Sir Tom Cruise 🙄

Tom Cruise is getting a Knighthood for services to the film industry!

I don’t think I’ve seen him in anything for 20/30 years!

Why are we rewarding a man who earns millions just for pretending to be someone else and speaking the words that someone else has written and who is instructed where to stand, sit, walk and move around?

A man who has not seen his daughter since she was 7 years old nearly 12 years ago!

To the OP. You must be living in a real bubble if you haven’t seen anything he has been in or any chat shows he has been on

BitOutOfPractice · 08/05/2025 22:24

You could say that about a lot of show biz people who are less popular than him.

Id rather actors got it than faceless industrialists or civil servants.

BethDuttonYeHaw · 08/05/2025 22:26

It’s just Daily Mail clickbait.

EasternStandard · 08/05/2025 18:36

I didn’t know it was possible either

Nor me. Seems ridiculous to be knighting people from other countries.

SelinaPlace · 08/05/2025 22:34

I’m with Benjamin Zephaniah on the ‘honours’ system, but far stranger people have been honoured for far more cynical reasons, and yes, as a pp said, I imagine it’s a tacit attempt to encourage the increasingly common practice of making US films in the UK, especially with Trump’s threatened tariff on ‘foreign’ films.

Dangermoo · 08/05/2025 22:45

More fool you two to even begin to think Beckham would be in the run up for a knighthood. Amazing how you pick and choose when you believe from the Daily Mail. I'm sure I will be told you were being ironic.

Poonu · 08/05/2025 22:49

Angelina Jolie got one. She was very close to William Hague

ItGhoul · 08/05/2025 23:00

He might get some kind of honour - but he can’t and won’t be knighted.

He’s also been appearing in films in leading roles for the entire time you apparently haven’t seen him anything.

I don’t like him at all but a) he hasn’t got a knighthood and b) his relationship with his kids isn’t relevant. People are honoured for services to an industry or charity, not for being nice. I suspect he’s financed/produced/starred in a lot of films that have made UK studios like Pinewood etc. Loads of films people refer to as ‘Hollywood’ movies are actually made in England; we have really successful studios and talented crews here.

We aren’t doing that.

He can get knighted but because he’s not a member of the Commonwealth he can’t call himself Sir, as far as I understand.

Can’t get too excited about it as it’s a daft antiquated system used and abused by the croneyism of politicians in the main. I remember asking my mum what OBE meant once and she said: “Other bugger’s efforts” so that rather set my course for life in terms of the so-called honours system…

i Don’t quite agree with this.

My DDad received the OBE a number of years ago. Sadly he’s now got dementia. He had a huge job in public service and worked like a Trojan, up at 5am writing his reports for the day, doing his day job -and attending public meetings in the evenings regularly; most working days were like that for him. It took its toll. The stress for him was immense.

The awards that get the attention in the press are for those who are famous. But there’s a significant number of people who are given awards for genuine hard work , effort and change for the better. I remember his awards ceremony for rewarding the mostly unsung heroes.

’Other Buggers efforts’ was said to me quite a few times when I mentioned my DDad had just received an OBE …

Terry Wogan got a knighthood and used the title. Is Bob geldof a Sir as well

Terry Rogan became a British citizen before he was knighted. So he was entitled to be called Sir.

Dangermoo · 08/05/2025 22:03

Why would an American get a knighthood? Also, is the far fetched drama about Becks expecting a knighthood still going?

They wouldn't. Hth

Dangermoo · 08/05/2025 23:13

ArminTamzerian · 08/05/2025 23:09

You asked a question, you didn't make a statement. So no, TDH.

Make that a rhetorical question then. Really DO HTH.

ArminTamzerian · 08/05/2025 23:18

Given that this is text and that it's impossible to tell any difference between a rhetorical question and an actual question, nothing you have said H whatsoever. But do continue being arsey about it, if it amuses you.

Then I suggest you educate yourself on the literacy device of rhetorical questions. It appears you don't understand its application.

The OP is doing feminism no favours.

babymamalove · 08/05/2025 23:42

Please someone leak Beckhams emails again if this happens 🤣 oh to be a fly on that wall hahaha

IrritatedEarthling · 08/05/2025 23:46

I should be made a dame for my services to motherhood...

Just another way to make me feel like a "have not". Oh well.

StarTwirl · 08/05/2025 23:49

WTF he’s bloody American

I fucking hope that doesn’t happen

it’s insulting

Serpentstooth · 08/05/2025 23:53

OK, can someone dangle a knighthood in front of Bigly for 'services to film' and maybe he'll take his daft tariff off film industry. Arise Sir Bigly of Trump.
