We left school and did our CSEs in 1984 - note no O Levels/A Levels or 6th Form - dear Mumsnetters

We came of age in 1986 - Hand of God - Mexico World Cup etc etc

Harold Wilson was PM when we were born

only CFs would call us ‘nearly’ ‘60’

Different timeline but just saying I know what you’re saying… And it’s not ageism or anything. Just being caught off guard.

Coconutter24 · 25/04/2025 18:48

It’s not rude to say you’re nearly 60…. You are🤷‍♀️

I'm a Jan 68er and yes, we are approaching 60!! It is rather alarming, but true. Glad to be here.

We were born ar the BEST EVER time in music 💪

I’m later in 68 so am still 56 which I like to think of as “a bit the wrong side of 50” but nothing worse than mid-50s!

I think it depends how old the people around you as to whether you feel that an age is old or not. I hadn’t expected to be one of a very few people at work born in the 60s at this stage. I feel fairly ancient there.

Sonolanona · 25/04/2025 18:50

Well I was born in 1968 and I did O Levels... no CSEs at my (Grammar) School! I'm 57 and 3 months... that definitely makes me nearer 60 than 50 😁
Doesn't bother me in the slightest!

Nannyfannybanny · 25/04/2025 18:50

My DD was born in 1970,, and she is 54, so how is someone born just 2 years before, almost 60.

EvidentClyburn · 25/04/2025 18:51

SantaToSSD · 25/04/2025 18:37

As someone who is actually 60, I would like to know why is it rude to describe someone as nearly 60? Inaccurate, maybe (though not in your case since you are nearer 60 than 50) but rude? Charming!

Nooo!! It’s just that I view the gif looking lads in my years as still lean, fresh faced, fit and handsome - thats all ! Nothing wrong with 60 per se but in my mind they’re still young lads!

MumoftwoGranofone · 25/04/2025 18:52

The way I look at it .. Eg forties. At 40, you’re 40. Then ages 41, 42, 43 years you’re early 40s; 44, 45, 46 years you’re mid 40s; 47, 48, 49 years you’re late 40s. My parents always round up their ages and it makes them sound much older than they are!

MasterBeth · 25/04/2025 18:52

OfNoOne · 25/04/2025 18:36

It's factual. 57 or 58 rounds up to 60. If you're 57 or 58, you're nearly 60.

That's ok, by the way. Being 60 or nearly 60 is fine.

If you're born in 1968, you're not 58!!!

I was born in 1968. I am 56. Not late 50s!! Mid-50s!!! Round down.

(And I did O Levels!!!)

Went to a comp in the middle of 3 rough council estates … O Levels? 😭

Sadly, it’s true….56/57 is closer to 60 than 50!

No idea what you mean about no O’levels/A-levels or 6th form…..you are talking about being born in 1968 and taking exams in 1984 aren’t you (not 1868 and 1884)? At my school, the less academically able took CSE’s and did vocational courses. But O/A levels definitely existed.

I have O and A levels and went to 6th form….what type of education did you have?!!

Edited

If that poster went to a secondary modern it's quite possible that O-Levels and A-levels didn't happen at her school.
My Mum and Dad both went to secondary moderns and left at 15 and took no exams.
The leaving age changed to 16 in 72 but some schools were still secondary moderns into the 80s (some are technically still now) and it could be some of those schools just didn't offer O and A levels.

BunnyLake · 25/04/2025 18:54

BIWI · 25/04/2025 18:33

I’m older than you, and I did ‘O’-levels and ‘A’-levels in the 6th form.

I’m an O Leveler too. Left school straight after though, so was working full time at 16. Sometimes it feels like ten lifetimes ago, sometimes it feels like last week.

drspouse · 25/04/2025 18:55

I'm very proud of being a child of the 60s and Gen X.
But I prefer not to think about being nearly 60.

Ok I went to school in a deprived area - deprived council estates where our parents wouldn’t have had a day’s education - my Dad was a manual worker who could barely read or write

I'm 10 years behind you I was thinking the same the other day while doing the washing up. But we lost a cousin when he was only 13. So I'm greatful I've got to live my life and have a family of my own.

They’ll be 56 if no birthday yet. 57 would be mid 50s to me. Late 50s at 58.

Sounds like where my Mum is from. Only the kids that got into grammar school got to
do O levels!

fridascruffs · 25/04/2025 19:00

1965 here. A few more months of being 59. Can't wait for a third off railfares and my bus pass!

Sixtygpingonthirty · 25/04/2025 19:01

you’re late 50’s 😊

How old were your parents that they didn’t have a day’s education? My (very working class) grandparents were born in 1911 and 1912 and attended school.

Eustaciavile · 25/04/2025 19:02

You know you’re in denial 😆😆
It’s the shock when you realise you’re pushing 60, despite being 20 in your head.
love from me, aged 58 and a 1/4

Ph3 · 25/04/2025 19:02

@EvidentClyburn how is it rude? If you were born in 1968 you’re 57 years old. Thats nearly 60 and That’s not rude it’s maths.

Well they did have education technically - born late 20s/early 30s - but very large working class Irish Catholic families left school very young etc - so my comments about a days education were a bit of a figure of speech thing not technically accurate

You’re wrong about O and A-Levels OP. I’m the same age as you, and I took my O-Levels in 1984 and my A-Levels in 1986.

w0nderwall · 25/04/2025 19:04

Mid-50s, surely? Nearly 60 starts when you are two months out.
