MIL trying on my engagement ring

Onering · 11/05/2025 10:38

Strained relationship. Recently got engaged. I took the engagement ring off for a second since I was doing gardening, came back to find MIL wearing my ring saying how pretty it is. She had been going on about how much she liked it before but to put it on without my permission seems invasive.

She wore it and put it to the light to see the diamond sparkle and commented on how nice it looked.

Aibu about being annoyed from this? Maybe my rocky relationship with her is skewering this for me. My ring now feels tainted because someone else has worn it and being someone I don't have a good relationship with... But again that could be me being ott.

personally, I wouldn’t pay any mind to it

If you have a rocky relationship now,why on earth get married?

I'm not sticking up for the op at all, but I don't believe she's going to marry her MIL.

I just want to say, when I said I believe in bad energy/karma it's not to the point where I believe Spiritual cleanses/being religious/bad eye. Simply just that I've seen a lot of what comes around goes around. I've also had a lot of personal experience with things happening which seemed to be cause and effect from something. So I'm just hyper sensitive to things jinxing luck. No that doesn't mean I'm going to go waving the sage about or bless my ring under a full moon 🤨

However there are plenty of people that DO believe in this stuff, and lots of people's attitudes on here come across mocking for it. That is completely rude and close minded. Let's be respectful of the fact that some people take that as seriously as believing in a God and not try to ridicule anyone for it.

Perhaps you are the bad energy in this instance, and some of the negative responses you are receiving on here is simply the effect of that?

FigTreeInEurope · 11/05/2025 13:08

Who does she think she is.. Gollum? I feel less strongly about engagement rings, but a wedding ring is a symbol of a sacred bond, and i wouldn't be happy about anyone else wearing my wedding ring. I can understand why it feels tainted. I suspect reinforcing your boundries will be a full-time job with this one. The world needs a spouse based version of NATO to keep these pesky MIL's at bay. In the ancient Wiccan tradition, women would place their rings on a piece of rose quartz, and repeat "fuck you mother in law" in Gallic, three times whilst smudging with burning mugwort, and listening to Clannad. Try that maybe?

Welshwhales · 11/05/2025 13:11

Maybe a bit annoying but without your mother in law your fiancée wouldn't be here !

notacooldad · 11/05/2025 13:11

I dont know if it's been asked, but how would you feel if the person, apart from your husband, that you loved the most did this?
If your best friend tried it on and said, oh, this is so nice! What do you think of it on me?:

Your best friend/ loved one, whoever, maybe have do e bad shit rhY you don't know about. What about their ' negative energy'

Namechangedforgoodreasons · 11/05/2025 13:18

Onering · 11/05/2025 10:41

@Upsetbetty I believe in bad karma/energy. So if someone I have had bad times with tries on something that is of high significance to me, I then feel it's got negative connotations.

I believe that is extremely silly.

RedCrochetedWigFace · 11/05/2025 13:19

She was out of order trying it on without your permission and I think most people would know that. I think you are being overly dramatic though.

I think that things can carry energy too. I don't think it happens from a brief wearing though. There is the chance that other people tried on the ring in the shop or that the person making it/handling it also has bad energy and you don't seem to feel that would taint it.

I think your associations are more powerful and you are the only person who can change that. Try to see ot as her being complimentary about it and enjoying it.

KaleQueen · 11/05/2025 13:20

Onering · 11/05/2025 12:28

@KaleQueen yes that bit does get to me. Waiting for me to come back in from the garden so I'd see her with it on. Felt very much so in your face

I think you’re getting a hard time on here. I know exactly the type of person you’re talking about. (Not my MIL may I add) but I have seen people like this and they do these things to get a rise out of people. So I don’t think you’re being a diva at all

Whitecleanoverneat · 11/05/2025 13:22

Mine tried to try mine on too. It wouldn't go on her finger so she sniffily said 'you must have very slim fingers, your ring is tiny!'

I don't, she thinks I'm overweight (we're about the same) but was clearly shocked my big fat fingers are smaller than hers.

I wouldn't have felt it was tainted, had it fit her, but I did think it was a weird thing to do.

Mine also has big problems with boundaries, being over bearing and generally over stepping.

Alwaystired23 · 11/05/2025 13:22

Get the sage on it and put it under a full moon.

That is not how karma works ffs. Grow up.

Zone2NorthLondon · 11/05/2025 13:24

Bad energies? You’ve got that woohoo disposition and likely you’ll be perpetually in emotional turmoil about something. All your life

BeaRightThere · 11/05/2025 13:27

FFS. It's a ring. She liked it and tried it on. Grow up.

Vibungitout · 11/05/2025 13:29

I'm like that too.
If I buy something and something bad or negative happens on that particular day, even not directly connected to me for example a celebrity dies, I get rid if the item, chuck it, return or sell so it doesn't have the connection to it that day when it happened, even if I love the item. It just has to go..
In this case I would get rid of the ring if it gives you negative mil vibes. It's forever..

Zone2NorthLondon · 11/05/2025 13:30

Strained relationship? Why are yiu getting engaged to a man when it’s strained. You should be exultant and in love. Is this an engagement to save the strained relationship eg if we make a big gesture that will sort the underlying strains

TizerorFizz · 11/05/2025 13:31

I’d send it to an exorcist.

Maray1967 · 11/05/2025 13:32

Onering · 11/05/2025 10:52

@WimpoleHat I guess my thoughts are if our was relationship good then it would have been harmless. But we aren't really like that. So I've taken it as another act of over stepping rather than oh she must just really like it.

Personally even if I liked someone's engagement/wedding ring I would never think to put it on my own finger! But maybes that's just me...

Edited

No, you have good manners and you know that to try someone else’s jewellery on without permission- let alone an engagement ring - is wholly unacceptable.

But just give it a good clean and put it on. It doesn’t have any ‘karma’. Tell your DP that you’re not impressed by what she did. He should have a word with her.

My MIL has never tried on my rings, not in 30 years, and I wouldn’t dream of trying on hers.

Please elaborate. Get rid of item as it was purchased on day something iffy happened?
Do you have a value tariff
Lipstick, Gone
Washing machine, nah you can stay

I have read a lot of nonsense on mn, but this is most unnecessary and daft by a big measure

Well you need to let that go, because it's rubbish.

Life must be very very difficult for you. Honestly, you should seek out a good CBT therapist.
By the way, something bad or negative happens to someone in the world every second of every, single day so this thought process is completely illogical.

Its just me being stupidly superstitious about stuff like that.
I wish to be so carefree I wouldn't get bothered about it.. I guess it's just some mad ocd kind..I can't control.

Jigsawasaurus · 11/05/2025 13:41

Get one of those ring necklaces and then pop it on there rather than leaving it on the side for MIL

Totally weird for someone to do that and I definitely feel she's done it to annoy. However she's sneaky because if you raise it, you can sound very sensitive and the woo won't help either. I'd be far more concerned about how she might be at your wedding.

My first engagement ring was antique. That marriage ended in divorce. My second engagement ring was also antique. We've been happy married for 22 years. Karma/ bad energy from someone else wearing something is nonsense.
