniform but that was 30 years ago and then changed it about 20 years ago because everybody absolutely hated it.
I don't know of any other school that had a brown uniform in our local area.

I'd say it's rare that a school would have a brown uniform.
