To think that plenty of schools still have brown uniform?

My DC’s school has brown skirts/ pinafores for the girls uniform. They can wear black trousers if they want but most of the girls prefer skirts.

Asda seems to be the only big shop that’s selling them. M&S, Next, John Lewis, etc have all stopped making brown uniform.

We can’t be the only school with this issue?

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a brown school uniform.

Nametobechanged · 17/05/2025 11:14

I had no idea we were so rare, the lack of shops selling brown should’ve been a hint though!

It’s a primary school. Brown skirts and cardigans/ jumpers and yellow gingham summer dresses.

Finding stock at Asda isn’t easy tbh, we have a school uniform shop locally but they charge £20 a pinafore!

I grew up near 2 brown uniform schools. None in this area that I know of and I've thought through a bunch of schools. Grey trousers are most common with navy for PE; one school has green joggers, one purple and there are a range of shorts colours. Then shorts, jumpers and tops vary for PE and normal days: navy, green, blue, red, purple. Tshirts white, yellow, green or red. Girl dresses are all checked with white: navy, red, green. Combo colours vary between the schools so one is yellow + green, one yellow + navy, 1 red + green, 1 white + red, 2 white + navy, 1 white + purple. Not sure if the colour changes on PE days are just there to annoy parents.

GRex · 17/05/2025 11:17

I imagine the local purple school is even trickier to find than brown.

Starlightstarbright4 · 17/05/2025 11:17

We have one school near us in brown . It’s a catholic school but the majority of are not.

ravenclaworslytherin · 17/05/2025 11:19

There is a school near me that is brown jumper/cardigan and states brown or grey pinafore/skirt and grey trousers/shorts.

I remember going for a teaching job there about 15 years ago and it was all brown pinafores skirts etc. I'm guessing they are phasing the brown out now though if it's harder to find

Newdoggo · 17/05/2025 11:20

Brown Secondary in my town in England

oviraptor21 · 17/05/2025 11:22

Quite a variety of colours round here including brown.
My old primary school was and still is brown.
It's certainly not a majority colour though which is why non-specialist shops won't cater for it (or green/burgundy which are other colours locally).
Specialist uniform shops will but obviously more expensive.
Can you persuade the school to allow black skirts - quote the government guidance on affordability https://www.gov.uk/school-uniform

School uniform

Schools set school uniform policy and must make their uniform policy. You should talk to the school if you think your child is being discriminated against.

My sister went to a Catholic primary school many many years ago that had a brown and yellow uniform, with a bespoke yellow school dress for summer. It became a hospice instead, so the school closed. I couldn’t inherit the brown uniform but my primary school colours happened to be blue and yellow so I inherited the fancy dresses when all the other girls were in gingham 😫

Other than that, I can’t think of any brown uniform schools other than a grammar school sone of our local kids are bussed to

My old high school was bad enough with bottle green skirts, which was a hangover from their grammar school days. It still has the green skirts which you buy from school but trousers are black which can be bought anywhere.

Bloatstoat · 17/05/2025 11:24

We're in the same situation, it's very annoying - I have found some online shops that do shorts for DS as couldn't get them anywhere locally! Summer dresses are blue check though so that is simple at least. Brown tights are the most annoying thing I find as I can only get them in John Lewis which is expensive.

elusiveemz · 17/05/2025 11:25

I've done supply teaching in both the UK and Wales, so taught in countless schools, and I've never come across a school with brown uniform.

NancyGreens · 17/05/2025 10:57

I only remember seeing one brown uniform ever and it was in Dublin (ankle length, brown skirts)

That's quite a tricky colour to find I would say.

Yeah it was common enough in Ireland but not so much even here any more. We had owned local primary that had brown and yellow. They changed last year to black and grey.

amooseymoomum · 17/05/2025 11:28

years ago our local grammar school had brown and yellow but they merged with other schools so the uniform was scrapped.
there is a private school round here that has a green uniform but have not seen brown for a long time the green uniform is a dark bottle green which is unusual

AusBoundDD · 17/05/2025 11:30

Only one school in our entire city has brown uniform - I feel so sorry for the girls!! It’s awful looking and so outdated.

When did Wales leave the UK? 🤔

ShodAndShadySenators · 17/05/2025 11:33

I was considering sending to DS to a private school near us, the brown uniform didn't put me off but I did think it was unattractive. The majority of schools around our way use typical (and pleasant) colours for their uniforms.

One local secondary school had striped blazers which was... interesting and presumably meant you couldn't buy a standard coloured blazer from supermarkets and just buy their logo badge and stick it on, which most secondaries offered as an option. So that seemed a bit excluding imo. They have changed it now though, I wonder if there was pressure about costs?

ChandrilanDiscoDroid · 17/05/2025 11:35

There's a state primary very near me in W London with brown uniform. Don't know where they get it, but all the local schools do sell uniform through a chain of suppliers with branches locally.

FabuIous · 17/05/2025 11:35

We have one state primary in our city which is brown and yellow.

Yes, this was when I was at school in the late nineties

FancyCatSlave · 17/05/2025 11:36

No brown in our (small) county. There was 1 brown uniform where I lived growing up, we called it the poo school 💩😳

I’d say it is pretty rare @Nametobechanged so understand it has a limited market.

It’s almost all grey or black here.

TheNightingalesStarling · 17/05/2025 11:39

Growing on SE London, I'm sure the schools were competing for the most outlandish uniform (although no striped blazers)... it seems to be a lot tamer now (in part due to Harris taking over many schools...). Uniform is definitely more affordable now!

Toddlerteaplease · 17/05/2025 11:40

I have only ever seen one school that wears brown. I always think it’s depressing.

WelcomeToMonkeyTown · 17/05/2025 11:42

My old school uniform was brown and it was hideous. They changed it to a really nice turquoise/navy just as I left 😂

SugarMiceInTheRain · 17/05/2025 11:42

Nope, have lived and worked in several different areas and cities and the only brown uniform I recall was from my childhood (35 years ago!) and was a private school.

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 17/05/2025 11:43

There's a senior school in my area that has a brown and yellow uniform. It looks really outdated.
