Sir Tom Cruise 🙄

Tom Cruise is getting a Knighthood for services to the film industry!

I don’t think I’ve seen him in anything for 20/30 years!

Why are we rewarding a man who earns millions just for pretending to be someone else and speaking the words that someone else has written and who is instructed where to stand, sit, walk and move around?

A man who has not seen his daughter since she was 7 years old nearly 12 years ago!

Then I suggest you educate yourself on the literacy device of rhetorical questions. It appears you don't understand its application.

I absolutely do. I suggest you educate yourself on reality.

  1. Why would an American get a knighthood?
  1. Why would an American get a knighthood?

One of the above is a rhetorical question. One is an actual question. Do explain to us all how to tell the difference, in a text forum
We'll wait.

Now who's been reading the Daily Mail?

I’m sorry, what?

DM weren’t the only ones who published that story hun x

I see nothing wrong with honouring actors - several British actors have received this honour.

I'd object because of the cult he's a prominent member of, and I can think of a lot of other prominent actors of many nationalities who should get a knighthood before I'd put him on a list.

dottiedodah · 09/05/2025 02:03

He is an amazing actor. One of my favourites.also a fully qualified pilot .stuntman as well. His private life is his own.lots of who?with knighthood and why.well deserved Tom

I didn’t know it was possible either

It’s honorary like Sir Bob G

Tho I think TC lives here so maybe has citizenship

dontcomeatme · 09/05/2025 02:47

pinkyredrose · 08/05/2025 18:41

My thoughts exactly.

It's called an honorary knighthood. Angelina Jolie received an honorary damehood from the Queen. They are not entitled to use the term Sir or Dame, it's more of a big pat on the back from the UK.

You don't get to call yourself 'Sir' but you can put KBE after your name. Similar to Bob Geldof.

I can't stand him as an actor but he does, as others have said, bring work to the UK and he has a house here too.

BadAmbassador · 09/05/2025 09:01

He’s still making films! Making one in the UK right now! (Or has been)

BadAmbassador · 09/05/2025 09:04

Two films actually - not including the new Mission Impossible. So he is a strong force in filmmaking in the UK.

aylis · 09/05/2025 09:25

Did anyone ever read the book Movie Star by Lizzie Pepper, by Hilary Liftin? It's supposedly based on Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. It's a lot of fun and some of it you could easily see being real 😆

noblegiraffe · 09/05/2025 10:15

Super excited about the upcoming Mission Impossible film, the last one was great. The bit where Tom Cruise rode a motorbike off the edge of a mountain was incredible especially seeing as he actually did it! He has promised lots of groundbreaking stunts in the next one too.

i Don’t quite agree with this.

My DDad received the OBE a number of years ago. Sadly he’s now got dementia. He had a huge job in public service and worked like a Trojan, up at 5am writing his reports for the day, doing his day job -and attending public meetings in the evenings regularly; most working days were like that for him. It took its toll. The stress for him was immense.

The awards that get the attention in the press are for those who are famous. But there’s a significant number of people who are given awards for genuine hard work , effort and change for the better. I remember his awards ceremony for rewarding the mostly unsung heroes.

’Other Buggers efforts’ was said to me quite a few times when I mentioned my DDad had just received an OBE …

No one said your dad didn't work hard - lots of people who work hard never get any type of acknowledge, honours or otherwise, for the amazing work they do - people who selflessly volunteer for example, who don't receive any type of salary or payment for everything they give back to others. There are certainly people who have received an OBE who wouldn't stand up to close scrutiny - not remotely suggesting your dad is one of these, but it's not a saying that comes out of nowhere is it? A member of my family was offered an MBE and turned it down - they worked hard their whole life too - we just think it's a terrible system that is abused by the rich and powerful. Also we're not fans of E = empire - as per my link to the Benjamin Zephaniah article earlier up the thread.

It’s just an honour, he can’t call himself Sir Tom!

Money talks and BS walks…he generates a lot of employment and tax pounds by filming a lot in the UK. His parenting (or the rumoured lack of ) really has no bearing on these things.

luckylavender · 09/05/2025 15:28

Where us this reported?

I thought I’d heard Bob Geldof referred to as Sir which is honorary. It looks like people do at times.

The honours system is a disgrace. 14 years of tory corruption and cronyism has proved that

ednakenneth · 09/05/2025 18:21

Tom cruise has done several mission in possible films and the last is due to be released at the end of this month. He came to Birmingham to film several scenes and visited the largest scientologist church. He came in on a helicopter.
Don't you remember the pictures when he helped the princess of Wales get up some stairs at a film premiere. She wore long black gloves.
I think he's a great actor and he is supposed to be very nice

TunnocksOrDeath · 09/05/2025 18:47

The only main UK paper reporting this is the Daily Heil, and their evidence for this is that he's getting a BFI award, and someone else who got one once also got a knighthood, so I'd take it with a hefty pinch of salt...
BUT people who are not a citizen of a commonwealth country can receive honorary knighthoods, they can't call themselves "Sir/Dame", but can put the letters after their name. Steven Spielberg, Placido Domingo and Bill Gates all have a KBE, for example.
Tom Cruise's films aren't really my thing, but apparently a lot of the production is in the UK, which creates work for British technicians and people who work at British studios. Mr Spielberg's award was for "services to British film" i.e. a thank-you for keeping so many people here in work.

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 09/05/2025 19:07

I didn’t think non Brits could get a knighthood.

You live & learn I guess.

Crikey, that will piss off David Beckham 😂

My first thought too!

Sillyname63 · 09/05/2025 19:53

Never mind David Beckham, Trump will be positively catatonic or Say that Tom Cruise is famous because of him😂😂
