We left school and did our CSEs in 1984 - note no O Levels/A Levels or 6th Form - dear Mumsnetters

We came of age in 1986 - Hand of God - Mexico World Cup etc etc

Harold Wilson was PM when we were born

only CFs would call us ‘nearly’ ‘60’

Well I hate to say it but you are 😆 I’m not far behind you though

BlondeMummyto1 · 25/04/2025 18:30

They aren’t wrong. You left school 40 years ago.

Smallmercies · 25/04/2025 18:31

We are nearly 60! And proud of it! 😅

Deebee90 · 25/04/2025 18:31

I mean it’s not rude as you are nearly 60. 57/58 is closer to 60 than 50 .

BIWI · 25/04/2025 18:31

More tonic in your gin, perhaps?

HowardTJMoon · 25/04/2025 18:31

You're late 50s. Which is nearly 60.

Doesn’t feel like 40 years

I was born 1968 too. I guess it’s true we’re closer to 60 than 50. But who cares really. It’s better than the alternative !

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 25/04/2025 18:31

Yep I'd class that as nearly 60 and again not far behind.

Just querying the no gce or sixth form bit, my brother is older and did both, I'm only a year behind and also did both.

Poonu · 25/04/2025 18:31

Nearer to 60 than 50
Why does it matter?

EvidentClyburn · 25/04/2025 18:31

BIWI · 25/04/2025 18:31

Ok!!

My husband left school in 1984. He is already going on about his 60th birthday party (in 2 and half years) so he clearly feels he is nearly 60!

TheNightingalesStarling · 25/04/2025 18:31

Would late 50s be more acceptable?

Its not an insult to be a certain age. You are being more rude to older people right now.

Pottingup · 25/04/2025 18:32

Am pretty much there. It’s fine - Kylie Minogue was born in 1968 and she can’t possibly be classed as old.

Needmorelego · 25/04/2025 18:32

Closer to 60 than 50 I'm afraid 😁
My husband turned 60 this year. He is taking full advantage of any deals. He now has a 60+ London Oyster card, Senior Railcard and a Senior Coach Card.
Unfortunately he can't do the Iceland discount for over 60s on Tuesday mornings because he's at work 😂

i went to to a school where vast majority did CSEs - doing O levels was practically unknown!

What’s wrong with being ‘nearly 60’ though?

It’s like when you tell people your age and they do that mock compliment “you don’t look [age]!”. It’s ok to be [age], you don’t have to pretend I’m younger!

TempleBar9631 · 25/04/2025 18:33

57 is nearly 60 in general terms. Though if you're talking about a specific person then "nearly 60" would indicate that milestone birthday is just around the corner.

It's all relative, is it not?

I think you got your words mixed up, more than less tonic!!

We didn’t realise Iceland discount was a thing !

I’m older than you, and I did ‘O’-levels and ‘A’-levels in the 6th form.

steff13 · 25/04/2025 18:34

I was born well after 1968, but I will support you in your delusion. You're nowhere near 60!

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 25/04/2025 18:34

Another 68er here. Still can’t believe Duran Duran et al are 40+ years ago.🤣 Better be frighteningly near 60 than not get there though, all to be celebrated.

I got married in '68, it's really no big deal, the truth is you're near to 60 that 50!

I went to a school that did both O levels and CSEs. Along with a good selection of O levels I got a grade 3 CSE in metalwork which, given I did the practical with a broken wrist, I was inordinately proud of.
