To think that plenty of schools still have brown uniform?

My DC’s school has brown skirts/ pinafores for the girls uniform. They can wear black trousers if they want but most of the girls prefer skirts.

Asda seems to be the only big shop that’s selling them. M&S, Next, John Lewis, etc have all stopped making brown uniform.

We can’t be the only school with this issue?

Beaufort Loreto High?

Yes! My cousin went there

There are at least 2 schools in my borough that have brown uniforms. Interesting what you say about the girls being allowed to wear trousers but most of them prefer skirts. When I was at secondary school back in the late 1970s,the girls were not allowed to wear trousers and there was an ongoing (unsuccessful) campaign for us to be allowed to wear trousers,in the winter at least. How times have changed!

We wore brown skirts or pinafores at my state Catholic primary school. Quite a few pinafores were homemade. We could wear yellow gingham summer dresses, which I liked, but my mum usually found brown gingham ones for me. Trousers and shorts were grey.

Googled brown school skirts and got this www.schooluniform247.co.uk/School-Uniforms-by-Colour/Brown-School-Uniform/Brown-School-Skirts

My DD’s school uniform is brown and can only be purchased from a particular shop. The blazer alone costs £120 and it is a state school. Option for trousers is brown again expensive and from school uniform shop. It has another colour going through the uniform which I don’t want to disclose but I have grown to like this traditional looking uniform, it’s smart and unusual.

I went to a school once where the uniform stipulated that we all wear brown, lace-up shoes! (although skirts and trousers were grey)

My daughter has a brown school uniform. M&S sell the pinafore dresses as do Asda

TorturedParentsDepartment · 17/05/2025 17:43

In 20 years of teaching the only school I came across with it (and it was bloody ghastly) was a small private school that's long since closed down.

Thankfully my kids' secondary does absolutely minimal specific stuff - the tie is the only real one, and the blazer is the same for the whole academy trust so there's loads around second hand, and the rest is supermarket-easy

The only school having brown uniform near me was private. It's not normal.

My mum's secondary school uniform was brown pinafore and cardigan with yellow blouse and brown and yellow tie, but this was a convent school in the sixties. Last I checked the Catholic primary school in our neighbourhood had brown jumper and skirt/trousers with mint green shirt/blouse, which I always thought looked odd. Much preferred the burgundy and grey of the non dom school my children went to. I agree that brown is rather uncommon.

It's about to be bang on trend and the new classic according to the stylists.

Growing on SE London, I'm sure the schools were competing for the most outlandish uniform (although no striped blazers)... it seems to be a lot tamer now (in part due to Harris taking over many schools...). Uniform is definitely more affordable now!

I think Harris uniforms look quite poncey! 😁

Harris Orpington had burgundies blazers, kilts and floppy bow ties for the girls in the 90s/00s.

I can only think of SS Peter and Paul primary in Mitcham and st philomenas Carshalton.

SS Peter and Paul is the one I was referencing too!

It's something I noticed when we moved here: Where I went to school all schools pretty much (at primary) had the coloured skirts/pinafores for the uniform. Wearing grey was generally not done - any child wearing grey stood out.

Round here, none of the primary schools use anything but grey for pinafores and skirts.

However eBay has plenty of brown skirts etc (new)

AlannaOfTrebond · 17/05/2025 19:46

I've only known two schools with brown uniforms.

My primary (small co-ed private), which was brown jumper and skirt with yellow gingham dress in the summer. The second was an all girls private convent, brown skirt and blazer with fawn jumper and pink and white summer dress.

Both schools are long gone.

Mokel · 17/05/2025 20:02

My parents were thinking about me going to a different school. Saw the uniform- brown and light grey stripy blazer with mustard coloured blouse. Can’t remember if the trousers were grey or brown.

ilovepixie · 17/05/2025 20:03

A primary school near me is brown skirts/trousers and yellow polo shirts.

londongirl12 · 17/05/2025 20:04

We don’t have any brown uniforms in my fairly large town. But in the next town there is. Why a school would choose such an awful colour for a uniform is beyond me.

TheFormidableMrsC · 17/05/2025 20:08

I don’t know of a single school from childhood upwards that has brown uniform. I’m 55. Absolutely none in my area of North Herts. I’ve never seen any brown uniform anywhere. Apart from Brownies.

MidnightPatrol · 17/05/2025 20:12

The only school I know that had a brown uniform had to give it up, as the parents hated it so much.

Trying to find brown tights and school shoes was a bigger chore every year.

bigmix · 17/05/2025 20:17

We have a local selective school with brown uniform- can only buy the skirts and blazers from two retailers though

FcukTheDay · 17/05/2025 20:17

My daughters school has a brown uniform but the skirts are embroidered with the schools logo. They have to be purchased from a particular school uniform shop.

I'm still traumatised by 5 years in brown polyester and I left school 35 years ago. I drove past my old school recently and noticed they haven't changed the god awful uniform yet.

GotToWearShades · 17/05/2025 20:26

Brown is quite unusual. There's an academy trust secondary that's changed to light grey near here and it's been said that even light grey is hard to get. Looks awful too - pale jumper and trousers on secondary aged kids looks very primary school
