Sir Tom Cruise 🙄

Tom Cruise is getting a Knighthood for services to the film industry!

I don’t think I’ve seen him in anything for 20/30 years!

Why are we rewarding a man who earns millions just for pretending to be someone else and speaking the words that someone else has written and who is instructed where to stand, sit, walk and move around?

A man who has not seen his daughter since she was 7 years old nearly 12 years ago!

Same way Bob Geldof and Terry Wogan got theirs

Terry got UK citizenship in 2005 so his is not honorary (hence Sir Terry).

Cruise is mr box office, oozes charisma, and has been a huge asset to the film industry. And he does a lot of film work in the UK. So an honorary award (if this report is true) is merited. It will be the same as Spielberg. Surprised George Lucas hasn't had one yet as both his franchises (Star Wars and Indiana Jones) were filmed in UK studios.

Vitrolinsanity · 08/05/2025 19:08

He’s a massive force in making films in the UK. You may not have seen or appreciated his films, but he’s box office gold and I, among obviously many millions of others like them. Personally, I think he should have got it just for the sock dance in Risky Business.

As to his track record as husband and father, that’s not what he’s being recognised for. The list above has some pretty dicey characters for sure.

NewsdeskJC · 08/05/2025 19:10

I wholeheartedly agree with the wise words in the Proclaimers song In Recognition.
Have a listen, it says it all

LlynTegid · 08/05/2025 19:11

He has done a lot for the UK film industry and brought pleasure to millions. Unlike Sir Gavin Williamson, Sir Grant Shapps or Sir Philip Green, to name three.

I didn’t know it was possible either

I think they can be awarded an honorary knighthood, but they can’t be called ‘sir’

How can he get a knighthood if he’s American?

The title can be a honorary one. https://www.royal.uk/knighthoods-and-damehoods#:~:text=Foreign%20citizens%20occasionally%20receive%20honorary,Sir'%20or%20'Dame'.
"Foreign citizens occasionally receive honorary knighthoods or damehoods through UK orders; they are not dubbed, and they do not use the style 'Sir' or 'Dame'. Such knighthoods are conferred by The King, on the advice of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, on those who have made an important contribution to relations between their country and Britain."

Presumably you have the same issues surrounding e.g. Dame Judi Dench, Dame Maggie Smith, Sir Sean Connery, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Sir Mark Rylance etc etc.

Do you think no actor should ever receive an honour?

Oh I love that and it’s so true!!!

gonna use that and think of your mumn

@blubbyblub
He's hardly Savile, that's really unfair to compare him to an evil paedophile. I like Cruise as an actor and have enjoyed some of his films of which there has been many.

So pleased you mentioned this, had forgotten about this song, nails it doesn’t it?

Also while-heartedly behind the late BZ’s opinion on the matter: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2003/nov/27/poetry.monarchy

Benjamin Zephaniah: 'I thought, OBE me? Up yours, I thought'

An invitation to the palace to accept a New Year honour... you must be joking. Benjamin Zephaniah won't be going. Here he explains why.

What's your source OP? After a quick Google all there is is a Daily Mail article that's reporting rumours...

Think you quoted one person and then ‘@‘ another…

ifyoudont · 08/05/2025 19:17

We’d all be film stars if it was as simple as just speaking words someone else has written and being instructed where to stand, sit, walk and move to.

minnienono · 08/05/2025 19:19

He spends a lot of time here as many of his films are shot here plus apparently he likes that in rural Britain (he either owns or rents a house somewhere here) he’s basically ignored

IWasTheLemonHelper · 08/05/2025 19:19

I don’t care what Tom Cruise has been awarded, I’m sure there’s a political reason for it - but I think its time David Beckham and Torvill&Dean got theirs.

If you want to start the list of who it SHOULD be, surely you should lead with Monty Don.

ThePussy · 08/05/2025 19:23

He will get an honorary knighthood. So he can’t call himself Sir Tom. He’ll be Tom Cruise KBE.

Terry Wogan became British as soon as he possibly could as he wanted to be Sir Terry.

maggiecate · 08/05/2025 19:23

I’m not a fan especially (I think he’s hugely underutilised his skills as actor in favour of making action movies) but his movies have made a huge financial contribution to the UK film industry. As well as being an actor he’s also a producer, and he’s chosen to make a lot of his films at Pinewood and other locations in the UK. He’s one of the very few stars left whose name pretty much guarantees bums in seats in the cinema. Having him make films here is a real vote of confidence in the talent of our technical and production staff. He received the BFI fellowship recently in recognition of his support over 40 years. A lot of people here have his films to thank for making a successful career in the industry.

BFI to honour Tom Cruise with Fellowship award

The British Film Institute (BFI) is to celebrate actor and producer Tom Cruise with its highest honour, a BFI Fellowship.

I sincerely hope you are not accusing Tom Cruise of committing offenses as serious as Jimmy Saville was... if so you need to talk to the police.

Or a Doctor.

JaneJeffer · 08/05/2025 19:24

Yay! Well done Sir Tom

oh Can he only be sir if he’s British ?

Richiewoo · 08/05/2025 19:27

He's can't be a sir. He's not British.

Lou670 · 08/05/2025 19:27

Not just an actor that learns lines and 'pretends to be someone else'. He does all this own stunts unlike many actors that use a stunt double. He has broken bones, had multiple stitches and risked his life in many of his films. I don't think what he does or doesn't do in his personal life should come in to it as that not want he is being recognized for.

Leaffilledlattice · 08/05/2025 19:27

SnoozingFox · 08/05/2025 18:41

He can't.

According to Google he can, but it will just be an honorary knighthood and he can’t call himself Sir.

Badlifeday · 08/05/2025 19:27

He's already at Operating Thetan Level 8, so a knighthood is a bit of an anti-climax.
